Unhappy Anybody have some insight on fever in toddlers (was 104.9 earlier today, now is 96.3)

We are planning on taking him to the dr. first thing in the morning, and monitoring him closely so if anything drastic happens we can take him right in to a quick care tonight.
His fever started yesterday, we didn't know why (he was sick last week). It came down & today he seemed ok, even ate lunch. THen after his nap it was 104.8! EEK!! We couldnt' get it below 102, I went out & got Motrin, he took that & had a long bath, then we put him to bed (didn't get his hair wet). We've been checking his tepm every 30-45 minutes, because it was still 102.5 when we put him to bed, but he had JUST taken the motrin. Its going down, down, down, but now its at 96.3. We put his fleece blankie back on him the last itme we checked him (he was at 97.3 then). SO, should I be worried?? We wrapped him up real nice in his blankie, but I don't know why its keeps going down, and I don't want it to go shooting up when the motrin wears off because he's wrapped up. I can't seem to find any info on line about temps. below normal, except about hypothermia (which say below 97 is bad, btw, which freaks me out!).

Why does it keep going down?? Did he have too much Motrin maybe, would that do it? WHen should I worry? WHat should I do??

I'm so worried! I'm probably being over-paranoid because my little brother (who is 6 months older than my son) just got out of the hospital for something that started out as just a cold, but I'm a worrier anyway, I can't help it.

Thanks for any thoughts or ideas!

oh, he's 3, btw, if that helps any!

OK, some more info: its down to 96, and he is WET with sweat! we just changed his clothes & sheets & blanket, because they were so wet, his hair is wet, he's just soaked with sweat, but his temp is 96. Its been 3.5 hours since he got the motrin, and since we are alternating tylenol & motrin every 3 hours, we gave him tylenol (the suppository, yay). I don't knwo what to think here.

Anyway, I've got to get some sleep, so send some ~~~get well vibes~~~ if you can spare them, and I'll let you know how the doctor's appointment goes tomorrow.

    Thanks a ton!

I know there is some sort of cut offs on when temps become dangerous and I would think 104.8 is past it. I know if my child had a fever that high I would have taken them right to the ER or atleast called them. You have to be careful when it comes to fevers. Hope he is better soon.

Well, I did call his dr.'s office (they were closed but the service puts me through to a dr), and they told me to start the alternating of tylenol & motrin & the baths, and if it didn't go down at all to bring him to a quick care. But if it did go down to bring him to the office in the morning. So, it did go down, but then I was freaking because it kept goig down. It was weird.

ANyway, I took him in this morning, and he has ear infections in both ears. So he got an antibiotic. I figured that's what it was.

I was just really freaking out last night.

If I were you I'd take him to the er! My son had 104.8 last year and we took him asap and they kept him for a couple hours. They said that the fever dropping that low is shock to the body. If you don't want to take him- at least call the er and they can tell you if you should bring him in!!!

My son had a temp that high before also one afternoon. Doc said tylenol and baths. His temp went down steady and he was fine as far as temp. by the evening. Doc also said that toddlers can have a temp. like that sometimes. It was scary for me because my mom said i had scarlet fever when I was about 18 mos. and had a temp of 106, had to stay in the hospital for a month in quarintine(spelling?). She said i did not even look human and peeled like a snake afterwards. So I am very afraid of children getting temps.
