My aunt did it, and I want to say she used wire coat hangers.. but I'll ask her and get back to you. Her tree is beautiful!

Ok, she just told me it was actually a tomato cage.. So, I don't know where you could find those for free, but you might be able to find them cheaper since the season's almost over. good luck!

I have 2 wire trees and both totally different. The first one is made of very thin (floral)wire and the stump is about 75-100 strands all wound with white floral tape. As the tree tapers out the branches thin and it holds easter ornaments.
The other tree is made with a 20 strand chunk of telephone wire (the thick silver wound stuff ,about an 18" cut off). It is made to look like the monterrey pines near the ocean and the ends of the branches hold sand dollars. Looks just like a monterrey pine tree and is mounted in a piece of varnished drift wood.

When I worked in Headstart we got free telephone lines from phone company. strip them and you get wire.
