Anyone know anything about clipping puppy tails??
Ok.The reason I'm asking is I'm taking care of my neighbor's 6 puppies and they are 10 days old today.
(here is my post in vent/whine to explain why I have these pups http://forums.bigbigsavings.com/show...hreadid=131010)
Well,I called some vets and they all said it should have been done when they were 3-5 days old. Some said they could do them now,but would have to sedate them a little, some said they wouldn't even do them now that we would have to wait till they are 12 weeks old.We didn't know they should have been done earlier and it will cost a lot of $$$ if she waits till they get bigger. One of the other neighbor's said he had done his dog and knew how to do it,so I guess what I'm wanting to know is could it be done to them NOW WITHOUT having to sedate them, safely???Cause we were gonna see if he would clip their tails so it wouldn't cost so much $$$.If anyone knows anything about this please let me know.Thanks.

when we raised english springer spaniels we would have the tails clipped at 3-5 days, no older than a week. earlier is better since the bones are soft. i would not let anyone other than a vet do it.

I know a little about this since my mom raised Dobermans while I was growing up and I have some experience with Rotts and Cockers. It is true that they should be done between 3-5 days old since they have not grown yet it is much less painfull and they heal faster. When they get bigger it hurts them alot more and they usually bleed more also. Some vets will put stitches in.So really it is up to you if you can stand crying pups for awhile.I personally would not do it now,but I know many people who have.I hope this helps a little.

well, the dogs we had showed didnt need their tails clipped, but we have many friends with breeds that do need them clipped. you can take them to the vet and have it done. ususly 3-5 days is hte norm. they can do it, im sure the pups would be fine if they had to be put under for a little while. now, do they plan on showing these dogs, or are they just for pets? that, to me is the only difference. in order to show most breeds with that type of tail, they need to be clipped. if they are going to be strictly for family pourpose, then i wouldnt worry. its the same for the ears.
good luck!! ill read your vent and whine in a min, im sure i should have read it first, but oh well.

Well, the reason she didn't want to take them to the vet and get it done is it's gonna cost quite a bit and she is already spending big bucks on the milk for them. That's why I was wondering if it would be safe to just let our neighbor do it.
These are not for show, but they are part rottweiler(and they LOOK like rotties)and they would just look funny with tails.
I think she is gonna keep one so she may just let whoever gets them get their own clipped if they want and just take the one she keeps to the vet to get clipped. We were just trying to find out if it would be safe to let our neighbor do it now since they are already 10 days old.

well, i hope its NOT the same one who shot your dog!!!
i dont know about letting your neighbor do it. what whould he do? put a rubber band around the tail? i would be a little leery about it. ask him how he is gonna do it, then id call the vet and see if it safe.
good luck sweetie, you have had your handsfull for a while. things will only get better.

It can be done,,but it's cruel the way it would have to be done by an ordinary person,,and not a vet..I have done this before,,it must be done with the astronomical signs...Yes I work on a farm,,and the signs really work....

NO it isn't the same one that shot the dogs(I'd like to clip a few things off of him though.LOL).He is kin to him though. Most of my neighbor's are from the same family and the guy we were gonna ask is related to him,but he is a very nice man.
I don't think he would use the rubber band.I guess he would use something to just cut them off.I know a LOT of people that raise dogs and cut them theirselves, but what has got me worried is that they are already 10 days old and I NOW(a little too late.LOL)know that they should have been done sooner.
Thanks everyone for the comments.I guess she may just need to let everyone that gets a pup get them clipped theirselves if they want to.
