Immigrant influx strains EBR teaching staff
Posted: Sep 15, 2014 5:22 PM by Jason Newton

BATON ROUGE - An influx of immigrant children is putting a strain on resources for the East Baton Rouge Parish School District. More than a thousand unaccompanied alien children are now in schools across the state.

East Baton Rouge Parish has 173 students from Central America recently enrolled that may be unaccompanied minors who have flooded over the southern border this summer. Part of more than a thousand who landed in Louisiana. "The majority come from Honduras," said Keith Bromery, spokesman for East Baton Rouge School Board. "The remainder come from El Salvador and Guatelmala."

The students are scattered throughout the system at 16 elementary schools, seven middle and seven high schools. Now the school system is struggling to accommodate the special needs of students who don't speak English. East Baton Rouge is maxed-out when it comes to English-Second-Language professionals. "We are currently looking for more teachers with the ESL endorsement," Bromery said. "Or bilingual who can support us in this regard."

Federal law requires the kids to stay in the U.S. until their deportation hearings. The head of a state teacher union says that's fine, but the feds should kick in some cash to help the local districts. "Who's responsible for picking up the tab?" asked Steve Monaghan, head of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers. "In (this) case, the federal government. And that's what the expectations should be."

With a mission of educating all children regardless of the circumstances, EBR said they're goals remain unchanged. "That's our responsibility, to teach students, regardless of where they come from," said Bromery.

Five parishes in the state have these students enrolled. Only Jefferson and Orleans have more than East Baton Rouge.

How can these children be enrolled in school without birth certificates, Social Security numbers, and immunization records? That was required of my children, has this changed?

    ...

In some districts, parents have to present a water bill or some other proof that they live in the district for their child to attend a certain school. Where's the burden of proof here? Why would the school system enable people to basically abandon their children?

    ..

Really? While did I serve 22 1/2 years in the military keeping our country safe for the currently administration just to open our borders up? God Bless our children.

the federal government would we us as to who should pay BUT since this government is so lax, it should come out of the salary of those who have not done their job of securing our border and if they had secured it, these thousands of unaccompanied children would not be here draining the resources that should be for the american children and those who are here legally .

Top US Doctor: Illegal Immigrant Children May Be Spreading Mysterious Respiratory Disease
Oct 03, 2014 by Katie McGuire

As if it wasn’t scary enough to be a parent, new info is out that could mean the ILLEGAL CHILDREN PLACE IN ALL 50 STATES COULD BE SPREADING SERIOUS ILLNESSES TO OUR KIDS! These types of illnesses have been prevalent in these countries

Dr. Jane Orient, the executive director of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, told Laura Ingraham that illegal immigrant children could be spreading dangerous viruses in the US. Dr. Orient says the illegal children may not have been screened or quarantined thoroughly.

    Breitbart reported:

Dr. Jane Orient, Executive Director of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, reported that the government has been “real tight-lipped” about the mysterious respiratory illness that has struck children in the United States, expressed concern that the illegal immigrant minors from Central America could be the source, and argued that the government should devote more resources to border security to combat the spread of disease on Wednesday’s “Laura Ingraham Show.”

When asked whether illegal immigrant children who have been sent to various locations around the country could be the cause of the virus, she responded “Yes, they could be. We don’t know for sure the government is being real tight-lipped about this, and it only takes one infected child to infect the whole classroom.”

Orient added “we don’t know where it’s coming from…are there immigrants from Central America, where this disease has allegedly been prevalent before? Should we be [looking at] the virus to see whether it’s like what’s been found in some of these countries that are just sending waves of children across our border and they haven’t been quarantined long enough to make sure they’re not sick?”

Monica Showalter at Investor’s Business Daily has more on the mysterious chikungunya virus that is spreading in Central America and has worked its way up into the United States.

The Caribbean is on high alert for the spread of chikungunya, known as “the virus of pain.” Its Tanzanian-origin Bantu name means “to contort,” describing the agony it leaves in joints for years.

Some 183,000 cases were detected in the region this year as it spreads from the same mosquitoes that transmit dengue and yellow fever. Central America, according to a report in El Pais, is the epicenter. Puerto Rico has reported 2,000 cases and three deaths.

But the disease has worked its way up to the U.S.; Texas and Florida reported victims who have already contracted it without traveling to the affected regions.

The CDC and state health departments have confirmed 594 with respiratory illnesses in the U.S. caused by EV-D68.
Here's what you should know about the virus

    posted: Oct 06, 2014 3:03 PM CDT
    By Syrenthia Harris

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, a total of 594 people in 43 states and Washington, DC have confirmed with respiratory illness caused by enterovirus-68. Health departments across the U.S. have reported increases and almost all cases confirmed have been in children. The virus is said to cause mild to severe respiratory illness and spreads through contaminated surfaces coughs, and sneezes.

A child in New Jersey died after testing positive for EV-68. Fourteen children California have tested positive, and in St. Louis two children treated for paralysis were linked to EV-68.

Officials are urging people to seek medical help immediately if a child starts to lose feeling in their limbs. EV-68 is one of more than 100 non-polio enteroviruses. The CDC has released information on symptoms, protection and treatment.

    Symptoms
•Mild symptoms may include sneezing, runny nose, fever and body and muscles aches.
•Severe symptoms include difficulty breathing and wheezing.

    Prevention
•Frequently wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds.
•Avoid kissing, hugging and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick.
•Clean and disinfect frequently especially if someone is sick.
•Cover coughs and sneezes with tissue, not hands.
•Stay home when you are sick.

    Treatment
•Over-the-counter medication for pain and fever can be used for mild respiratory illness.
•Some people may need to be hospitalized if severe respiratory illness is present.
•There is no specific treatment for people with respiratory illness caused by EV-68.

Children, infants and teenagers are most likely to become infected with the virus, which can only be diagnosed by lab tests.

There are no vaccines to prevent EV-68.

'Mystery Illness' Striking Kids Across the Country
by Warner Todd Huston 3 Oct 2014

While most folks have had their eyes diverted by the Ebola scare, another illness is hitting hundreds of kids especially hard this year. Some have become paralyzed by the illness, and others have died.

Calling it the "mystery illness," doctors say it is a strain of viruses called Enterovirus 68, and it has hit kids from California to the East Coast. First diagnosed in the U.S. in 1962, the virus has been rare here. But this year it has exploded for unknown reasons.

As Breitbart News reported, since mid-September, more and more cases of this mysterious respiratory illness have broken out, but as one expert has noted, government officials have been "real tight-lipped" about the outbreaks.

Dr. Jane Orient, executive director of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, recently said that we might want to look to the recent influx of tens of thousands of illegal immigrants for a root cause.

On September 17, Dr. Orient said:

We don't know where it's coming from. ...Are there immigrants from Central America, where this disease has allegedly been prevalent before? Should we be [looking at] the virus to see whether it's like what's been found in some of these countries that are just sending waves of children across our border and they haven't been quarantined long enough to make sure they're not sick?
Whatever the cause, in the last weeks, cases of the illness have mounted, as more than 40 states have reported hundreds of cases, usually in children between 10 and 15 years of age.

Several children in Colorado have suffered paralysis due to the viral infection, with as many as nine struck with polio-like symptoms in Aurora, Colorado.

There have also been deaths. One child in Rhode Island died from complications from the virus. Ten-year-old Emily Ortrando reportedly died of a staph infection due to an Enterovirus 68 infection. Also, late in September, a four-year-old child in New Jersey perished from the virus.

question we should all ask why is the government so tight lipped? what have they to hide? IMHO usually when there is a run around it is because no one wants to tell the truth. why does the government refuse to even acknowledge where they have sent all the illegal children? Why has the border patrol say that these children have not had medical checkups before they were released all over the US? If all these illnesses have been at the border carried by illegals into our country, could that be why the president refused to go and visit the border? I can't help but recall when hurricane sandy hit the east coast, O had no problem going to NJ and getting a lot of publicity and photo ops with governor christy right before election time in 2012......but there were no contagious diseases there from what i have read. makes a person wonder

Toddler first in Michigan to die from enterovirus strain
    Reuters - 20 hrs ago

NEW YORK, Oct 11 - A 21-month-old girl is the first in the state of Michigan and second in the U.S. to die this year from a strain of the enterovirus that has infected more than 500 people across the nation, health officials said on Saturday.

Madeline Reid, who was stricken with Enterovirus D68(EV-D68), passed away late on Friday while being treated at the Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit, hospital officials said in a statement. "It is never easy to lose a child, and our entire healthcare team at the Children's Hospital of Michigan is deeply saddened by this family's loss and mourns with them during this very difficult time," Rudolph Valentini, chief medical officer at the children's hospital, said.

Reid is the first in the state reported to have died from the virus, Michigan Department of Community Health spokeswoman Jennifer Smith said.

More than 500 people, mostly children, in 43 states and the District of Columbia have been infected with EV-D68 since mid-August, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

This week, the CDC said that a 4-year-old Eli Waller of New Jersey, who went to bed last month in seemingly good health and died in his sleep, was the first fatality linked directly to the strain of the virus.

Aside from Reid and Waller, at least four others infected with Enterovirus D68 have died this year, although the CDC saidit is unclear what role the virus played in their deaths.

EV-D68 is one of more than 100 non-polio enteroviruses, which are common at this time of year and cause 10 million to 15 million infections in the United States annually. Few people who contract Enterovirus D68 develop symptoms beyond a runny nose and low fever.

Cases of the Amnesty Virus doubles in just a week

California has reported 32 cases of the respiratory illness enterovirus D-68, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) said on Friday.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the number of patients with the illness has more than doubled in just one week; on October 3rd, the CDPH reported just 14 cases of the illness statewide. http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/l...010-story.html

All of the patients being treated for EV-D68 in California are reportedly between the ages of one week and 15 years old.

“There have been concerns about EV-D68 because of the large outbreaks it sparked in other parts of the country,” CDPH epidemiologist Dr. Gil Chavez told the Times.

On August 19th, Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City alerted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that it was seeing an increase in patients with severe respiratory illness, including some who were taken into pediatric intensive care. Four days later, a Chicago hospital also alerted the CDC to increased cases of patients with severe respiratory illness. A CDC investigation found EV-D68 in 19 of 22 patients at the Kansas City hospital, and 11 of 14 patients at the Chicago hospital.

Since then, from mid-August to October 10 of this year, 691 cases of enterovirus D-68 have been reported in 46 states, according to the CDC. The CDC notes that almost all reported cases of EV-D68 have affected children, many of whom had asthma or a pre-existing respiratory condition.

The real culprit in measles outbreak
Elizabeth Lee Vliet, M.D., predicted disease as result of 2014 illegals' flood

    Published: 1 day ago

The focus of the Obama administration and media in the measles outbreak in the U.S. has been on American parents not vaccinating their children.

This overlooks a key issue other physicians and I warned about in May and June 2014: Illegal immigrants coming across the U.S. southern borders in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and California were bringing with them many invisible travelers. These unwanted guests include viruses, bacteria and fungal diseases the U.S. had eradicated or controlled decades ago. Measles was one of the diseases mentioned then, since it is widespread in parts of the world from which the illegal immigration surge is coming – in particular, Central America.

Fast forward to 2015, and suddenly we have the widespread outbreak of measles that was predicted. But the blame is being placed on “bad parents” who don’t want to vaccinate their children for fear of side effects of the vaccines.

Because the U.S. declared that it had eradicated measles in 2000, parents were right to wonder why they should take an unnecessary risk. They are not the cause of this current outbreak. Being unvaccinated does not give you measles. Lawlessness on our borders is the culprit that re-introduced the measles virus to our territory. The same government that broke our immigration laws is now blaming U.S. parents for the predictable consequences of its policy. The U.S. government both facilitated and encouraged the flood of illegal border crossers and assisted their rapid dispersal to cities across the U.S.

Now the government that fails to follow its own laws is saying it will mandate that all parents vaccinate their children to protect against the disease it allowed to enter the U.S.

Clearly, there are risks to the public’s health with this measles outbreak. Most children recover quickly, but some patients, particularly adults, may have serious consequences: encephalitis, deafness and even death. Additionally, such disease outbreaks are very costly: the expense of tracking contacts in an attempt to contain spread, as well as increased medical costs. Taxpayer-subsidized medical care for illegals is estimated to account for 20 to 40 percent of uncompensated (“free”) medical services. Then there are the economic burdens of lost productivity while ill or caring for sick family members.

    To vaccinate or not?

Passions run high on both sides of the issue. Some parents object on moral grounds. Some parents fear the risk of autism. Even though we have no proof of a causal link between vaccines and autism, it is hard to ignore the anguish families have experienced when a normal, healthy, vibrant child suddenly becomes withdrawn and loses language skills soon after a mandatory vaccine. We simply may never know a “definitive” answer on this issue. Should the government force parents to take a risk they find unacceptable?

There are valid reasons to vaccinate children, and adults. There are valid reasons not to do so. Both sides of the decision are medical ones, best made between physician and patient, based on the circumstances of each individual patient.

Then there is another overlooked issue. The U.S. has only one company now making the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, with components, such as material from aborted fetuses, that make it morally objectionable to some parents. A similar vaccine, without the objectionable components, is available in Japan, but the FDA does not allow it to be imported into the U.S. In Chile, where I am currently working with a new medical services program, there are several different manufacturers for these vaccines, allowing more choice in type of vaccine used and better options for risk management related to possible side effects.

We must stop blaming parents and face the fact that this measles outbreak has many causes, starting with our own government’s failed policies.

We need to get back on track:

Follow our immigration laws and proper medical screening for people who wish to come to the U.S. legally.

Allow medical decisions to remain between physicians and patients, and not be dictated in the political arena.

Allow free-market principles to operate with development of multiple sources of vaccines, not just one company having a monopoly on the U.S. market
    .
