(RNN) - There is a possible active shooter at Arapahoe High School in Centennial, CO which is part of the Littleton, CO school district. All schools in the area are on lockdown. The County Sheriff Grayson Robinson tells the CBS station in nearby Denver are possibly two victims, but their condition is unknown.

According to the school's website, 2,141 students attend the school with a 118 faculty members. There are 70 rooms to the school.

The shooting comes almost one year after 20 children and six adults were killed in a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newton, CT.

Two seniors at nearby Columbine High School in Littleton, CO killed 13 people, 12 students and a teacher, on April 20, 1999 before taking their own lives. They injured 24 other students, and police found explosives they had planned to detonate.

In nearby Aurora, CO in July 2012, James Holmes opened fire in a crowded movie theater during a showing of 'The Dark Knight Rises', killing 12 and injuring 70. The former neuroscience graduate student is charged with 166 counts of murder, attempted murder and weapons violations. He pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Holmes' trial had been set to being in February, but it has been indefinitely postponed so attorneys can argue whether he should undergo another psychiatric evaluation.

The shooter was a student and died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson. Officials are not releasing the gunman's identity at this time.

During a news conference, police reported there were two victims, one found during the sweep of the school. One victim was shot, it is unclear how the other victim was injured, but one has been taken to a hospital. Police said the shooter reportedly was targeting a specific teacher. "No other weapons were found other than the one that was used in the shooting," Robinson said.

The evacuation of hundreds of students was calm and orderly. Students were taken to the track on campus where they were patted down and searched by law enforcement using metal detectors.

Students were evacuated and waited to be searched waited quietly with their hands over their heads. A pickup site for parents is at a nearby church. "The response protocols around active shooters were put into place immediately," Robinson said. "The first deputy sheriffs and police officers that were on scene immediately entered the school to engage the shooter if they could locate that individual and also keep these students absolutely safe."

Since the Columbine shootings, school security has taken a large turn in the name of keeping students as safe as possible. According to CNN, administrators now want to foster school communities that essentially can protect themselves with or without the high-tech gear. "The first and best line of defense is always a well-trained, highly alert staff and student body," said Kenneth Trump, president of National School Safety and Security Services told CNN.

Physical security at schools have also been upgraded and lockdown procedure drills are occurring more frequently.

Armed School Resource Officer Confronted Arapahoe High School Shooter

On December 13, 2013, 18-year-old Arapahoe High School student Karl Pierson entered his school armed with a shotgun, a machete, and molotov cocktails intending on killing his former debate coach and possibly others. After firing three shots down a hallway and injuring one of his classmates, Pierson killed himself in a classroom. Today it was revealed why he did this: a "good guy" with a gun had him cornered.

When an armed school resource officer entered the room, Pierson believed he was cornered and turned his gun on himself, Robinson said. The entire attack lasted approximately 80 seconds and was captured by security cameras.

Wow.

A janitor informed Pierson's former debate coach to flee the school after he saw Pierson was armed with a gun, likely saving his life.

Investigators have said that they believe Pierson was planning a large-scale attack at the school due to the amount of ammunition he was caring. Claire Davis, the student wounded in the attack, remains in a coma.

Good guys with guns save lives. I shudder to think what would have happened had the resource officer not intervened.

A hero saves alot of kids using firearms... and they decide to skip on the hero.

They have no shame.

When I saw this story on our local cable news channel, they emphasized the fact that this POS bought his shotgun legally. Another attempt at pushing more extreme gun control. Little was said about this officer and bravery.

The anti-gun advocates are so warped with trying to control guns they fail to recognize that every incident is different, ever shooter is motivated by different demons. Why does no one recognize the potential. Did the debate teacher not see the conflict? Did he think this young man was incapable of irrational acts? There is something amiss in government schools when angry, frustrated, or disturbed youngsters are just ignored as if inconsequential. As a country we must find a way to better manage these relationships that have gone wrong before they are irredeemable. Or more resource officers are going to be either killing emotionally unbalanced kids or watching them shoot themselves.

Every Mass Shooting since 1950 has happened in a Gun-Free Zone, where civilians aren't allowed to legally carry a firearm.

When are we going to stop broadcasting to these deranged killers that our children are soft targets?
