Saying that "I have made terrible mistakes and have hurt the people I care about the most," a tearful Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) just admitted lying about a lewd photo he sent to a young woman and to having "inappropriate conversations" over social media and on the phone with "six women over the last three years."

He also said he is not going to resign from office.

The congressman's statement follows the posting online today of more photos of him that were allegedly sent to women in recent weeks — including some of a shirtless Weiner. The images surfaced on the BigGovernment.com website of conservative activist Andrew Breitbart.

Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., admitted Monday in a stunning press conference that he sent a lewd photo to a woman over Twitter, after claiming for days that he was hacked. Saying he is “deeply ashamed,” he also said he’s had explicit exchanges with six women over the last three years, some of which occurred after he got married in 2010.

But the seven-term congressman said he would not resign, expressing hope that he could win back the trust of his constituents. “This was me doing a dumb thing and doing it repeatedly and then lying about it,” Weiner said. “And that’s all there is.”

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, with whom Weiner said he consulted before speaking to reporters Monday, announced after Weiner’s news conference that she is calling for an ethics investigation “to determine whether any official resources were used or any other violation of House rules.”

“I am deeply disappointed and saddened about this situation, for Anthony’s wife, Huma, his family, his staff and his constituents,” Pelosi said in a written statement.

Weiner got choked up several times as he delivered his remarks and afterward took questions from the media, particularly as he discussed his wife — Huma Abedin, an aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He said he has apologized to her and, though she was not present at the press conference, said they have “no intention of splitting up.” He said she was “not happy” about his actions.

After a week of denials, Weiner opened up the press conference by saying he takes “full responsibility” for his actions. “I have made terrible mistakes that have hurt the people I care about the most and I’m deeply sorry,” Weiner said, as he proceeded to detail a host of indiscretions for nearly a half-hour.

He said his wife already knew about some of the interactions he’d had with women online before they were married but did not know that he sent the lewd Tweet a week ago. Though he repeatedly apologized for his actions, Weiner said he has never had a physical relationship with the women and has never had sex outside his marriage. He said he was never in the same room with and never personally met any of the women he had the interactions with online.

Which brings me to my next point. Unlike the left, who gleefully drool over stories of infidelities by married Republicans, I take no pleasure out of discussing the marital transgressions of Democrats. Anyone who has ever had to suffer through the news that their spouse has been having an affair, or anyone who is close to someone who has been through it knows that it’s not a laughing matter. Affairs are selfish by nature. The people who have them think nothing of anyone but themselves. They don’t take into account how badly the revelation of the affair will deeply hurt their family, their friends, and in the case of a politician, will disillusion some constituents as to their character and integrity. After all, if your elected representative can’t honor the vows they made to their spouse, how can you trust that they’ve been (or will be) completely honest with you?

Look at the trail of lies dropped over the years by indicted former Senator, twice failed candidate for President, and admitted adulterer John Edwards (D-SC/NC) if you think unfaithfulness by a candidate for elective office or an elected official should remain a “private matter.”

Weiner has said he won’t resign and will work to gain back the trust of his district. Assuming he’s not forced out by a panic-stricken DNC, ultimately it will be up to his constituency to decide as to whether or not they believe he’s worthy enough to serve another term in the US House. But whatever they decide, thanks to his brazen nature and abject stupidity his reputation will forever be stained (no pun intended) by the series of sexually inappropriate online incidents that led up to his “tearful” admission today.

I’d like to believe we’ll never hear about another Weinergate-esque scandal again, but sadly, it seems like almost every week we’re hearing about another politico who has admitted to not being faithful to their spouse. What the crap is wrong with people? I can’t imagine even for one second cheating on my s/o. Not only because I’ve seen how devastating it is to people who’ve had it happen to them, but because, well, it’s just morally wrong. Not only that, but you don’t do something to someone else that you wouldn’t want done to you. This is pretty simple and straightforward but is, unfortunately, something that all too many people who get elected to serve in office seem to forget once they get comfortable in their position of power. I don’t expect elected officials to be perfect. I don’t even expect to agree with everything they say all the time. But at the very least I do expect them to remain true to their spouse and their family. You can tell a whole lot about the kind of person you’re considering voting for by how they treat their family.

Rep. Anthony Weiner has long had a reputation for loving the spotlight, and he did nothing to dispell that image as he lingered for a excruciatingly long time at the press conference in which he admitted to sending explicit images and messages to women on the Internet. And yet, even after 27 minutes of halting, sometimes teary-eyed confession, Weinergate questions linger.

How old were the women? When a reporter asked Weiner if any of his digital flirtations were underage, he said no. Then he admitted he wasn't sure--after all, on the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog. "All I know about them is what they posted about themselves on social media," Weiner said.

Did he use congressional resources to conduct the affairs? Radar revealed that Weiner had phone sex with a least one of his contacts, she says, on his congressional phone line. The call lasted half an hour, and when the woman tried to call Weiner back on that number a few days later, she got "a recorded message that it was an outgoing U.S. Congress line only."

And Weiner might have used his staff to help a porn star he was in contact with come up with a good denial to feed the media.

Did he coach the women? TMZ reports that Weiner asked online lady friend and porn star Ginger Lee, "Do you need to talk to a professional PR type person to give u advice? I can have someone on my team call." Then, Weiner allegedly sold out his staff a little bit, adding parenthetically, "Yeah, my team is doing great. Ugh." He suggested she call the inquiries "silly," say Weiner "briefly followed me and sent me a dm saying thank you for the follow. That's it," and sprinkle the lie with "some y'alls"

Weiner then gave Lee a statement to trick reporters. "I have nothing to do with the situation involving Rep Weiner. I follow his twitter feed. And for a brief time he followed me. Much has been made of the fact that I have posted about my admiration for Rep Weiner and his politics. All I can say about that is that I'm a fan of his. Rep. Weiner sent me one short direct message thanking me for following him. I have never met Rep. Weiner and he has never sent me anything innappopriate..."

Weiner's PR advice for Lee calls into question the denials of his other "Internet women," as the New York Daily News calls them. The statements he suggested to Lee sound a bit like the one offered by Gennette Cordova, the Seattle college student who was the intended recipient of Weiner's crotch shot, to the Daily News:

"I have never met Congressman Weiner, though I am a fan. ... I've never been to New York or to DC. ... I have seen myself labeled as the 'Femme Fatale of Weinergate,' 'Anthony Weiner's 21-year-old coed mistress' and 'the self-proclaimed girlfriend of Anthony Weiner.' ... All of this is so outlandish that I don't know whether to be pissed off or amused, quite frankly."


Will Democrats force him out? Weiner broke with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi in 2006, when she was running to be speaker. She "bears him no particular love," Politico's Ben Smith and Maggie Haberman note, and on Monday, Pelosi called for an ethics committee investigation of Weiner's actions. But Weiner has some important allies as well. He was once Sen. Chuck Schumer's spokesman, and his boss "threw [Weiner] a thin lifeline," Politico says, by saying that by "fully explaining himself, apologizing to all he hurt and taking full responsibility for his wrongful actions, Anthony did the right thing." And Weiner's wife, Huma Abedin, is a longtime aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and so close to the Clintons that she's "just short of being a family member."

What will his wife do? Weiner and Abedin were an unlikely couple when they began dating in 2008, The New York Times' Ashley Parker reports. Weiner is a Jewish guy from Brooklyn, Abedin is a practicing Muslim who was raised in Saudi Arabia. And while he was a loud ladies man, she was private and elegant. But though many "important people" courted Abedin, she was won over by Weiner's sense of humor and persistence. Still, Abedin did not stand by Weiner's side as he confessed to humiliating her, as so many political wives have done. She put in a full day at the State Department instead. Weiner said Abedin knew he'd had online relationships with women before they were married, but she did not know he was lying about his Twitter account being hacked.

What does it mean for Andrew Breitbart? Breitbart doesn't have a great reputation for doggedly pursuing the truth, given that he posted a video of an Agriculture Department employee, Shirley Sherrod, edited in a way that made her look like a racist, when racial understanding was the point of her speech. Breitbart, who runs BigGovernment.com and other conservative blogs, briefly took over Weiner's press conference Monday, berating the media yet also asking for legitimacy from it, The New York Times' Jeremy W. Peters and Jennifer Preston write. Breitbart partnered with ABC News by handing over his source, he says, "to take this out of the partisan rancor realm." Even some liberals who loathe Breitbart admitted Weinergate was a victory for him.

Naked therapist offers her services

When New York Rep. Anthony Weiner confessed Monday to posting a picture of his erect penis on Twitter, he said he wouldn’t rule out seeking professional help to sort through his personal issues.

Considering his alleged tendency to take dirty photos of himself and send obscene messages to strangers, perhaps he’ll take naked therapist Sarah White up on her offer to counsel him in the nude. According to White’s website, she’s willing to give the congressman “one free Naked Therapy session to help him begin addressing his problems. As Ms. White told Mr. Weiner, the methods of Naked Therapy are particularly suited to help him overcome what she calls ‘the uncontrollable acts of arousal frenzy.’”

White, a 24-year-old psychology fiend, conducts therapy sessions sans attire in Weiner’s home state. Though the first time around gets off to a slow start, White gradually removes articles of clothing throughout her client’s visit.

“For men especially, who are less likely than women to go to therapy, it is more interesting, more enticing, more exciting,” White told the New York Daily News earlier this year. “It’s a more inspiring approach to therapy.”

White attests that Weiner, who allegedly sent explicit messages to several young females while married to Huma Abedin, will respond well to her methods.

With that, White is convinced that Weiner committed potential infidelity because he couldn’t manage his arousal brain. She might have a solution to his eyebrow-raising tendencies, and perhaps she can guide him on his quest for self-control.

“Mr. Weiner was the youngest member ever of the NY City Council,” White said. “He was a successful and respected US Representative. He is married to an aide of Hillary Clinton. Politics, Washington, public service are his life. So how could he go and do something so stupid and self-destructive? The answer is simple: he acted under the uncontrollable influences of his arousal brain, which, because he had never engaged or discussed it in a safe setting, overtook him and ruined his life. One of Anthony Weiner's Internet lovers has turned over her entire nine months of digital correspondence with the congressman to Radar. Lisa Weiss, a 40-year-old blackjack dealer in Las Vegas, began chatting with Weiner August 13, 2010, after she sent him a Facebook message. Their chats turned sexual on September 17. Long stretches of dialogue have to be bleeped, but the creepiest part might be at the end, when Weiss promises, "I am the only fb chick u can trust."

Weiss repeatedly tries to engage Weiner in political banter, but he doesn't offer much analysis, except a mention of "that wackadoodle [Sharron] [A]ngle" and a complaint that "this whole election thing is keeping me tied up." Like a fawning fan, she frequently refers to seeing Weiner on TV, fighting, in her view, the good fight. But Weiner just wants to talk about sex. And sometimes it's only Weiner's love of attention that's evident. Here's an exchange from March 16:

Weiner’s opening came in 1991, when the City Council was radically expanded, from 35 to 51 seats. One of the new districts, the 48th, would be in Southern Brooklyn. It was a neat match for Weiner. The new seat was in the heart of Schumer’s district, there was no incumbent, and the population was heavily Jewish. He jumped in the race.

He was not the favorite. Two other candidates with more name recognition, deeper ties to the community, stronger organizational support, and bigger bankrolls seemed to have the inside track: Michael Garson (the candidate of the Brooklyn Democratic organization) and Adele Cohen (the favorite of a progressive/labor coalition that backed candidates across the city in ’91). It was a low-profile race, but Weiner attracted positive reviews, aggressively campaigning and using his performer’s flair to steal the show at debates and candidate forums. But as the all-important Sept. 10 Democratic primary approached, the consensus was that he’d come up short and that, as Newsday put it in an editorial endorsing one of his opponents, he should “try again next time.”

It was at this point that Weiner’s campaign decided to blanket the district with leaflets attacking his opponents. But these were no ordinary campaign attacks: They played the race card, and at a very sensitive time. They were also anonymous.

Just weeks earlier, the Crown Heights riot — a deadly, days-long affair that brought to the surface long-standing tension between the area’s black and Jewish populations — had played out a few miles away from the 48th District. The episode had gripped all of New York and had been national news. It was just days after order had been restored that Weiner’s campaign distributed its anonymous leaflets, which linked Cohen — whose voters he was targeting in particular — to Jesse Jackson and David Dinkins, who was then New York’s mayor. It is hard to imagine two more-hated political figures in the 48th District at that moment. Jackson just a few years earlier had called New York “Hymie town,” and it was an article of faith among white voters in Weiner’s part of Brooklyn that Dinkins had protected the black rioters in Crown Heights — and thus endangered the white population — by refusing to order a harsh police crackdown. (Two years later, Dinkins would lose to Rudy Giuliani by an 80-20 percent margin in the 48th District.) The leaflets urged voters to “just say no” to the “Jackson-Dinkins agenda” that Cohen supposedly represented. At City Hall, Dinkins held up the flier and branded it “hateful.”

It’s something worth keeping in mind now, as Weiner’s career hangs in the balance. Is it unfair if he loses his political future because of a scandal as dumb as this one? Sure. But it’s also not exactly fair that he ever made it this far.

By that standard, about 75% of the Democrat party would be disqualified from office, considering that race card playing is in the unofficial Democrat handbook for how to effectively shut down discussion, and defeat and/or silence your Republican opposition in a New York minute. Bring it!

One suspects this is merely an attempt to rationalize away the bad behavior of their political allies while reserving the right to condemn similar misbehavior in their foes. Hey, [Joan] Walsh and [Amanda] Marcotte are only human. But what a rationalization it is! What they are claiming is that their side has no moral standards, and therefore there is no basis on which they may be held to account.

Not only that, but some “feminists” are treating him just like they did serial adulterer Bill Clinton during his various affairs scandals while in the Oval Office: Tepid condemnations mixed with unwavering continued support. After all Weiner, like Clinton, is a staunch defender of “women’s rights” which is code for “abortion rights.” Don’t wanna bite the hand that feeds … or something like that. Exception to the rule being Rep. Allyson Schwartz (D-PA-13) of the DCCC, a co-founder of a Philly abortion clinic who is now demanding that Weiner resign.

“He should resign and he should get treatment, real treatment,” the blunt-spoken Philadelphian said.

On Tuesday, another former DNC chairman, Virginia Senate candidate Tim Kaine, said that Weiner’s public lies are reason enough to pack it in. Several other Democratic officials, including Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.), Indiana Rep. Joe Donnelly, who is running for the Senate and Rep. Michael Michaud (D-Maine) have made clear their preference that Weiner step aside. The Associated Press reported that Rep. Mike Ross (D-Ark.), as well as Rep. Niki Tsongas (D-Mass.) have also called on Weiner to resign.
