Marriage Proposal Kills 60 Baby Turtles
(MYFOX NATIONAL) - A couple who was celebrating their engagement on the beach in Hilton Head, S.C., on Wednesday inadvertently killed 60 baby turtles.
The Hilton Head Island Packet reports that the couple and their friends had set up about 150 white luminarias -- paper bags with candles inside -- on the beach in the shape of a heart. Loggerhead turtle hatchlings instinctively follow moonlight toward the ocean where they are supposed to go shortly after they are born. But instead officials believe the lighting threw the turtles off.
Hilton Head natural resources associate Sarah Skigen, who was on daily sea turtle patrol early Wednesday, noticed turtle tracks headed in all directions except for the ocean. Many tracks encircled the luminarias where the baby turtles either died or were eaten by ghost crabs.
Skigen said the couple was distraught when they found out what they had done.
"The people were regretful," Skigen said. "They'd just gotten engaged and were bombarded with a lot of people yelling at them."
Loggerhead turtles are classified as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. They are also listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act .
Mayor Tom Peeples said, "We need to be doing everything we can to minimize the chance of having this happen again."

Sad for the turtles and sad for the people too, it certainly did not seem intentional....and now they'll have this memory instead of a joyous one...

Yea, don't they know to check on turtle migratory patterns before getting engaged? sheesh!
Seriously I feel badly for both them and the baby turtles. They obviously meant no harm.

how sad, apparently more education/signs or something is needed to prevent this type of thing from happening again

Unless they're marine biologists or highly read up on the migration/birthing habits of the turtles i don't see how they "should have known better", nor do i see how they were being selfish.
Yes, we could call them ignorant for not knowing, but seriously did YOU know the habits of this turtle breed before you read this article? How is someone supposed to know the exact day the eggs would hatch sending baby turtles to the ocean, as i'm sure no one knows anything like that for sure, hell we can't even predict when a human baby will be born with 100% accuracy, let alone any other animal on this planet!
