Yes, we could call them ignorant for not knowing, but seriously did YOU know the habits of this turtle breed before you read this article? How is someone supposed to know the exact day the eggs would hatch sending baby turtles to the ocean, as i'm sure no one knows anything like that for sure, hell we can't even predict when a human baby will be born with 100% accuracy, let alone any other animal on this planet!

If you live on the south-eastern coast you are pretty much brought up knowing about the sea turtles., and to try to protect them. So unless these people moved to South Carolina that day, then they are stupid idiots who should have known better!
Ask anyone from Florida, The east coasts of Georgia, and the Carolinas and they will tell you that its common knowledge that after sea turtles hatch, their natural instinct is to follow light ie: THE MOON to the ocean.
The sea turtles have a natural mating and birthing cycle., so EVERY YEAR AROUND THE SAME FRICKEN TIME the turtles will hatch.
I'm sure these selfish b@stards also were just going to litter the entire beach with their candles, doubtful they would have taken the time to retreave them once their "celebration" was over. They probably were throwing 6 pack plastic ring containers in the ocean & letting helium balloons fly free into the air as well.

Sorry but not everybody keeps up with the mating and birthing habits of turtles or any animals for that matter. I don't think they did anything wrong at all. Its unfortunate but other than that, not their fault. Maybe they should put some signs up letting people know the mating and birthing habits of the turtles if they don't want this to happen again.

I lived in Myrtle Beach for some time and wasn't aware, also my ex sis in law has lived in the south all her life...mainly in Wilmington and now Myrtle Beach and has never kept up on the mating/birthing cycle.
Perhaps you should go on a crusade about teaching everyone at the coast the mating and birthing habits of these turtles, after all people who just don't know are selfish b@stards as you say

If everyone did we wouldn't have as many endangered species as we do now.. It's a damned shame not everyone is in tuned with what wild life is in the area before doing something so (imho) "humanly" selfish.
But that's just me *shrug

Do you really believe they did this on purpose? If not then I don't think they were being selfish. Just uninformed.

On purpose? No.
Being uninformed is in a way being selfish. Uneducated? You bet.. It was an act of utter stupidity that deserves a bee slap...
We aren't the only life form on this planet but a lot of us act like we are the sole existence to this planet thriving... If people took the time to educate themselves on what they were doing instead of worrying what is in their lattes or what carat diamond they were proposing with (wondering if it was a conflict free diamond now) then this planet wouldn't be so effed up ecology wise.
BTW I was a registered reptile and amphibian conservationist/rehabilitator with the Alton Jones campus of RI.. That is why it pisses me off so much.. Taking care of injured wildlife as I did 8 years ago I may be more sensitive to this crap b/c I have seen the devastation that happens....It's tragic...
It's ignorant.. and just plain bee slap worthy
*I was ready to leave it as "awww " but the conservationist in me seeing the responses needed a little more 'what the hell is wrong with people and effing up their environment and the animals that deserve to live and be part of the "circle"

ElleGee, I understand your point as well as your stance on this matter, but lets be realistic shall we? How many different species of animals are there on this earth? It's impossible for everyone to just memorize/educate themselves on each and every single one of them. Of course most people know not to litter because the wildlife can and will be affected, don't dump oil, etc, that stuff is all common sense if you really think about it.
This instance with the turtles isn't so cut and dry. Perhaps some signage, like someone else suggested, is in order. You can't really blame the people for not knowing. Now had there been signs and they didn't take heed of them yes they'd be at fault, selfish, and uneducated.

Perhaps now they will get those signs and maybe a little infocenter type thing to educate the beachgoers. I'm sure they get a ton of tourists who are totally unfamiliar. Maybe that way it can be prevented from happening again.

Then again that would mean people would have to actually read the info and learn. LOL

LOL- I know that I'd read it! I'm a dork like that, everytime I see a historical or another educational type thing somewhere I read it. Hell I think I've read the wind turbines on the PA turnpike thing 3 or 4 times.

Umm being realistic would be realizing that we are not the only ones on this planet... So no, I do not think you "understand" at all. Ignorance is part of what is wrong with the human race. Maybe you need to think a little harder before you tell other people to "think about it" *snarf. It's not impossible to do research in this day and age and eff up the way they did.. How effing hard is it to google sea turtles.. No really you think about it... effing google people.... Beaches do NOT belong to humans and only humans.. Do you honestly think signs will detour people from doing stupid crap like this? How many "do not litter " signs have you seen and then seen trash on the road.... yeah.... exactly
Littering is the least of our worries when it comes to wildlife... That was just an uninformed statement there...
Don't tell me what I need to think about. I have thought about it when I did my out student research at Alton Jones and I continued it after I graduated with my degree... Yes it is cut and dry.. Don't be a fecking moron and propose to your idiot choice for a mate because all you'll do is breed idiot children that have no respect for this planet...It's called think and research about what you are doing before you do it.
It's not fecking hard.. And a lot of people do it with out it being "cut and dry". lol, that just sounds silly.. No really.. Silly. In this the information age..
it's careless, irresponsible and just plain retarded
