Horrific crashes kill 14 in Oklahoma and Indiana

I don't post much, but reading about these just made me sick. Whole families wiped out. What total and complete tragedies, I hope there wasn't much suffering. The pictures on the websites are just horrific and break my heart. The first article is long so I didn't paste it all.

MIAMI, Okla. — Nine people died Friday when a tractor-trailer slammed into a line of cars stopped by an earlier accident on a northeast Oklahoma turnpike, leaving twisted metal and debris strewn on the highway and stranding miles of traffic in scorching heat.
Eastbound traffic was stopped about 1 p.m. on the Will Rogers Turnpike northeast of Miami because of an earlier crash when the big rig slammed into at least three cars, which then crashed into more vehicles, Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lt. George Brown said.

“It looks like a war zone,” he said. “There’s mangled metal everywhere. There’s debris, fluids, dead bodies.”

Brown said the collisions had “quite possibly the largest death toll in a single crash” in state history.

Investigators don’t think the truck driver tried to stop before the crash, which left eight adults and one child dead, Brown said. The speed limit on the turnpike is 75 mph.

A criminal investigation was being conducted, as is routine after a fatal accident, and blood was drawn from the truck driver, Brown said. There was no indication that alcohol was involved, he said.

The identities of the deceased were not released pending family notifications, he said. Several other people were taken from the scene about 10 miles northeast of Miami to St. John’s Regional Medical Center and Freeman Health Center in nearby Joplin, Mo., with the most critically injured being taken by medical helicopter, OHP Capt. Scott Horton said.

At least two bodies remained in one crushed car into the evening while wrecker service workers raised

a tractor-trailer rig off it, Brown said. Three wreckers — including one that is designed specifically for moving large trucks — worked to move the big rig.

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) — An Indiana couple and their three children died Friday when their pickup truck caught fire after being crushed between two semitrailers, police said.

Traffic along Interstate 65 in northwestern Indiana had slowed about 4 a.m. as a vehicle was towed from the highway and one semitrailer could not stop quickly enough after coming over a hill, state police said. That semitrailer slammed the family's pickup truck into another semitrailer.

Brian W. Workman, 33, Joanna L. Workman, 31, and their children — 13-year-old Ashley, 8-year-old Tyler and 1-year-old Ryan — were killed. The semitrailer drivers were not injured.

Linda McCullough, who has lived a few houses away from the Workmans in Hobart for several years, recalled Ashley and Tyler visiting her when she would sit out in her yard.

"We have a quiet neighborhood here and we've all lived here for quite a while, so we're all pretty much in shock," McCullough said. "Their house is kind of a gathering place for the children. They had a pool in the back yard, and I could see the children with their towels going up there all the time."

Police closed the highway about 15 miles south of Gary for more than six hours to clean up the scorched debris.

I was just watching the news tonight, they said the death toll was 10. A little girl that was 12 just moved up from critical to fair~but she lost both of her parents.
The driver was 76, the did an extensive research on his driving, criminal record, and said that he was very healthy, no high blood pressure, no diabetes... Never had any traffic violations in his life, never toyed with alchohol. And pointed out that just because he was an older gentelman, that he was very alert, and a very good driver. And that's all I heard, cause my son DEMANDED my attention LOL

The Oklahoma crash.... that particular area is REALLY dangerous. There are wrecks there quite often. Not as bad as this one though
