(confused)
I dont think that its "ok" Im thinking its more that they're probably higher risk.

I happen to believe that our kids should be taught to do the right thing WITHOUT getting paid for it. And YES, some teens do get pregnant looking for that welfare check. It's not meant to be a lifetime thing, it's meant to help someone out through hard times.

But, it's used regularly as an income (even got to buy houses with it for the last 10 yrs) and at SOME point, you have to stop straddling the hard working folks that are doing the right thing with the payment to people who don't.

I still think it's the stupidest program I've ever seen. When do we, as Americans, get back to doing the right thing because it's the right thing to do?

We already offer free birth control, condoms in schools and abortions. What they heck else do they need to avoid pregnancy??!

Oh, yeah, let's pay them for not getting pregnant. Dumb

Not to mention, it's just not fair to all the responsible kids (the majority of teens) that have enough sense not to get pregnant.

What has this country become when we pay kids not to be idiots

I just find this so hard to believe. But to each their own. The program is already up and running so we shall see if it works. Bottom line is just to keep teens from getting pregant. Regardless I hope it works. So I guess we will just have to agree to disagree.

Good concept, but sort of a slap in the face to their peers who believe in abstinence, or at least waiting, yet don't meet the criteria due to the sister clause.

Also, I think it would be better served to be put into a fund and can only be paid directly to a college for their tuition.

I like the program after reading their mission statement on their website. It's not as if they're just bribing someone to not become pregnant or getting something for nothing. These girls have to attend classes weekly and so forth. If they are able to learn and get support to achieve what I have bolded, I'm all for it.

College Bound Sisters

http://nursing.uncg.edu/cbs/index.html

College Bound Sisters is a program designed
to help girls achieve the following goals:
Avoid pregnancy
Graduate from high school
Enroll in college
Program Description
Younger sisters of teen mothers are at risk for unplanned pregnancy. The College
Bound Sisters Program is designed for them. Two groups of girls (ages 12-14 and 15-18) meet seperately each week for 1.5 hours with adult leaders. Meetings are held on the campus of UNCG in the School of Nursing and feature food, fun, fellowship, and education. Guest speakers, campus field trips, demonstrations, and an assortment of
media covering a wide variety of topics help the program achieve its goals. In addition,
quarterly meetings are held with parents of the program participants. These meetings
provide a forum for discussion of issues related to adolescent girls.

Eligibility Criteria
A girl is eligible for CBS if she

Is between the ages of 12-16
Has a sister who had a baby before age 18
Has never been pregnant
Wants to attend college
Is willing to attend a 1.5 hour meeting each week at UNCG

College Fund
Each member who attends the meetings, is not pregnant, and is still in school has $7.00 placed in her college fund weekly. The money is relased upon enrollment in college.

Incentives
Members receive $5.00 transportation expenses when they attend a meeting. Other incentives are offered at intervals to encourage girls to stay in school and to continue participation in the program.
