Red Meat: She Who Controls the Food Controls the People

When she is not defending her celebrity climb http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories...N=US&TEMPLATE= or building her legacy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COKnp...layer_embedded the nation's self-appointed First Food Czarina has re-taken to the American roads and fawning MSM airwaves http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/lady-...ry?id=18593148 on our dime http://washingtonexaminer.com/50000-...rticle/2522730 to take far better care of us and our children than we could ever do by removing that pesky free choice option. http://washingtonexaminer.com/michel...stom_click=rss

While the news of Michelle Obama's success http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/...medium=twitter in interloping into our mouths and stomachs has been greatly exaggerated, she doubles down on her "anti-obesity" (see: people control) self-promoting campaign. http://www.politico.com/politico44/2...ty-158048.html

What better way to make 6000 of Chicago's public school children eat less than to hold them up for several hours without food or drink while attending a Michelle Obama rally? http://dailycaller.com/2013/03/04/le...a-media-event/

A very courageous fifth teacher in the Chicago Public Schools has written a scathing critique of the almost comical misery she and her students endured when they participated in a massive February 28 event kicking off Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Active Schools campaign.

The First Lady’s campaign is an effort to improve (and in some cases, bring back) physical education in American schools. White House officials called the event “a groundbreaking, earth-shattering, awesomely-inspiring day.”

Lisa Putnam and her fifth grades most certainly did not experience the event the same way, however. According to Putnam, the event at Chicago’s McCormick Place (the largest convention center in North America) was an unmitigated catastrophe.

    [...]

In her devastating piece, Putnam explains that she was initially enthusiastic about her and her students’ participation in the kickoff of the Let’s Move! campaign — not least because it offered a chance to let off steam before a grueling battery of standardized tests next week.

However, that enthusiasm waned almost immediately.

Most of the 90-minute trip to the convention center was spent sitting behind all the other busses full of kids staffers had shipped in as props.

As per the request of Michelle Obama and her massive support staff, none of the children brought any food or drinks.

After standing in line for a security check that went reasonably well, it was time to stand in line for t-shirts.

    [...]

Next was an hour-long line. Students waited to take the various places organizers had planned for them around a stage where they would see the first lady and some famous athletes, including Bo Jackson.
The kids apparently had to stand suring this staged event (adding to the standing they did while waiting in various lines leading upto it)...

When Michelle Obama finally came out, she didn’t face the children.

“She was facing the media,” reports Putnam.

What followed was a bunch of exercising. Recall, though, that the kids were instructed not to bring any food.

“They were dropping like flies,” explains Putnam. “Most of my students were sitting on the ground by the time [pop star] Jordin Sparks started singing.”

“Around 1:30 pm the concert was over,” Putnam relates. “Everyone was corralled back into the very large room we started in and went back to where we were originally waiting. They began calling buses, starting with 1-10. Imagine my thinking when I looked down at my wrist band and saw ‘bus 291.’”

Putnam says she and her students waited some two and a half hours for their bus.

“My students continually came up to me to tell me that they were hungry and ask why this was happening. We teachers feel responsible for our students and there was nothing we could do but wait. We were at the mercy of this poorly run event.”

    Let’s Move! Disaster http://cps299.wordpress.com/2013/03/...move-disaster/

    By Leah Putnam

    5th Grade Teacher

    Chicago Public Schools

If you are a parent, imagine that you take your child on a trip and they are very excited. Now imagine they have to wait on a bus and stand in straight lines for three hours straight. Then imagine after one hour of “fun” that they have to sit around and wait for three more hours that bus to pick them up. Oh, did I mention that are not allowed to have a morsel of food the entire time? Now, multiply that by 25 to 35. Sounds fun right?! That’s a little bit what the day was like for CPS students, parents and teachers at the Let’s Move! Campaign.

When offered the chance to participate in the Let’s Move! campaign, I thought it would be a lot of fun and jumped at the chance. After all, my students have been working very hard to prepare for next week’s ISAT test and deserved a to let loose a little. Had I known what this event entailed, I would have definitely taken a pass.

The day began with the buses picking us up from our school. As we arrived at McCormick Place, we passed bus after bus after bus, full of students. Our bus took its place at the end of that line, and we waited for over 45 minutes to reach our destination. I thought the 90 total minutes in a school bus full of children would be the extent of my stress, but I was a bit naive at this point.

As we entered McCormick place we were ushered immediately to metal detectors and our bags were searched. We didn’t bring food or drink as was requested, so the security check went by flawlessly. Then we waited in another line, this time for t-shirts. When my 10 year old students received their XL men’s t-shirts, I did my best to tell them with a straight face that the shirts would shrink and the girls could maybe wear them as a dress.

We were moved to a location in a large concrete room with thousands of children. We were told to keep our students in three straight quiet lines. The students stood there for almost an hour. Then, the students were ushered into a giant room with a stage and told they had to be very quiet, that there was a “surprise in there for them.” 6,000 kids quiet? Good luck guy. As the students went into the room, they were all assigned to stand in different areas. The students framed the stage on three sides and the media was seated on the four side of the rectangular square. As the commercial, I mean event, began each athlete was introduced. They all had a 1-2 minute motivational speech that was so cheesy that none of the athletes really seemed to connect with the students and the messages did not resonate. It seemed like one giant Nike advertisement. Finally, the first lady came out. Although she was stunning and her message was powerful, her back was to the children. She was facing the media. I couldn’t help wondering, who is this event really for? Then I realized my students were just a backdrop to this campaign/commercial.

Finally, the exercise program began. I enjoyed watching Bo Jackson trying to keep up with the squat twists and Rahm Emanuel’s teeny tiny t-shirt. My students were not enjoying it at all. Not because they are not fit, because it was 1 pm (2 hours past their usual lunch time). They were dropping like flies, most of my students were sitting on the ground by the time Jordin Sparks started singing.

Around 1:30 pm the concert was over, everyone was corralled back into the very large room we started in and went back to where we were originally waiting. They began calling buses, starting with 1-10. Imagine my thinking when I looked down at my wrist band and saw “bus 291.” The next two and a half hours broke my heart as my students continually came up to me to tell me that they were hungry and ask why this was happening. We teachers feel responsible for our students and there was nothing we could do but wait. We were at the mercy of this poorly run event. Some students entertained themselves by making their t-shirts into a ball and throwing them around, some laid down on the ground miserably. My pregnant coworker was dehydrated and hadn’t eaten in 10 hours. It was mentally and physically exhausting for every teacher, parent and student stuck at McCormick Place. Many of the parent chaperones had to make various arrangements for their younger students that they could no longer pick up from school. Many of our students are responsible for their younger siblings and our school had to make arrangements for these children. Some of those parents had worked the night before, and had to go back to work when we returned. The after school programs we teach were either cancelled or taken over by other teachers.

At 3:52 we finally departed from McCormick Place, exhausted, deflated, and hungry. This event was clearly not about the children, because their needs were not put first. Politics and big business before children; was this event an eerie foreshadowing of what is to come for education in Chicago?

Well, I guess nobody had an "Obama phone" to call for a pizza and 2 liter bottle of Mt. Dew... http://babalublog.com/2013/03/04/red...ls-the-people/

    Michelle Obama: ‘Busy single mother’
    By Doug Powers • April 4, 2013 09:53 PM

Sometimes, when you least expect it, parapraxis rears its ugly head:

    **Written by Doug Powers http://michellemalkin.com/2013/04/04...single-mother/

During an interview with Burlington, Vt. CBS affiliate WCAX, first lady Michelle Obama described herself as a "busy single mother" before quickly correcting herself, explaining, "Sometimes when you've got the husband who's president, it can feel a little single, but he's there."

Michelle Obama: White House garden ‘semi-open to the public,’
    - can be seen through the fence

By Vince Coglianese 12:51 PM 05/07/2013

Tuesday’s view of the White House garden below

Michelle Obama told an audience attending her book signing Tuesday that the White House garden is still “semi-open to the public” because visitors can see it through the fence. She was promoting her book, “American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America” released in May 2012.

“[M]y goal in this book is to share the story of the creation of the garden,” Michelle Obama said during the Tuesday morning signing at Washington’s Politics and Prose Bookstore, “because while it is semi-open to the public — because if you visit the White House along the South Lawn, you can see the garden from outside of the White House. But millions of people don’t get a chance to come to Washington. They hear about the garden; they don’t get an opportunity to see it,” she said.

Visitors standing outside the fence of the South Lawn can see portions of the garden at least 100 yards away, though the view can be somewhat obscured by a wall of trees and shrubbery.

The Obama administration stopped allowing visitors to tour the White House grounds beginning on March 9 “due to staffing reductions resulting from sequestration.”

Michelle Obama gets right down in heckler's face at D.C. fundraiser
    11 hrs ago

Michelle Obama threatened to walk out of a private fundraiser Tuesday night when a heckler interrupted her speech.

After lesbian activist Ellen Sturtz demanded more action on LGBT issues, the first lady made eye contact with her and, according to a White House transcript of the event, said "One of the things that I don't do well is this. Do you understand?"

Reports from the room say Mrs. Obama then "left the lectern and moved over to the protester."

She was quoted as telling Sturtz, "Listen to me or you can take the mic, but I'm leaving. You all decide. You have one choice."

After the audience reportedly asked Mrs. Obama to stay, Sturtz was escorted out. "[Mrs. Obama] came right down in my face ... I was taken aback," Sturtz said in a later interview. [Source http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...ve-fundraiser/ ]

    Hahahaha... Liberals arguing with liberals

    ..

I think if there was more respect for the First Family, things like this wouldn't happen.

But, you need to earn respect to receive respect.

    ..

I think that Ms. Obama handled herself exceptionally well. Except in one respect; approaching Ms. Sturtz as she had was a confrontational move. The same issue could've been resolved had Ms. Obama stepped to the side and offered Ms. Sturtz the podium. Otherwise, I commend her ability to keep a cool head.

As far as Ms. Sturtz is concerned, she could have easily waited to speak with the first lady directly or to say her piece during a question and answer session. Causing a disruption during an event of this type gives the authorities every right to remove her. It's a shame that a proponent of LGBT rights had resorted to such a crude method in spreading her message.

Michelle Obama takes credit for decline in childhood obesity that began a decade ago

According to a report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) earlier today, obesity rates among low-income preschoolers modestly declined in 19 U.S. states and territories between 2008 and 2011. http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwr...m62e0806a1.htm

For the first time in her adult life, First Lady Michelle Obama is proud of our nation’s low-income overweight kids http://www.letsmove.gov/blog/2013/08...s-among-low-in — and she specifically cites her Let’s Move! initiative as a factor:

Today’s announcement reaffirms my belief that together, we are making a real difference in helping kids across the country get a healthier start to life. We know how essential it is to set our youngest children on a path towards a lifetime of healthy eating and physical activity, and the more than 10,000 childcare programs participating in the Let’s Move! Child Care initiative are doing vitally important work on this front.
Sam Kass, the executive director of Let’s Move!, was even less bashful about taking credit: http://www.letsmove.gov/

When we launched Let’s Move! in 2010, many people saw no end in sight to rising rates of childhood obesity. But, today a light at the end of the tunnel is beginning to emerge. The evidence is in, and we could not be more excited!

Many Twitter users took time out to personally thank Michelle Obama for her great work:

We hate to rain on the parade, but does Mrs. Obama really deserve to be feasting on all this praise?

The period of time analyzed by the CDC researchers was 2008 to 2011. Let’s Move! wasn’t announced until February 2010. By the time the program was implemented, much of the observed decline in childhood obesity presumably had already occurred.

But that’s not the worst of it. Scientific American, in an article published last December, said that the decline in childhood obesity among low-income kids began in 2003. http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/...g-nation-wide/

That would be six years before the Obamas arrived at the White House:

A subtle but important shift in early childhood obesity rates in this low-income population seems to have begun in 2003. Obesity rates increased from 13.05 percent in 1998 to 15.21 percent in 2003. Soon, however, obesity rates began decreasing, reaching 14.94 percent by 2010. Extreme obesity followed a similar pattern, increasing from 1.75 percent to 2.22 percent from 1998 to 2003, but declining to 2.07 percent by 2010.

Public health agencies and the Obama Administration have made battling childhood obesity a priority, although these findings suggest that early childhood obesity rates, at least, were already beginning to decline nearly a decade ago.
When, ahem, Republican President George W. Bush was in office.

But never mind all that. Think of all the kids who have had the opportunity to enjoy Michelle Obama’s delicious school lunches.

Childhood Obesity Rate Shows Signs Of National Decline For First Time In Decades
    By MIKE STOBBE 08/06/13 07

ATLANTA -- For many years, doctors have been wringing their hands as more and more U.S. children grew fat. Now, that may be changing, with the first evidence of a national decline in childhood obesity.

In 18 states, there were at least slight drops in obesity for low-income preschoolers, health officials said Tuesday.

After decades on the rise, childhood obesity rates recently have essentially been flat. A few places – Philadelphia, New York City and Mississippi – reported improvements in the last couple of years. But the report from the Centers for Disease and Control Prevention shows signs of wider-ranging progress.

"Now, for the first time, we're seeing a significant decrease in childhood obesity" nationally, said Dr. Thomas Frieden, CDC director.

But rates are still too high, he added. One in 8 preschoolers is obese in the United States, and it's even more common in black and Hispanic kids.

"It's not like we're out of the woods," he said during a conference call with reporters Tuesday.

Obesity continues to be one of the nation's leading public health problems – health officials call it a longstanding epidemic. A third of U.S. children and teens and more than two-thirds of adults are obese or overweight.

Some hope the report marks a turning point.

"I really do think this is a pivotal moment," said Sam Kass, executive director of a White House initiative to reduce childhood obesity.

Preschoolers who are overweight or obese are five times more likely than other children to be heavy as adults, which means greater risks of high cholesterol, high blood sugar, asthma and even mental health problems.

Tuesday's study used height and weight measurements from nearly 12 million low-income children in 40 states. The data was collected from 2008 through 2011.

Most of the children ages 2 to 4 were enrolled in the federal Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program, which provides food vouchers and other services.

It's harder to get national data on preschoolers of more affluent families, so it's not clear if the trend applies to all young children. But experts note that low-income kids tend to be heavier.

"If you're going to look at the problem of obesity early in childhood, the group at highest risk are low-income kids. That's what makes this data so valuable for understanding trends in this major public health problem," said Dr. Matthew Davis, a University of Michigan researcher who tracks health policy and children's health issues.

The biggest declines were in Florida, Georgia, Missouri, New Jersey and South Dakota. Each saw their obesity numbers fall at least 1 percentage point.

Other states showing improvement: California, Iowa, Idaho, Kansas, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico and Washington. A substantial decline was also seen in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

"These signs of progress tell a clear story: we can reverse the childhood obesity epidemic. It isn't some kind of unstoppable force," said Dr. James S. Marks, in a statement. He's senior vice president at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, a philanthropy that supports programs to tackle obesity.

Despite the improvements, the numbers are still disappointing. Hawaii was the best, with about 9 percent of low-income preschoolers estimated to be obese in 2011. Even with some progress, California was worst, at nearly 17 percent.

Ten states were not included; some had changed how they track height and weight. One of the missing states is Texas, which has one of the largest populations of low-income children and is known to have a significant problem with childhood obesity.

Of the remaining 40 states, 18 showed at least slight improvement and 19 states and Puerto Rico had no significant change. Three states – Colorado, Pennsylvania and Tennessee – increased.

The last CDC study to look at childhood obesity data this way found very different results. From 2003 to 2008, significant declines in preschooler obesity were seen in only nine states and increases were seen in 24 states.

"We're seeing great progress," said the CDC's Ashleigh May, lead author of the new study.

The report didn't answer why some states improved while most others held steady, and Davis said there's a pressing need to do more research and understand how some states were able to scale back.

CDC officials said a change in WIC policies probably played a major role. The changes – instituted in 2009 – eliminated juice from infant food packages, provided less saturated fat, and made it easier to buy fruits and vegetables. Breast-feeding rates have been increasing, and kid's raised on mother's milk tend to have lower obesity rates, experts said.

Childhood obesity has been a focus of the Obama White House, with first lady Michelle Obama leading a campaign called "Let's Move!" Kass, the program's chief administrator, said thousands of preschools and day care centers across the country have pledged to increase physical playtime and serve healthier foods.

"While this announcement reflects important progress, we also know that there is tremendous work still to be done to support healthy futures for all our children," Michelle Obama said in a statement.

MO is taking credit for this except....The period of time analyzed by the CDC researchers was 2008 to 2011. Let’s Move! wasn’t announced until February 2010.

    ..

Yeah, the problem is Scientific American published a study last year and it showed that the decline started in 03. So randomly selecting 08-11 is pretty pointless.

    ...

When 20% of your sample didn't report, the results are meaningless. I'm somewhat stunned, but certainly at least dismayed as to why this is a story. Take 40 random Pages out of your favorite 200 page novel and see If it still makes sense. Slow news day I get but this is a stretch.

If Obama wanted to curb obesity he and the wife would make welfare apply to fruits, vegetables, meat, grains, milk, juice, fresh water and one or two other staples only. After all, it's not a lifestyle it's supposed to be nutrition. Add to it a requirement to do something for your EBT card. As is, we all know there is not one bit less obesity because the welfare scheme helps huge processed food companies extort money from the tax payers. It addicts people to their junk and there is a whole industry of lifelong politicians who get their cut with this whole scheme.

There's no demonstrable change in obesity. To get one, quit robbing the workers to give policians, addictitve processed food a lifelong way to addict people to garbage.

As Twitchy reported, Michelle Obama’s assertion that her Let’s Move! campaign played an important role in reducing the country’s rate of childhood obesity is, in a word, bogus. Too bad David Axelrod missed our memo:

Hypocrisy Update: Obama’s State Dinner More Than 2,500 Calories
February 11, 2014 By Jennifer Burke

Michelle Obama has made it her cause to tackle childhood obesity with her two failed signature programs ‘Let’s Move’ and her healthy lunch school program. Although constantly pushing for healthy eating, both of the Obamas came come under fire in the past for failure to lead in this area by example. On Tuesday night, Barack and Michelle Obama will host French President Francois Hollande at a State Dinner. The dinner menu has been released and the calorie content is greater than the daily allowance recommended by the U.S. government! At 2,500 calories, this State Dinner boasts nearly 1,000 calories more than a Burger King Whopper combo meal.

The menu for the state dinner is an elaborate 4-course meal featuring rich and fatty foods, cheeses, and sweets. Oh, and don’t forget the wine which will be from areas of California, Washington, and Monticello, VA ranging in price from $30 to $65 a bottle. The meal has been criticized by Rep. Rodney Ellis (R-IL), an open critic of the school lunch requirements instituted by the Obama administration. Ellis referred to this elaborate, lavish, high calorie state dinner as ‘the height of hypocrisy’.

Washington Times: “Even if you’re estimating a small cut of steak, this is a menu where you’re talking 2,500 calories, which is almost three times as much as what the first lady and the USDA allow our school kids to eat in the school lunch program,” Mr. Davis said.

Mr. Davis, who said school districts need more flexibility in their meal options, has introduced a bill that includes the requirement for state dinners and meals served in the White House cafeteria to abide by the same low-calorie guidelines as school lunches.

The menu for the dinner honoring French President Francois Hollande features a main course of dry-aged rib eye beef served with blue cheese, 12 varieties of potatoes and quail eggs.

The first course is American Osetra caviar, farmed from sturgeon in estuaries in Illinois, followed by a “winter garden salad.”

Dessert is a selection of sweets: a chocolate malted cake that combines bittersweet chocolate from Hawaii and tangerines from Florida, served with vanilla ice cream made in Pennsylvania. There will also be fudge made from Vermont maple syrup, lavender shortbread cookies and cotton candy dusted with orange zest.
An expected 350 people will be in attendance at this State Dinner. Providing special musical entertainment for the event is singer Mary J. Blige. Costs of Obama’s first six State Dinners reportedly top $1.5 million. This figure does not include a dinner hosted in honor of British Prime Minister David Cameron in 2012.
