Man spent $1,000 a week on beer ?

SYDNEY (Reuters) - An Australian man convicted of his seventh drink-driving charge was spending about A$1,000 ($972) a week on beer -- enough to buy more than 2,500 small bottles a month, a newspaper said Tuesday.

The heartbroken construction worker began drowning his sorrows after breaking up with his partner five years ago, the Northern Territory News said, quoting his defense lawyer as telling a court in Australia's remote, tropical north.

The magistrate declined to jail the father of four, Michael Leary, noting he had quit drinking since his latest arrest, but he banned Leary from buying or even holding a beer for 12 months.

The magistrate also poked fun at Leary's favorite beer, Melbourne Bitter, in a part of the country where drinkers can be as loyal to beer brands as they are to football teams. "(That is) poor judgment on two counts there -- drinking that much and drinking Melbourne Bitter" magistrate Vince Luppino was quoted as saying.

NY man in offensive costume must apologize

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - A judge has ordered a 19-year-old man to write an apology to a the city of Saratoga Springs in New York for dressing in an offensive costume at a high school graduation.

Calvin Morett had pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct for dressing in a 6-foot penis costume at the graduation at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. A video of his visit last month has appeared on YouTube.

The judge has also ordered Morett to pay to have the apology published in a local newspaper, pay court fees and perform 24 hours of community service.

GORHAM, Maine - Mara Ranger will be a little paranoid doing laundry now. When she was removing clothes from the washing machine at her Maine farmhouse Wednesday, the clothes moved. She told WMTW-TV, "I jumped back" and saw a snake. She quickly shut the lid and called for help.

Maine Animal Damage Control operator Richard Burton reached into the machine and pulled and pulled — all 8 feet of a reticulated python.

Burton guesses the snake got into Ranger's washing machine through water pipes. The snake's future home will be York Animal Kingdom in York.

Ranger is going to start looking into every corner of her washing machine. She says, "I'm going to be looking in the tub first — before and after, maybe even during, the rinse cycle."

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Two practical jokers are behind bars for setting their passed-out drinking buddy's crotch ablaze while boozing in Grover Beach. Matthew Craig Pillers and Jack Brent Nicholas Keiffer pleaded no contest to a felony great bodily injury charge.

Prosecutors say the 22-year-old Pillers, a parolee, was sentenced to two years in prison and the 19-year-old Keiffer got 45 days in San Luis Obispo County jail.

Elliot Tuleja was passed out when the men poured cologne on the man's groin and set him on fire on Jan. 18. Tuleja had second-degree burns on his testicles.

PARIS (Reuters) - France's data protection authority has given permission for a nudist resort to keep a "black list" of guests barred from its facilities, the organization said.

The Rene Oltra nudist center in southern France was obliged to seek permission after a person complained of being denied a reservation, the authority said on its website.

French law requires organizations to seek authorization to keep lists of individuals denied use of their services.

Contacted by Reuters, the resort declined to give further details regarding individual's exclusion from its site.

The centre's rules require guests to abide by its "naturist ethic" of nudity at all times, weather permitting, and bans upsetting other guests or failing to observe hygiene standards. "But nudity is not exhibitionism. Any indecent behavior will be sanctioned by immediate exclusion," the rules say.

117 cats, a raccoon, and a rabbit found at Omaha home

OMAHA, Neb. - Humane society workers have found 117 cats, a raccoon and a rabbit in a north Omaha house. The discovery came Wednesday after Council Bluffs, Iowa, police caught the 54-year-old woman who lives at the house reportedly stealing cat food. Officials say she smelled like cat urine.

It isn't the first time the woman has been in trouble for having too many cats. At one time the humane society pulled more than 200 cats from her house.

Many of the cats taken Wednesday were sick and the floor was covered in feces. Some of the cats were dead.

The woman faces possible citations for cruelty to animals and other charges.

OMAHA, Neb. -- A man convicted of drunken driving this week tried to use Wite-Out to cover up his crime, prosecutors said.

Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said surveillance video from the night Juan Briceno, 33, was booked into jail shows Briceno drinking from a bottle of correction fluid to cover the alcohol on his breath. The tape shows Briceno wiping his mouth on his hand and shirt after taking a drink.

Kleine said he's not surprised at what some people will do once they are arrested.

"There was an article recently about a guy who tried to eat his underwear while awaiting a Breathalyzer test," Kleine said. "He thought it would somehow mask the test result. Criminals do some strange things, and this is an example of one of those circumstances."

Police officers spotted the Wite-Out on Briceno's hand and confronted him about it. He was taken for a blood test and tested at 3.5 times the legal limit of 0.08, prosecutors said.

Briceno is awaiting sentencing.
