Baby found dead in fire pit

This is absolutly disturbing, so very impossible as originally told, I cannot believe the things people to do innocent children. In my opinion anyone who hurts a child should die. I may be going to far here but why do people get away with intentionally harming children? And by get away I mean someone spends a few yrs in jail an comes out like nothing ever happened.

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- Police have arrested the father of a 7-month-old baby who burned to death after falling into a fire pit.

Investigators took the boy's father, 37-year-old Alberto Rios, in for further questioning Tuesday afternoon, then later placed him under arrest at 4:45 p.m.

Rios was to be booked into the King County Jail for investigation of manslaughter.

Rios initially told police he had fallen asleep in the back yard bench on Saturday night with his baby son lying on his chest. When he woke up, the child was missing.

He said he went inside to ask his wife if she had the baby, and when they returned to the yard they found the boy covered with burns in the fire pit at the house in the 2600 block of SW 333rd Place.

Neighbors rushed over when they heard screams, but it was too late to save the boy.

Neighbor Levi Thomas said the baby's name was Diego.

"He was your typical 6-month-old, all smiles and coos, vibrant and young, waiting for a chance to grow," he said.

The baby's mother is said to be heartbroken and angry over her son's death.

"She is just everything right now, everything. I can't blame her," said Sonya Squires, a friend.

Police believe the baby's death may have been a horrible accident, but were running blood tests on Rios for traces of drugs and alcohol. The results were not expected for several days.

Detectives were also questioning neighbors.

"We're trying to talk to anyone who would have been at the house in the previous 24 hours, even," said police spokesperson Cathy Schrock. "We're talking to everyone to try to put together a timeline as to what led up to this tragic incident."

Child Protective Services said it has never had a case involving this family. A social worker contacted the baby's mother, who said she is willing to work on a safety program to keep her 4-year-old daughter safe.

Bail has been set at $1 million for the father of a 7-month-old boy who suffered fatal injuries in a fire pit at the family home in Federal Way, Wash.

Thirty-eight-year-old Alberto Rios is being held for investigation of manslaughter. King County prosecutors face a Friday deadline for filing charges.

Deputy Prosecutor Steven Kim says he sought the high bail because Rios is an illegal alien who has been deported twice to Mexico and could be deported a third time and because the man blames himself for his son’s death and might harm himself.

The King County medical examiner’s office said Wednesday that the baby died of smoke inhalation and suffered burns over 100 percent of his body. The death was ruled a homicide.

Federal Way police who were called to the family home early Sunday found the father holding the lifeless child.

He shouldn't have been able to be in this country for the third friggin time!!

If the neighbors heard the parents why didn't they hear the baby when it "fell" in the fire? I agree.....total bs

The neighbors may have been asleep that night when the baby 'fell' in but it was the next morning when they heard the parents screaming. I'm assuming they were up by then.

KENT, Wash. — A Federal Way man has pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter in the death of his 7-month-old son, who died after he apparently fell into a backyard fire pit while his father slept.

Alberto Rios pleaded guilty Tuesday in King County court in the death of 7-month-old Diego Alberto Rios-Santana.

Court documents say Rios and his wife, Maria Santana, hosted a party at their home on the night of June 21, with a fire burning in a backyard fire pit.

Court documents say that after guests left, the couple’s son was crying and Rios told his wife he would take the baby outside. Police say he fell asleep, and after he awoke about midnight, the baby’s body was found in the fire pit.

The King County medical examiner’s office says Diego died of smoke inhalation and burns to his entire body.

Alberto Rios could be sentenced to up to two years in prison when he is sentenced Oct. 3, and could be deported to his native Mexico after his release.

something still doesn't sound right....wonder if dad got frustrated with the baby? And they're going to deport him again? Why? so he can just come right back here and make more kids to not take care of

wow up to 2 whole yrs for killing a child and I love how they said he could be deported after his release.......if ya ask me this guy got away with much more than he is being charged with.

I completely agree...2 years is nothing. There's a child who needed to be buried instead of getting to live his life. He doesn't get to just stay buried for 2 years and then continue his life, he stays dead. The jerk needs to be there a lot longer.

Something is wrong. If he was "asleep" wouldn't the SCREAMING BABY at his feet have woke him up ? Infants scream like crazy over a diaper tape scratching them .... don't you thing dropping into a fire ( at best a bed of coals and embers ) would provoke a response enough to wake someone "sleeping" an arms reach away ??

This ruling only shows how "disposable" our children are becoming in this society.
