Man charged in beating death of toddler

A Fayetteville man accused of beating a 1-year-old to death has been arrested in South Carolina, lawmen say.
Federal marshals took Marcus Dontell Miller, 32, of the 2900 block of Dwelle Drive, into custody Tuesday in Greenville, said Debbie Tanna, spokeswoman for the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
He is charged with first-degree murder and felony child abuse.
Miller had been seeing the child’s mother, whose name and address were not immediately available, Tanna said. The mother left the baby in Miller’s care Saturday while she went to work, Tanna said.
The child was found dead in a bedroom, Tanna said.
The baby died from blows to the head, according to the state Medical Examiner’s Office.
Miller left the home Saturday, before the mother awoke, Tanna said. Investigators say he took the woman’s car, cell phone and money.
Miller is being held in Greenville while he awaits is return to Cumberland County, Tanna said.
