[i]Louisiana needs him right now. He ran for the Gov's office on a platform of breaking the cycle of corruption in our state and really moving forward with reforms that are sorely needed down here. If he jumped to the national ticket without fulfilling his promise to the people that voted him in, it would not sit well.

Some Jindal quotes:

Quote:
Voters are craving leadership, authenticity, principled conservatism, ethical standards. -Bobby Jindal

The same people who rightfully criticized FEMA and the slow government response want the same government to run our health care. Don’t they see the irony? -Bobby Jindal

Those who defend the status quo can go quietly, or go loudly, but they’ve got to go. -Bobby Jindal
Jindal is a fine man. I do not expect McCain to make that his pick though. McCain does not want to be upstaged. He is in a bit of a pickle with his base over immigration so I am predicting that he will pick a conservative with some anti-illegal immigration bona-fides to pull in the conservative vote. With the VP being a figurehead position, it would not matter to McCain that his VP is anti-illegal immigration.

He is the future of the GOP.

The article above was forwarded to me by a friend...here are the comments sent with the link :

Quote:
First off, as a former news producer in Louisiana, I had the opportunity to interview Jindal one night. He had one guy with him, there were no off limits questions and he sat there for, I believe, 30-45 minutes. He didn’t act like he had somewhere to go or try and evade any questions and believe me … I asked him everything I could think of. I was trying to feel him out and I liked what I saw and heard. I voted for Bobby when he ran against the “Queen Bee,” Kathleen Blanco and I voted for him in this election. He is for real. I have been following his agenda and actions since he took office and surprisingly? He’s done exactly what he said he would. I would love to see him moving into the White House, but I’m sorry America, Louisiana needs him more than you do. I will proudly vote for him when the time comes to make the next move, but that is not until 2012 or 2016. Truthfully? I know he would refuse if asked to serve as VP. If he didn’t? I would be extremely disappointed and disallusioned.

Thanks Bobby, for daring to take on the cesspool that is Louisiana politics. God bless you and godspeed.

Signed,
A Proud Coonass

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal appears on "Tonight Show"
April 29, 2008 10:04 AM PDT

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Governor Bobby Jindal touted Louisiana's hurricane recovery efforts and tossed aside rumors he could be a possible running mate for Republican presidential contender John McCain during an appearance tonight on NBC's "Tonight Show."

Host Jay Leno introduces the 36-year-old Jindal as the youngest governor in the country and as a possible vice presidential contender.

For his final question, Leno notes McCain's trip to Louisiana last week and asked whether Jindal was flattered to be mentioned as a potential running mate.

Jindal replied: "It's flattering, but I like the job I've got now," reiterating plans to run for re-election.

Leno also asked the governor about his Indian heritage and Jindal discussed recent changes to the state's ethics laws, while Leno talked of Louisiana's corrupt reputation.

The "Tonight Show" isn't Jindal's only appearance on the national stage this week. He's scheduled to speak to the National Press Club in Washington on Friday.

Bobby Jindal, exorcist?
June 11, 2008
by Allahpundit

For your late-evening reading pleasure. TPM’s in full squeal over having dug up this very minor bit of oppo research, and while I’m certainly not the guy to scold them for scoffing at possession and faith healing, I do find it encouraging that (a) they’re already worried about him and (b) the best the left has been able to do thus far by way of attacking him is smearing/mocking his faith. The guy must be squeaky clean if they’re this desperate for material.

Coming in 2012: Democrats versus Catholics!

Is Bobby Jindal -- Who May Be On McCain's Veep Shortlist -- An Exorcist?
By Eric Kleefeld and Kate Klonick - June 11, 2008, 4:42PM

Bobby Jindal, the 36-year old governor of Louisiana, is being taken seriously by the national press as a candidate on the shortlist to be John McCain's Vice President. No one doubts that he's a political prodigy -- his impressive resume includes stints as president of the state university system, a Congressman and now governor. But one of Jindal's job titles hasn't gotten much attention -- and it just might prompt a few questions if his Veep candidacy gains steam: Exorcist.

As others noted during his 2003 and 2007 gubernatorial campaigns, in an essay Jindal wrote in 1994 for the New Oxford Review, a serious right-wing Catholic journal, Jindal narrated a bizarre story of a personal encounter with a demon, in which he participated in an exorcism with a group of college friends. And not only did they cast out the supernatural spirit that had possessed his friend, Jindal wrote that he believes that their ritual may well have cured her cancer.

Reading the article leaves no doubt that Jindal -- who graduated from Brown University in 1991, was a Rhodes Scholar, and had been accepted at Yale Law School and Harvard Medical School when he wrote the essay -- was completely serious about the encounter. He even said the experience "reaffirmed" his faith.

Jindal's affection for battling demons never surfaced during Jindal's failed run for governor in 2003 or his successful one in 2007. The state Dems did make an issue in 2007 out of Jindal's extreme Catholicism and his view of Protestant tenets as heretical, but the effort provoked a backlash among voters who thought the assault was religious bigotry. So Dems didn't make an issue out of Jindal's experiment.

But Jindal's battle with the dark forces may become an issue should his Veep candidacy proceed. While it's hardly a blockbuster revelation, it could provide fodder for bloggers and late-night comics to turn his candidacy into a media sideshow.

If you're interested in the details about Jindal's spiritually experimental past, we have lots more for you after the jump. It's lively stuff.

In the essay (purchase required), Jindal describes an emotional friendship with a classmate, "Susan," recently diagnosed with skin cancer and reeling after the suicide of a close friend. Susan's behavior becomes stranger, and she is surrounded by "sulfuric" smells. Finally, one night at a prayer meeting, she collapses in a seizure -- and the exorcism begins:

Quote:
The students, led by Susan's sister and Louise, a member of a charismatic church, engaged in loud and desperate prayers while holding Susan with one hand. Kneeling on the ground, my friends were chanting, "Satan, I command you to leave this woman." Others exhorted all "demons to leave in the name of Christ." It is no exaggeration to note the tears and sweat among those assembled. Susan lashed out at the assembled students with verbal assaults.
Jindal then describes how the whole situation made him physically uncomfortable, and he wondered if the same demon afflicting Susan was responsible for his state of nervousness:

Quote:
Whenever I concentrated long enough to begin prayer, I felt some type of physical force distracting me. It was as if something was pushing down on my chest, making it very hard for me to breathe. . . Though I could find no cause for my chest pains, I was very scared of what was happening to me and Susan. I began to think that the demon would only attack me if I tried to pray or fight back; thus, I resigned myself to leaving it alone in an attempt to find peace for myself.
After a lull in the event -- it in fact lasted "a few hours" by Jindal's reckoning -- Susan attempted to run away, but was dutifully pinned back on the floor by her friends:

Quote:
Maybe she sensed our weariness; whether by plan or coincidence, Susan chose the perfect opportunity to attempt an escape. She suddenly leapt up and ran for the door, despite the many hands holding her down. This burst of action served to revive the tired group of students and they soon had her restrained once again, this time half kneeling and half standing.
After what sounds like a number of hours, and a failed attempt at getting help from a preacher (he refused to assist), the exorcism finally concludes in dramatic fashion:

Quote:
It appeared as if we were observing a tremendous battle between the Susan we knew and loved and some strange evil force. But the momentum had shifted and we now sensed that victory was at hand.
While Alice and Louise held Susan, her sister continued holding the Bible to her face. Almost taunting the evil spirit that had almost beaten us minutes before, the students dared Susan to read biblical passages. She choked on certain passages and could not finish the sentence "Jesus is Lord." Over and over, she repeated "Jesus is L..L..LL," often ending in profanities. In between her futile attempts, Susan pleaded with us to continue trying and often smiled between the grimaces that accompanied her readings of Scripture. Just as suddenly as she went into the trance, Susan suddenly reappeared and claimed "Jesus is Lord."

With an almost comical smile, Susan then looked up as if awakening from a deep sleep and asked, "Has something happened?" She did not remember any of the past few hours and was startled to find her friends breaking out in cheers and laughter, overwhelmed by sudden joy and relief.
Jindal writes proudly about the experiment's conclusion: "When the operation occurred, the surgeons found no traces of cancerous cells. Susan claimed she had felt healed after the group prayer and can remember the sensation of being 'purified.'"

Jindal's office has not yet responded to requests for comment.

Late update: This post originally asserted that we "discovered" Jindal's essay, but several readers have brought to our attention that we are not the first to blog on this subject. Daily Kingfish and DailyKos discussed Jindal's exorcism experience during his gubernatorial campaigns in 2003 and 2007, and Jezebel parodied it as recently as last month. The topic has renewed relevance now that Jindal is being discussed as a possible vice presidential candidate. But credit where credit is due for these earlier reports.

Bobby Jindal is on the ball
August 31, 2008 11:03 PM

Pay close attention to how GOP Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is working ’round the clock to prepare his state for Hurricane Gustav. As the nutroots wish ill on conservatives and pray to God for our demise, Gov. Jindal is on the ball, working feverishly to ensure the safety and comfort of his residents. No whining or finger-pointing. Action, not talk. I direct you to his 4am coastline evacuation order this morning, anounded with enough time for people to make preparations. He held a press conference with DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff this afternoon, after he visited Lakefront Airport earlier today to thank the National Guard for their support in evacuating medical patients out of South Louisiana. He also signed a memorandum of understanding between Louisiana and Missouri and Tennessee for the use of their National Guard forces assisting evacuation and response operations; coordinated special needs shelters with several other states; and worked with seven states and the feds to stage evacation support, utility workers, and search and rescue teams.

This is how to be prepared:

· The state has 700 buses contracted – these are all within a 500-mile radius.

· These 700 buses will accommodate 35,000 people.

· These buses will be supplemented by an air and rail evacuation plan, which is led by FEMA.

· The state has up to 10,000 spaces for Critical Special Needs evacuees - these are individuals that have no transportation of their own. These shelters are state run.

· Additionally, the American Red Cross, in conjunction with local parishes, have spaces available for up to 68,000 evacuees in parish locations throughout the state.

· The state has 564,000 MREs pre-positioned in Louisiana.

· The state already has 525,000 liters of water pre-positioned in Louisiana.

· The state is ready to provide food and water to 350,000 responders and folks who remain in the state because they cannot evacuate

· FEMA has contracts in place for additional supplies, and they are currently working to load up these supplies and move them to Louisiana.

Quote:
BATON ROUGE – Today, Governor Bobby Jindal met with the unified command of the emergency operation center at GOSHEP to receive an update on the state’s preparedness efforts surrounding the possible impact of Hurricane Gustav in Louisiana.

The Governor’s briefing from the National Weather Service reported that the center of the storm was broken up and has re-strengthened as it is approaching Jamaica. Currently, it is projected to be in the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday, and move toward the Louisiana coast on Tuesday morning.

Governor Jindal said, “At this point, projections show that we could see tropical storm force winds along our coast as early as late Sunday night. This could potentially affect anywhere from New Orleans to Lake Charles, depending on the direction of the storm. Plaquemines and Iberia Parishes have already declared an emergency in their parishes, and other parishes are expected to declare emergencies today and tomorrow.”

The Governor added that 150 of the 700 buses on contract for an evacuation are arriving in the state today, and the state has requested federal help to assist in standing up the newly constructed shelter in Alexandria. Governor Jindal also ordered the Louisiana National Guard to be ready to deploy more than 1,500 guardsmen to New Orleans as early as tomorrow to assist in securing the city as citizens begin to evacuate their homes, should an evacuation be triggered.

Additionally, the Guard has requested possible aircraft assistance from Oklahoma (1), Colorado (4), Illinois (8), Nebraska (5), Pennsylvania (1), Ohio (1), Maryland (1), and Kentucky (5). The Louisiana Guard already has satellite equipment positioned in Terrebonne, Lafourche, Jefferson, Plaquemines, Saint Bernard, and Orleans Parishes to assist in first responder communications on the ground. Additional satellite equipment will be positioned in Southeast and Central Louisiana today.

The US Army Corps of Engineers was a part of the emergency operation center briefing today, and they reported that they are working to monitor levees and canals in coastal Louisiana. The Corps will ride out the storm in Louisiana and will then fly with the Coast Guard to assess levee conditions after the storm passes.

The Governor also announced today that the Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) is beginning to get twice-daily updates from nursing homes and hospitals to ensure they are on track to evacuate patients in need of assistance. DHH is executing their contracts today for ambulance assistance, and they will be receiving 150 additional, requested ambulances from FEMA to assist in the evacuation of patients from nursing homes and hospitals. DHH will have mandatory evacuations of hospitals and nursing homes if the storm reaches a Category 3.

The Governor added that the Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is stopping their road construction projects today, in preparation for a possible evacuation. Due to the updated projections of the storm, the Governor updated the timeline of possible state events to include the beginning of phased parish evacuations as early as Saturday.

Also on Saturday, critical needs and medical needs shelters are set to open, including the PMAC at LSU. Pet shelters would also open on Saturday and some hospital and nursing home patients would begin to be evacuated. On Sunday, contra-flow could be activated to assist in evacuation efforts. The state has requested four urban search and rescue teams from the federal government, along with a command center, and their arrival is expected this weekend. This is only a possible timeline of events to prepare citizens, and will be updated as the storm continues to move.

DSS UPDATE on Shelter Locations: People who are evacuating on their own and who do not have an alternative shelter should stop at shelter-information points along the evacuation route to get the most up-to-date information about which shelters are open.

The shelter-information points (also listed on the Louisiana evacuation guides) are located at:
· Tourist Welcome Center, U.S. 65 & 84, 1401 Carter St., Vidalia.
· Tourist Welcome Center, 836 I-20 West, Tallulah.
· Paragon Casino, 711 Paragon Place, Marksville
· Sammy’s Truck Stop, I-49, Exit 53, 3601 La. 115 West, Bunkie.
· Med Express Office, 7525 U.S. 71, Alexandria.
· LSU-Shreveport, P.E. Gym, One University Place, Shreveport.
· Pickering High School, 180 Lebleu Road, Leesville.
· Mowad Civic Center, Fifth Avenue and 10th Street, one block off U.S. 165, Oakdale.

DSS also will assist with the registration of New Orleans area evacuees who require city and/or state assistance in evacuation at the Union Pacific Terminal in New Orleans.

DHH UPDATE on Special Medical Needs Shelters: Five locations are preparing to open as Special Medical Needs Shelters, located in Baton Rouge, Alexandria, Monroe, Bossier, and Hammond. Hirsch Coliseum in Shreveport is being prepared for Critical Transportation Needs populations and for pets, should this population be asked to evacuate.

Agriculture and Forestry UPDATE on pet evacuations: A pet evacuation center for residents with critical transportation needs will be open in Shreveport in accordance with the timeline set by the local parish OEP officials. It is only for evacuees with critical transportation needs, and those residents are instructed to coordinate with their local OEP offices to arrange transportation for themselves and their pets to the shelter. Pets under 15 pounds that are carried in a pet carrier will be allowed to travel with their owners on the bus transports (soft-sided carriers are preferred). Larger pets will be placed in size-appropriate pet carriers and bussed separately from their owners to the pet/owner shelter. Other shelters for self-evacuators for pets and owners will open as storm and evacuation conditions dictate. Pets must have proper identification – preferably something permanent like a microchip or tattoo. Dogs and cats need to have proof of annual rabies and other vaccinations. It’s also very important to have collars, leashes, harnesses and kennels for confining animals when necessary. Muzzles may be appropriate for animals that are apprehensive in unfamiliar settings. Pet owners should bring at least a three-day supply of food, water and medications for their animals.

So, same federal administration as Katrina, but a different Louisiana governor this time…huh. It appears to me that Jindal came down hard on Nagin … he has been paying attention and doing what he should have done 3 years ago … Revisit the time line regarding response to Katrina by Blanco’s administration and that of the Jindal administration today. If you can sift beyond all of the finger pointing, the State and local administrations appear to have been criminally negligent at most…woefully incompetent in the least, and the MSM was as eagerly negligent in their biased coverage.

Thanks for some perspective Jolie!

I am SO sick of hearing how Bush LEFT all those people to suffer during the LAST hurricane because they were black!!

People don't seem to care about FACTS do they? OR how about when the LOCAL authorities DID start re-establishing a presence they were wasting their time by unlawfully depriving citizens of their means of self defense!!

Democrat(ic) leadership (in this case a misnomer) was to blame for almost ALL of what went down AFTER the hurricane made landfall.

I was shocked when Nagin got reelected but at least Blanco got thrown out.

I have heard LA is a corrupt state so he may have a big machine behind him. ?????

Blanco dropped out rather then run for her second term. Her biggest mistakes were that she trusted the local goverments to act on the evacuation plans that had writen down. They didn't ... they were in as much denial as their constituants. NOT just Nagin ... although he was the worst for not following his own plans and they whining and crying about the results. The flooded buses were abaobdoned because he ordered the drivers to evacuate, The pump operators were also ordered to leave, so no one was there to man the pumps when the power failed.

To make matters worse, she was bracketed by incompetance ... this time by Fema's Brown ... who was more interested in how he looked on tv press conferences then actually doing his JOB. Firefighting equipment sat in Houston while the warehouses and docks of Port Orleans burned on national TV because Brown refused to release them until the proper forms were filled out. At one point a few years ago, Brown was offfered a post in Rebuild St Bernard ... ( remember Chalmette ? ) rumor has it they were trying to lure him down there ... and he would have suffered a mysterious fishing accident.

Think Chicogl politics in the 20's but with better food. Nagin was re elected because he does have a powerful machine behind him, and his main opponent was Mitch Landriue, brother to Sentator Mary Landriue and all part of the powerful and corrupt Moriel Machine whom no one wanted back in power.
