Why wasnt this information given before?

Quote:
Rodriguez, 43, died of the perforated bowel on May 9, 2007. The report said she had been seen at the hospital at least six times in the month before her death and had spent 14 hours there a day earlier.
Another reviewer, lawyer and physician Dr. Mark Brown, noted that Rodriguez had a history of drug abuse and that hospital staff could "rationally conclude" that she was only trying to enter the hospital again to obtain "food, shelter and narcotics and was not in medical crisis."
This does make her look like she was just looking for shelter and drugs. She had already been diagnosed and sent on her way, but with her being homeless and having a drug abuse history I can see why the nurses would think the way they did. Why wouldnt they?

Of course it is horrible that she died but given the conditions and what ALL had happened, I can see how they acted the way they did.

I think the person who Triaged her is the one most in the wrong.. they are supposed to know the signs/symptoms of possible life threatening conditions.. trust me i know they can make an exception even if they don't have a bed in the ER.. if they think someone is truely in danger..we've had gurneys in the hallway when he had more criticals than we could deal with

i think you got this one confused with the psych ER at a hospital in ny city. i'm not sure if they know what killed that woman yet but she was not vomiting blood. she just killed over and lay there for 45 minutes to an hour before help arrived.

i'm sure the triage nurse knew what she was doing but the woman was just seen for this very thing the day before and was dx'd with gallstones by a MD. and before that...........she was seen 5 other times within a month's period for the same symptoms at the same er. no, it's not the nurses fault.........it's the doctor's for not getting it right to begin with.

but.......i do have to question. i wonder if the nurse actually saw the woman vomiting blood or if her family reported her symptoms appropriately. i can not fathom the nurse not responding to that no matter how many times she's been there and/or no matter if she was a drug seeker.

Yes. When its almost impossible to get medical coverage and you are forced to wait until you ARE practically dieing to get help and the government takes money away from the hospitals for "under-performing" you are left with an incredibly over-worked understaffed medical personnel who would much rather be doing something else for their measley pay. AKA people who dont much give a sh!t and you cant really blame them.

California fines 18 hospitals for shoddy care
By SHAYA TAYEFE MOHAJER, Associated Press Writer
Tue Aug 19, 1:10 PM ET

LOS ANGELES - Eighteen hospitals in California were fined for state health code violations in which patients received shoddy care that in some cases led to deaths.

Violations included an improperly inserted catheter, a ventilator that wasn't turned on and surgical tools left inside patients after operations.

The fines made public Monday stem from investigations by the California Department of Public Health.

The hospitals were fined $25,000 for each violation — the latest of dozens of penalties the state has issued in recent years to more than 40 hospitals.

"The number of penalties will decrease and the quality of care will dramatically improve as hospitals take action to improve," said Kathleen Billingsley, director of the health department's Center for Healthcare Quality. "The entire intent of these fines is to improve the overall quality of care in California."

The report detailed a death at a La Mesa hospital in which a worker failed to turn on a ventilator for a patient who was being transferred. Another patient in Los Alamitos died after falling from a wheelchair with no seat belt on, and a Santa Ana hospital lost a patient from a medication overdose.

At Doctors Medical Center in San Pablo, a registered nurse improperly inserted a catheter into a patient's neck vein on Sept. 1, and the patient died as a result of an air bubble from the tube. The report found the nurse had not completed a required anatomy class or the hospital's training on protocol.

Defending himself in the report, the unidentified male nurse told investigators, "I am the pro of the hospital. The other nurses call me to put in IVs that they cannot get in."

A message seeking comment from the medical center was not returned Monday.

In other cases, patients had surgical instruments or sponges left inside their bodies during surgery, requiring a second surgery to retrieve the items. The report also found some patients experienced surgical awareness during their procedures due to improper anesthesia.

The state has issued 61 such penalties to 42 hospitals, Billingsley said.

If they found enough cause to close the hospital then why didn't they find for her. I wonder if it would have been a different outcome if it was someone that wasn't homeless. Or a well dressed white woman. Would the outcome have been the same? If it had been my family member I would have called the tv station and when they came with their cameras I bet the outcome would have been a lot different. At least they would have had proof then. But good grief they had witnesses and it didn't make a difference at all.

NC man dies after waiting 22 hours at hospital
By WHITNEY WOODWARD, Associated Press Writer
Tue Aug 19, 11:39 PM ET

RALEIGH, N.C. - A mental patient died after workers at a North Carolina hospital left him in a chair for 22 hours without feeding him or helping him use the bathroom, said federal officials who have threatened to cut off the facility's funding.

The state sent a team Tuesday to help Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro draft new procedures to ensure patients receive proper care.

An investigator's report released Monday found that 50-year-old Steven Sabock died in April after he at one point choked on medication and had been left sitting in a chair for close to a day at the facility about 50 miles southeast of Raleigh. Surveillance video showed hospital staff watching television and playing cards just a few feet away.

It was not clear from the report exactly how Sabock died. The report states that he was in a hospital bed and later found unresponsive. A phone call placed after business hours to the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner rang unanswered Tuesday.

Federal officials have threatened to cut off funding because of Sabock's death and a report that a physician punched a patient after the teen bit the doctor.

Department of Health and Human Services spokesman Tom Lawrence said the state team also may investigate what, if any, disciplinary action should be taken following Sabock's death.

Lawrence said the Sabock incident is isolated but that officials are concerned. "It's not the kind of thing that we in our wildest dreams would expect to happen in our hospitals — in our wildest nightmares, I guess," Lawrence said.

Sabock's father, Nicholas, declined comment when reached by telephone Tuesday evening. A man who answered the phone listed for Susan Sabock, Steven's wife, hung up without commenting.

The investigation released Monday said Sabock died in April after Cherry Hospital nurses left him unattended in a chair and did not feed him or help him to the bathroom. The report said Sabock sat, unattended, in the room for four work shifts. The report also found that Sabock, formerly of Roanoke Rapids, ate nothing the day he died and had little food in the three days preceding his death. The 47-page report also said workers were supposed to be closely monitoring Sabock's condition and may have forged documents that said they had.

The state has until Aug. 23 to file a report with the Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services detailing what changes officials are making, Lawrence said.

If the center rejects the report, federal funds will be cut off beginning Sept. 1, Lawrence said.

Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Dempsey Benton said in a statement that nurses may be reassigned to provide more patient supervision. Officials are also considering better ways to manage staff resources, he said.

A patient in New York died in June after she waited in a hospital's mental ward waiting area for nearly 24 hours. Security video showed her writhing on the floor. It was nearly an hour before someone else flagged down a staff member who got help for the unresponsive woman.
