Overeacting? How about delusional parenting!

Ariz. Teen Charged With Terrorism

Apr 3, 8:57 PM (ET)

MESA, Ariz. (AP) - An eighth-grader faces a terrorism charge for confronting a girl with a knife and later being found with a backpack full of restraining devices and weapons, a prosecutor said. The 14-year-old told police he planned to hold his class hostage, Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas said Monday.

When the teen was arrested two weeks ago, county officials said he had plotted a "Columbine-like" scenario, comparing his plans to the 1999 deadly shooting massacre at Colorado's Columbine High School.

The teen also was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and kidnapping, as well as a misdemeanor count of carrying a weapon on school grounds, Thomas said Monday.

He will be tried as an adult, said Barnett Lotstein, a spokesman for Thomas.

The boy was arrested March 23. Police said they discovered weapons in his backpack, including a .25-caliber handgun loaded with a full clip of bullets and one in the chamber, plus a box of 28 rounds of ammunition, Mesa Police spokeswoman Diana Tapia said.

Police also found three large knives, a lock, a metal chain and two rolls of duct tape in the backpack, Tapia said.

A woman identifying herself as the boy's mother told a radio station that she believes her son was crying out for help and that authorities are overreacting.

"We as parents will do everything in our power to get him back in the juvenile system, so he can get the care and pay an appropriate penalty," said the woman, who identified herself as Denette Reed in an interview with KTAR-FM.

Police said they were alerted by a girl who said the boy confronted her with a knife.

Holly Hosac, another Mesa police spokeswoman, said the teen was a good student but apparently had trouble with another boy at school.

Re: Overeacting? How about delusional parenting!

it really concerns me where a child that age could get that stuff, but then again its 2007 and i thnk we would be shocked where he could get it so easily prolly.
this makes me think we should have metal detectors ,,searches at every school ! just to protect our kids. it might take extra time and money, but it would save lives and deter children like this ! its very scarey.
