Thai Man Dies While Laughing in Sleep
http://cnn.netscape.cnn.com/news/sto...&idq=/ff/story /0001%2F20030821%2F105282780.htm&sc=1104
BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - An ice-cream truck driver in Thailand died while laughing in his sleep, a newspaper reported Thursday.
Damnoen Saen-um, 52, laughed for about two minutes on Wednesday and then stopped breathing, The Nation said, quoting officials.
The newspaper said Damnoen's wife tried to wake him up but he kept laughing. An autopsy suggested that he might have had a heart attack, The Nation quoted a doctor as saying.
``I have never seen a case like this. But it is possible that a person could have heart seizure while laughing or crying too hard in their sleep,'' said Dr. Somchai Chakrabhand, deputy director-general of the Mental Health Department, according to The Nation.
The incident occurred in Phrae province, 300 miles north of Bangkok.

SIGN HERE: Charles Weinstein's signature is quite legible, but thanks to
years of practice he can sign it upside down. And that's been his
"official" signature for years, he says. But when the 45-year-old
Glasgow, Del., man went in to get a new driver's license, the clerk
wouldn't let him sign his usual way. "Stop fooling around and sign it
right," he says the clerk at the Division of Motor Vehicles told him,
calling his signature "unacceptable". When he said that was his legal
signature, the clerk called him a "troublemaker" and threw him out.
Worse: the clerk kept his old license -- which also had his upside-down
signature. "They don't want to open a Pandora's Box and give everyone
the right to change their signature," said state Department of
Transportation spokesman Michael Williams, adding Weinstein's signature
was "not the way 588,000 other signatures are done." But after
publicity, the DMV reversed its decision and allowed Weinstein's
signature. (Wilmington News Journal) ...Of course, they will still
accept an "X" for a signature -- as long as it's not upside down.

KNOCK-KNOCK: Police in New Castle County, Del., say Jonathan Rodriguez,
17, Joseph Denham, 18, and Daniel Cote, 19, planned a home-invasion
robbery. But things went wrong when Rodriguez knocked on the house's
front door -- with the butt of a handgun. The gun went off, shooting
him in the groin. He was arrested at the hospital where he went for
treatment, along with Denham, who apparently drove him there. Cote was
arrested separately. "This is one you'll hear about in the bizarro
files about one of the world's dumbest criminals," said county police
spokesman Trinidad Navarro. (Wilmington News Journal) ...Your wish is
my command.

BY ANY OTHER NAME: Police in Elkhart, Ind., responded to a burglar alarm
at a laundry and found the door kicked in. Officers were outside when a
man came out carrying a gumball machine. When he saw the cops he
dropped the machine and ran, but was caught. Nimrod Morgan, 24, was
charged with burglary. (Elkhart Truth) ...His parents were also
arrested on charges of "giving a child a name likely to cause criminal
behavior".

CHEERS! Bars and restaurants in Florida are coping with a new law that
makes smoking in the establishments illegal. Larry Wald, the owner of
the Cathode Ray Club in Ft. Lauderdale, has introduced the "nicotini"
for smokers who don't want to go outside for a nicotine hit. He soaks
tobacco leaves in vodka and mixes the results with other liquors for a
...um... refreshing pick-me-up that he has served more than 300 times
in the first month of the new law. "It tastes like a cross between
vodka and chewing tobacco," said one customer, adding "That's not
necessarily a bad thing." (South Florida Sun-Sentinel) ...For a
preview, pour your drink into an ashtray and swill.

Not the Sharpest Knife in the Drawer
California Lt. Gov. Cruz "The Snooze" Bustamante (D) told voters...in the
most Mondalesque manner he could summon...that he was gonna raise taxes some
$8 billion if Gray Davis (D) is recalled - which is as close to a sure thing
as Hillary Clinton blaming George Bush for...well, anything bad that happens
anywhere at any time. As one Washington scribe put it this week, "Davis isn
't just toast, he's burnt toast." This same journalist describes Bustamante
's intellectual capacity by saying, "If you walked through his deepest
thoughts, you wouldn't get your ankles wet."

The Other Arnold
"Schwarzenegger supporters who happen to visit www.votearnoldforgovernor.com
might be surprised to find that it features a different Arnold than
expected. The site promotes Arnold Drummond from the 1980s TV show 'Diff'
rent Strokes.' Yes, the other prominent Arnold vying for the governor's
seat, should the California recall election press on, is former child star
Gary Coleman."

Your Tax Dollars Hard At Work
"According to the San Francisco Department of Public Health, the city's AIDS
Health Project received $985,572 from the federal government this year to
provide AIDS programs, including this Friday's federally funded 'Hot &
Healthy Summer Sex Workshop,' with the goal of 'getting what we want.'"

Bring Back Literacy Tests
"A fair (literacy) test (for voting) that did not invidiously discriminate
against anyone would be a fine proposition. In fact, I could propose a good
test right here. Every aspiring voter should be asked to write out the
Pledge of Allegiance. Punctuation would not count, and each applicant would
be permitted up to 10 spelling mistakes. I'm trying to calibrate the test to
the standards of the average government-run high school. Should applicants
object to expressing any support for the country in which they aspire to
vote, they could be given the alternative test of spelling conscientious
objector - but they've got to get that 100 percent right."

Robbers staged party in victim's home
A gang of robbers who raided a house in Argentina threw a party in front of their victims.
The three men ate a meal and danced to the radio before driving off in their car.
One of them donned sunglasses and performed a version of Michael Jackson's moon walk, reports Clarin online.
Householder Marta Bugani told police the men demanded money and, when told there was none in the house, stole a TV, video camera, clothes and pots and pans.
She said they ate a meal they prepared from fridge in the home, in La Plata, which they washed down with bottles of beer.
She said: "They were very calm. They said they wouldn't hurt us and when my son told them I had high blood pressure they kept asking me if I was ok."

US man charged over drink-driving on lawnmower
A Wisconsin man has been charged with drink-driving on his lawnmower.
Barry Davis, from West Bend, appeared in court on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
Davis admitted to drinking a six-pack of beer but said he didn't know driving a lawnmower while intoxicated was illegal.
A criminal complaint said a police officer pulled Davis over after seeing the mower swerving and watching it nearly go into a ditch to avoid traffic.
Washington County Assistant District Attorney Peter Cannon said state statute defines a motor vehicle as any vehicle that is self-propelled.
Davis spent a night in Washington County Jail and was then released on bail. He's scheduled to return to court on September 3 for further proceedings.
