hite House Admits (Third Time) President Obama Fibbed On Sequester
    4 March 2013

Is the press corps getting some balls (to put it crudely but graphically)? Are they finally prepared to challenge the President’s untruthful assertions on facts that are crucial to understanding policy?

None other than NBC’s David Gregory today pressed Obama’s chief economic advisor, Gene Sperling, whether his boss told the truth in the third presidential debate that “the sequester is not something that I’ve proposed. It is something that Congress has proposed.” Sperling finally wilted under the pressure of tough questioning to admit that “yes, in fact, the sequestration was President Obama’s plan.”

Sperling actually admitted nothing new as I chronicled in my With the Sequester, President Obama Argues With President Obama. http://www.forbes.com/sites/paulrode...esident-obama/ Jack Lew, in his confirmation hearings, conceded on February 13 that the sequester originated in the White House. On Tuesday February 19, press spokesman Jay Carney admitted “The sequester was something that was discussed… and as has been reported, it was an idea that the White House put forward.”

Of course, these clear admissions that Obama parented the sequester are being furiously spun (The Republicans made him do it), but the words are not subject to misinterpretation. So it is true. Obama is fighting against his own program, while blaming his opponents! It can’t be clearer than that.

Despite this conclusive evidence that Obama himself proposed the sequester, the media sat on its hands as the President falsely excoriated the Republicans for originating and insisting on the sequester. They stood by as the President ludicrously accused the Republicans of deliberately inflicting harm on sick children so that their filthy rich supporters could have their corporate jets. The press spread the myth that the President was above the fray and was working hard to save ordinary Americans from his vicious foes.

Why does President Obama take such risks with the truth, knowing he could be outed at any time? There is more to this than counting on an adoring press to protect him. Rather, he takes risks with the truth to protect and promote his most basic narratives on which an entire policy is based.

Obama’s Republican-sequester-blame narrative holds the key to the public blaming the Republicans for any adverse consequences of the sequester. If there are none, then he must fabricate some (such as illegal aliens being freed from jails or capital janitors being fired). He cannot rail against his own policy; therefore he must deny that he had anything to do with it. The Republican-sequester-blame narrative holds the key to regaining the House in 2014. Not stating things truthfully is a small price to pay for the big prize.

Obama cannot afford any serious challenge to his core narratives. Obama had to destroy Bob Woodward’s credibility not because he wrote that the President “moved the goal posts,” but because he identified with precision the President’s fingerprints and footprints on the sequester proposal. If Obama put forward the sequester, his narrative collapses along with hopes of regaining the House. And, by the way, other reporters will see that if he can destroy a media icon, just think what he could do with them?

The White House handling of Benghazi followed the same pattern. His “I killed Osama and Al Qaeda is on the run” constituted his foreign-policy re-election narrative. Even though he and his key advisors clearly knew by September 12 at the latest that this was a pre-planned terrorist attack, Obama continued to peddle the “disgusting video” narrative for more than a week. The risks were high that someone would back him into a corner, but the stakes were too high to do otherwise. After all, he could pick soft interviews, like David Letterman. No one will really call him on what is clearly a bunch of bull.

The sequester untruth is about winning back the House. The “disgusting video” untruth was about keeping the presidency.

President Obama cannot juggle all these untruths in the air at once. His blame-the-Republicans narrative is crumbling. He is holding the thirty survivors of the Benghazi attack out of reach of the press, but a stubborn Congress or an enterprising Breitbart reporter may break through the wall. Non-partisan organization like the Congressional Budget Office and the Government Accountability Office publish their tables and appendices in excel so that skeptics can check claims of $4 billion in debt reduction and that Obama Care does not add to the deficit.

If the media realizes that they can be savaged like Bob Woodward, their cheerleading for Obama may stop and we may get more objective evaluations of the President’s veracity. I wonder if Bob Woodward crossed David Gregory’s mind today?

J-Nap: Sequester already causing airport delays
    By Doug Powers • March 4, 2013 12:47 PM

Remember last week before the sequester hit how getting through check-in and security at O’Hare and LAX was a delay-free breeze? Me neither, but from now on any airport delays will be blamed on sequestration the way any kind of weather events are blamed on global warming: http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories...03-04-08-39-18

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says U.S. airports, including Los Angeles International and O’Hare International in Chicago, are already experiencing delays as a result of automatic federal spending cuts.

Both of those big-city airports routinely suffer delays.

Napolitano said Monday that delays will become worse. The Transportation Security Administration and Customs and Border Protection agencies, which are part of the Homeland Security Department, are sending furlough notices and have cut overtime for employees.
Napolitano didn’t say if the delays are a direct result of sequestration lowering staff levels at airports, or if the thousands of illegal immigrant detainees ICE released all had planes to catch all at the same time. http://twitchy.com/2013/03/01/surpri...lly-thousands/

Director of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano is warning of unprecedented sequester-induced airport delays not unlike the one pictured above before sequestration

Via Drudge, J-Nap might want to check the flight delay map before saying airports are “already experiencing delays.” http://www.fly.faa.gov/flyfaa/usmap.jsp

You might have noticed that the AP reporter who wrote the above story dutifully avoided the term “sequester” in favor of “automatic federal spending cuts.” http://washingtonexaminer.com/now-th...rticle/2522987

Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING that goes wrong for the next 4 years will be blamed on sequester. That has been their plan all along. This truly is the most transparent administraiton ever! They are transparently evil. The Conservatives can see them for exactly what they are. Also, “the bees know”.

    ...

and tomorrow we will get a possible pounding of snow, will she blame those delays on the sequestor too?

    ..

Hey Janet, maybe you can get a loan from Kerry – he seems to have money to spend:
” U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry promised Sunday to give Egypt $190 million to help the government pay its bills”
There is the proof you freaking Oaf, now explain to us all what this money could have done to alleviate the so called ”Slow Downs”

    ..

The gov has resorted to blackmail to collect protection money! It is "the Chicago Way"

    ..

Sounds like this is union propaganda–from NATCA and PASS. The controllers abhor the idea of furloughs–they think that’s just for the rest of the federal employees, not them. They’re making their case about “sequester” to get their union members waived.

    ..

This is the same stooge that had no idea how 2000 illegals were released, but now she is positive that the cuts are the cause of the delays…..

    ..

BUT, the sequester, uh, I mean the “automatic federal spending cuts” may or may not be the reason that all of the aircraft carriers are In Port at Norfolk at the same time. Good thing to check on, though.

$253.5 B : Obama Borrowed Nearly 6x as Much in February as Sequester Cuts All Year
    Posted on March 5, 2013

(CNSNews.com) - During the month of February--as President Barack Obama was warning Americans they would see dramatic effects in their lives if “sequestration” of some planned federal spending kicked in--the federal government’s debt climbed by $253.5 billion.

That one-month increase in the debt was nearly six times as much as the $44 billion in spending cuts the Congressional Budget Office estimates will take place in all of fiscal 2013 as a result of sequestration.

At the close of business on Jan. 31, 2013, the federal debt was $16,433,791,850,294.04, according to the U.S. Treasury. Bottomline: In February alone, the government borrowed nearly 6 times as much as it intends to save with the sequester over the rest of the fiscal year. At the close of business on Feb. 28, 2013, the federal debt was $16,687,289,180,215.37. Thus, the federal debt increased $253,497,329,921.33 during the month.

In its Budget and Economic Outlook for Fiscal Years 2013-2023, published in February, the CBO explained that only $44 billion in planned federal spending will be cut during this fiscal year as a result of sequestration. http://www.cbo.gov/sites/default/fil...getOutlook.pdf

The CBO also says additional cuts that will be “attributable” to fiscal 2013 will actually take place “in later years”—not in fiscal 2013.

“By CBO’s estimate, budgetary resources for defense (other than spending for military personnel) will be cut by around 8 percent across the board, and nondefense funding that is subject to the automatic reductions will be cut by between 5 percent and 6 percent,” said CBO. According to that estimate, discretionary outlays will drop by $35 billion and mandatory spending will be reduced by $9 billion this year as a direct result of those procedures; additional reductions in outlays attributable to the cuts in 2013 funding will occur in later years.”

The combined $35 billion in discretionary cuts and $9 billion in mandatory cuts—or $44 billion--that will actually take place this year equal approximately one-sixth of the new debt the federal government accumulated in February.

Bottomline: In February alone, the government borrowed nearly 6 times as much as it intends to save with the sequester over the rest of the fiscal year.

White House: WE MUST CANCEL ALL TOURS BECAUSE OF SEQUESTRATION!!!!!!
    (Also, We’re Hiring! Apply Within!)
Filed under: General — Patterico @ 6:27 pm

The White House suddenly canceled tours of . . . the White House — blaming (you guessed it) sequestration:

Sorry, Washington-bound spring-breakers. Your White House tours have been canceled.

The Obama administration announced Tuesday that it will cancel all tours starting this weekend, due to sequester cuts. The move prompted swift condemnation from Republican lawmakers, who described the decision as the latest attempt to make the sequester seem worse than it is. “It’s politically motivated,” Rep. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., told Fox News. “It seems childish — take my ball and go home.”
Are Republicans right? Here’s one hint, from the Washington Times: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/...#ixzz2MiqbgSEj

The sequester cuts are now officially in place, but many government agencies appear to be hiring freely anyway.

The U.S. Forest Service on Monday posted help-wanted ads for a few good men and women to work as “recreation aides” this summer, the Internal Revenue Service advertised for an office secretary in Maryland, the U.S. Mint wanted 24 people to help press coins, and the Agriculture Department said it needs three “insect production workers” to help grow bollworms in Phoenix.

Monday marked the first regular workday under sequestration, and federal agencies posted more than 400 job ads by 6 p.m.
There are children who will have a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the White House who will be denied that opportunity so Barack Obama can score some cheap political points, in his quest to do Absolutely Nothing about our budget problems other than continually call for more and more and more taxes on the “rich.”

The dishonesty and smug lack of caring is no less infuriating for having become commonplace

    http://patterico.com/2013/03/05/whit...-apply-within/

    .........

Obama administration tells feds to make sure the sequester hurts as much as advertised
    By Doug Powers • March 5, 2013 03:28 PM

A shorter way to phrase the message being sent to federal agencies is “whatever you do, don’t make liars out of us”: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/...nful-promised/

The Obama administration denied an appeal for flexibility in lessening the sequester’s effects, with an email this week appearing to show officials in Washington that because they already had promised the cuts would be devastating, they now have to follow through on that.

In the email sent Monday by Charles Brown, an official with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service office in Raleigh, N.C., Mr. Brown asked “if there was any latitude” in how to spread the sequester cuts across the region to lessen the impacts on fish inspections.

He said he was discouraged by officials in Washington, who gave him this reply: “We have gone on record with a notification to Congress and whoever else that ‘APHIS would eliminate assistance to producers in 24 states in managing wildlife damage to the aquaculture industry, unless they provide funding to cover the costs.’ So it is our opinion that however you manage that reduction, you need to make sure you are not contradicting what we said the impact would be.”
They break promises all the time and this is the one they want to keep?

I’m thinking of a slight alteration to the script for The Longest Yard — one where at halftime Paul Crewe writes a letter to his teammates telling them “don’t try too hard in the second half because it would contradict a promise I just made to the warden.”

    Obama’s Sequester
    JD @ 10:44 am

Obama proposed it (after torpedoing an agreement for 800B in revenues, suddenly demanding 50% more)
    Obama signed it into law
Obama vowed it would never happen
Obama then vowed to veto changes to it
    Obama then refused to negotiate
Obama spent the last 2 weeks campaigning against it with his dishonest parade of horribles
Obama then again opposed a bill that would have given him more flexibility to implement
The Senate never passed a bill to avert
The House passed at least 2 bills to avert
Obama signed the directive to implement

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FrAF...layer_embedded

Oh, and those peaceful illegal immigrants that Napolitano started releasing last week? Just the beginning. Which gives lie to the idea that this was done without the knowledge and approval of her and the White House

President Obama loves to rail against the 'rich'. He has become a master of manipulation in using class warfare to divide the American people. Today, his fear mongering surrounding the sequester continued with the announcement that tours of the White House, which are conducted by volunteers and attended by every day Americans, will end. Congressman Tom Graves (R-GA) asked a great question. Will Obama's celebrity friends like Jay-Z and Beyonce continue to get personal tours? Something tells me the answer to that question is YES! LIKE if you agree!

Congressman: Will Jay-Z and Beyoncé still get White House tours?

    4:45 PM 03/05/2013

WASHINGTON — On Tuesday, Georgia Rep. Tom Graves accused President Barack Obama of “playing on the emotions and fears of the American people” after it was announced that White House tours are being canceled because of the automatic budget cuts that went into effect last week.

“Rather than do his job and agree to take responsible measures to get our government’s finances in order, President Obama continues playing on the emotions and fears of the American people,” Graves said. “Canceling all self-guided White House tours is the latest shameless political stunt by the president, who is twisting basic government efficiency into an extreme consequence,” he added.

The $85 billion in across-the-board budget cuts that went into effect March 1 is known as the sequester.

In his statement, Graves went on to ask whether the White House would still be closed to Hollywood stars and big donors. “As the White House doors are slammed in the face of the average American, I want to know if they will still swing wide open for Hollywood and the liberal elite,” Graves said. “Will Jay-Z and Beyoncé still get to stop by for a tour, or will they be denied like those who aren’t rich and famous?”

“Will someone who donates half a million dollars to Organizing for Action get a tour, or will they be denied just like someone from Summerville, Georgia, who might drive ten hours for a self-guided tour? The American people deserve to know if this also spells the end for wild, 2:00 a.m. parties at the White House with celebrities like Katy Perry and Swizz Beatz,” he added.

The White House announced on Tuesday that, “Due to staffing reductions resulting from sequestration, we regret to inform you that White House Tours will be canceled effective Saturday, March 9, 2013 until further notice. Unfortunately, we will not be able to reschedule affected tours.”

Meanwhile, Graves offered some southern hospitality to anyone who can’t go on a White House tour. “I’m pleased to report that my staff will remain intact, and yes, we will still be happy to provide a tour of the Capitol and a Coke for any constituent.”
