The news has been heavily marinating in the media, so I’m sure you’ve seen it: the U.S. Senate voted down all four of the gun control measures they were asked to vote on.

The coverage has been predictable: Why won’t Congress do anything? Damn the NRA obstructing reasonable restrictions! Damn the Republicans for refusing to support legislation most of the country supports!

These criticisms mirror President Obama’s desperate plea earlier this year, when he asked: “What if Congress did something — anything — to protect our kids from gun violence?” But next time you hear a liberal berate Republicans and the NRA for obstructing reasonable gun control legislation, ask them this:

Why did the Democrats vote against gun control bills too?

That’s right – the media aren’t rushing to mention that facet of the story (try to find it clearly stated in this New York Times piece), but two of the four gun control bills were actually sponsored by Republicans and torpedoed down by Democrats.

One bill, sponsored by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA), would have strengthened the national background check system, encouraging states to send more updated information to the FBI. Almost every Republican supported it; nearly every Democrat voted against it and it failed to pass the 60-vote threshold, 53-47.

Another bill, sponsored by Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), would have given the attorney general the power to potentially block someone on the terrorist watch list from buying a gun. Even the NRA supported this bill. Almost every Republican supported it; nearly every Democrat voted against it and it again failed to pass the 60-vote threshold, 53-47.

So here we have two Republican-backed gun control bills which, while not perfect, do “something.” But Democrats nearly unanimously voted them both down.

Why would that be? Here’s the real motivation behind all of the Democrats’ rhetoric, and why I have a hard time taking their gun control stance seriously: http://www.politico.com/story/2016/0...n-votes-224560

Democrats made it clear they want to make it as painful for Republicans to oppose their gun amendments, whether through a flood of advocacy calls to their Senate offices or at the ballot box in November.

“Some of this is going to turn into an electoral operation,” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), who led the Senate Democrats’ nearly 15-hour gun filibuster last week, said an interview Monday.
Either the evil NRA has gotten its hands into the Democrats’ pockets, or the Democratic Party is more concerned about scoring political points and cheap theatrics then actually solving the problem they like to campaign on.

“Sadly, our efforts are blocked by the Republican Congress, who take their marching orders from the National Rifle Association,” Senator Harry Reid said after the votes.

But who are the Democrats taking their marching orders from, Harry?

Democrats want Congress to do “something,” unless that something gets in the way of winning in November. How’s that for sincerity?

200 Musicians Sign ‘Billboard’s Open Letter to Congress For Gun Control
    [I]June 23, 2016

Billy Joel, John Mellencamp and nearly 200 other musicians and industry executives joined music publisher Billboard in signing an open letter to Congress this week calling for increased gun control measures in the wake of the Orlando terrorist attack in early June.

In a statement on its website, Billboard‘s editors explained its decision to feature the artists and the letter on the cover of this month’s issue.

    The publication’s editors wrote: http://www.billboard.com/open-letter/

Like the rest of the country and the world, Billboard editors were horrified by the mass killing at Orlando’s Pulse nightclub on June 12, and by the murder of singer Christina Grimmie the night before. Both tragedies occurred where musicians and music fans gathered. And so faced with another gun-related tragedy, the staff organized this special “Open Letter to Congress” cover of Billboard.
The letter calls for “a background check on every gun sale.” Missing from this call, however, is any acknowledgement that the Pulse nightclub gunman, Omar Mateen, passed a background check for his rifle and handgun. Kevin Loibl — the man suspected of killing The Voice star Christina Grimmie just one day before the Orlando attack — passed a background check for both of his guns.

Next Time A Democrat Demands Congress Do ‘Something’ On Gun Control, Ask Them This

26 Dems Who Participated in House Sit-In for Gun Control Own Guns

    John S. Roberts
    10:54am June 25, 2016

    You can’t fix stupid.

    From Fox News Insider:

After congressional Democrats ended their day-long sit-in on the House floor in a push for a vote on two pieces of gun control legislation, it has emerged that 26 of those Democratic lawmakers are gun owners themselves.
Here’s the list of gun-owning Dems who participated in the sit-in…
    Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick

    Rep. Bennie Thompson

    Rep. Dina Titus

    Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger

    Rep. Jared Huffman

    Rep. Jim Cooper

    Rep. Jim Costa

    Rep. John Carney

    Rep. John Garamendi

    Rep. Keith Ellison

    Rep. Mike Thompson

    Rep. Peter DeFazio

    Rep. Peter Welch

    Rep. Rick Nolan

    Rep. Ron Kind

    Rep. Steve Cohen

    Rep. Tim Ryan

    Sen. Gary Peters

    Sen. Harry Reid

    Sen. Mark Warner

    Sen. Martin Heinrich

    Sen. Patrick Leahy

    Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse

    Sen. Tammy Baldwin

    Sen. Tim Kaine

    Sen. Tom Carper
    Classic.

The two pieces of legislation included: one for extended background checks, one for restricting gun sales to terror suspects.

What’s more is that 12 other Dems who participated in the sit-in did not answer if they owned a gun or not.

Matt Lauer Implores: ‘People Across This Country’ Want ‘Real Change’ on Gun Control

    By Kyle Drennen | June 23, 2016 | 5:02 PM EDT

After celebrating House Democrats’ overnight publicity stunt to push gun control, on Thursday’s NBC Today, co-host Matt Lauer pleaded with Congress to take action: “If you look at the polls...people across this country say they want more than a moment of silence after a mass shooting, they want some real change.”

He fretted that the sit-in protest by liberal lawmakers would not be enough to force through the anti-gun agenda: “But does this bring about anything other than a little discussion on a morning show for one day?” MSNBC legal analyst Ari Melber replied: “I think it's a great question and I think the real truth is we don't know the answer yet.”

Melber proceeded to highlight the perspectives from both sides of the aisle:

We heard from some members of Congress last night, comparing this, as John Lewis did, to the civil rights struggle and how many big moments there were before you changed public opinion and government conduct. Again, though, Republicans saying, “Look, you didn't win enough seats to get these votes. You don't control the House. You want to control what the votes are held on? Win an election and you'll control the House.” So we heard both sides of that, but this was certainly an unusual late night on the Hill.
Earlier in the exchange, fellow co-host Savannah Guthrie urged Republicans to cave: “What's the strategy here? For Republicans, if they're [Democrats] going to fail, why not just give them a vote and say, ‘Well, you had your vote and you didn't have enough support’?” Melber rightly explained: “...as remarkable as it was, breaking House rules, streaming viral overnight, you don't want, as the Speaker of the House in either party, to set a precedent where you give in to protests and hand over control of the calendar, which is one of the Speaker's unitary most important prerogatives.”

Here is a full transcript of the June 23 segment:

    7:05 AM ET

MATT LAUER: Let’s bring in MSNBC’s Ari Melber. Ari, good morning to you.

    ARI MELBER: Good morning.

[ON-SCREEN HEADLINE: Gun Control Legislation a Reality? Dems Hold Sit-In on House Floor in Protest]

LAUER: It’s a cliff hanger, you know? The Republicans wanted to shut down the House and head home for a holiday break. The Democrats want nothing to do with this. Can you compare this to anything?

MELBER: This is truly unprecedented. There was wrangling over a committee hearing about 13 years ago, where Capitol Police were called, but nothing like this. When we see civil disobedience or sit-ins, we usually think of citizens against the government not government officials against each other.

SAVANNAH GUTHRIE: It is interesting, too, because the two measures that the Democrats want to vote on are measures that were voted on in the Senate and failed. What's the strategy here? For Republicans, if they're going to fail, why not just give them a vote and say, “Well, you had your vote and you didn't have enough support”?

MELBER: Two reasons. Number one, Republicans don't want to put up necessarily a tough vote for their members if they don't have to. And number two, once this began, as remarkable as it was, breaking House rules, streaming viral overnight, you don't want, as the Speaker of the House in either party, to set a precedent where you give in to protests and hand over control of the calendar, which is one of the Speaker's unitary most important prerogatives.

LAUER: If you look at the polls, Ari, people across this country say they want more than a moment of silence after a mass shooting, they want some real change. But does this bring about anything other than a little discussion on a morning show for one day?

MELBER: I think it's a great question and I think the real truth is we don't know the answer yet.

LAUER: Alright, Ari Melber. Ari, thank you very much. Good to see you.

Sen. Carlson, I rarely use the term, but you are one dumb bitch. People with guns that are likely to commit crime are not going to register the guns. You need not worry about them because you are of a protected class. People who would register their guns are not likely to commit crimes. Again, you are safe. The third group would also not register their guns. And this is the group to which I belong by the way. We are law abiding members of the community, many ex military, who believe in the constitution. One of the reasons we own guns is to protect the nation from a tyrannical government, a government that would try to rob us of the rights granted by the document your oath of office has obligated you to uphold and defend. We, you do need to fear. We will not allow you to strip the citizenry of our rights ordained by God and explained in the bill of rights. I used the term explained specifically because government does not grant these rights and therefore can not withhold these rights. Consider your situation carefully. Should you anger this third group, you may find yourself on the wrong end of a revolution.

    ..

Poor Mary Ann, the democrat base here elected her because she was a democrat, then she opened her mouth up and got voted out the next election. First off dimwit, you can't arrest anyone without due cause. Second, registered gun owners probibly would not be the ones commuting the crimes. WADF.

In case of Alabama 'stoners' Cam Robinson, Hootie Jones, 'goofy' Monroe DA creates 'blatant perversion of justice'
Louisiana DA drops drug, gun charges; refuses to 'ruin' Alabama football players Cam Robinson, Laurence Jones' lives

    James Gill ~ July 2, 2016

    Hootie Jones

    Cam Robinson

The press has moved on from that goofy district attorney who refused to file charges against two stoners found with guns in their car. Cam Robinson and Hootie Jones were deemed worthy of a pass because they play for the Crimson Tide.

This blatant perversion of justice got so many laughs that nobody seems to have noticed quite how serious it was. This was not, as some reports suggested, just a couple of kids given a break over a run-of-the-mill offense. Possessing drugs and a weapon at the same time means a mandatory five years in prison under Louisiana law. Robinson and Jones probably don’t know how lucky they are.

Robinson and Jones are from Monroe, where the local district attorney, Jerry Jones, achieved fleeting national attention a few weeks ago by announcing he was letting them off the hook because they had been sweating at football practice while the rest of us were taking it easy in the A/C. Jones presumably figured the voters of Ouachita Parish would agree with that reasoning, although it is possible that roofers or farm workers, say, did not find it persuasive.

It left Robinson and Hootie Jones to face the wrath of coach Nick Saban. Only a cynic would doubt that character is a prime consideration for college football coaches and that they always will take appropriate disciplinary measures.

Except, perhaps, if that would hurt their chance of winning. Saban’s wrath may not be enough to keep Robinson and Hootie Jones off the field for the season opener against USC.

Hootie Jones is merely a backup safety and may not have merited leniency on his own account, but Robinson is one of the best offensive linemen in the country. He is so good that LSU was crushed when losing the battle to recruit him. If Jerry Jones were a true LSU supporter, he might not have been so keen to let the two players off the hook.

Robinson and Hootie Jones were arrested in May after a cop noticed a strong smell of marijuana coming from their parked car. Hootie Jones was in the passenger seat with a gun in his lap. Robinson was in the driver’s seat with a bag of weed on the floorboard. Under his seat was a gun reported stolen in Alabama.

Jerry Jones did not just cite perspiration as grounds for refusing charges but suggested he had insufficient evidence. That was a tough one, for sure, but a determined prosecutor could probably have discerned some violation amid the guns and dope.

Possession of a stolen firearm carries a mandatory year in prison, even if no drugs are present.

But if they are, possession of any gun is illegal and means five years.

The law that so decrees was challenged when voters amended the constitution to make gun ownership a fundamental right, but the state Supreme Court upheld it in 2014.

The court did so in the case of a man found with a blunt and a legally purchased gun in his car. By possessing drugs, the defendant was found to have “qualified his right to engage in what would otherwise be the exercise of that fundamental right.”

Had Robinson and Hootie Jones encountered a less sympathetic district attorney, the USC game would not have been on their agenda, for sure.

Now, on Saban’s orders, they are being advised on the perils of drugs and taking a gun-safety course. By the time the season gets underway, perhaps they will be declared rehabilitated, and Robinson’s prospects in the NFL draft will still be rosy.

Jerry Jones, in announcing his decision not to prosecute, said, “I refuse to ruin the lives of two young men who have spent their adolescence and their teenage years working and sweating.”

But those efforts were richly rewarded with football scholarships to Alabama, which should have provided an incentive to keep out of trouble. The goofy district attorney may have faded from the headlines, but Robinson and Hootie Jones can look back and reflect how close they came to ruining their own lives.

Idiot Liberal Makes Grossest Anti-Gun Argument Of ALL TIME

    V. Saxena reports that the number of Americans with a concealed carry permit and weapon by their side has reached a record all-time high of 14.5 million, thanks in part to President Barack Obama’s never-ending anti-gun campaign.

In a paper published by economist John Lott of the Crime Prevention Research Center, it was revealed that the number of Americans with a concealed carry permit rose by “1.73 million this year alone, breaking the previous record of 1.69 million last year,” according to Townhall.

his means that nearly two million additional Americans have obtained a weapon and are now walking safely around their respective towns with it attached to their hip. Excellent!

This coincides with the equally relevant statistic showing that overly 100 million firearms have been sold since Obama took office in 2009:

The rapid increase in concealed carry permits is mirrored by a rapid increase in gun sales. The National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) checks soared from 11.2 to 23.1 million between 2007 and 2015. Sales in 2016 have grown at an even faster pace.
The harder Obama and other liberals try to dissuade Americans from purchasing weapons, the more firearms the American people inevitably wind up buying. Gotta love it!

urthermore, according to Lott, the acquisition of concealed carry permits and weapons has increased most noticeably among women and minorities, who feel compelled more-so than ever before to put their lives into their own hands.

But the news gets even better. In 11 states, concealed carry permits are no longer required for Americans to keep a firearm by their side. This means that the number of Americans who are now carrying a weapon with them while out and about on the town could be and likely is much higher than 14.5 million.

All in all, it looks as if the good guys are winning for a change, as more and more Americans are beginning to take advantage of their constitutionally guaranteed right to arm themselves against danger. Thanks, Obama!
