Obama to oppose Senate bill’s border enforcement requirements in immigration speech today
posted at 10:31 am on January 29, 2013 by Allahpundit

I use the term “border enforcement requirements” loosely, of course. http://hotair.com/archives/2013/01/2...t-for-the-gop/

I’m sticking with what I wrote yesterday, http://hotair.com/archives/2013/01/2...igration-bill/ that Obama’s insistence on giving a big left-wing speech about immigration is really just a way to make the Senate bill look “moderate” by comparison. He has to walk a fine line in praising the bill to keep skittish Democrats on board while criticizing the enforcement parts so that skittish Republicans can sell it to their supporters as being “too conservative for Obama.” I think that’s what he’s up to today in Vegas, but you never know with The One. The urge to fatally polarize this issue by attacking Republicans in front of a microphone might simply be too great. A friend in politics e-mailed last night with the subject line “HAHAHAHAHA” linking to this piece, http://www.politico.com/politico44/2...ll-155469.html which describes how Obama “does not favor linking legal status to border security,” i.e. that he wants to get work on citizenship for illegals ASAP. My friend’s take: “Obama either wants a bill to fail so that he can continue clubbing Republicans as intransigent, or he can’t help himself effing up the process.” C’mon. Could O really be so stupid as to refuse the GOP’s insane offer to add millions more Democratic voters to the rolls via a path to citizenship? We’re about to find out, my friends.

Needless to say, after his snotty digs at Republicans in his inaugural, tone will be key: http://www.washingtonpost.com/politi...5ee_print.html

“We see the Senate principles as a centrist set of principles, but we expect the administration to be more detailed to the left,” said Frank Sharry, executive director of America’s Voice, a leading immigration advocacy group. “I don’t think it’ll be an immigration advocate’s dream, but it will be a solid left-of-center proposal.”…

Immigration advocates said they expect Obama to be forceful in his public remarks Tuesday and offer details that go beyond the blueprint on the White House Web site. But there are risks for the president, who has accused Republicans of opposing his initiatives to avoid giving him political credit.

If Obama’s speech in Las Vegas, in a state with a growing number of Hispanic voters, is too tri*umphant or too hectoring, he could risk alienating Republicans whose support will be necessary, some lawmakers have said. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) warned Obama against delivering a “divisive, partisan speech.”

Matt Lewis makes a good point too about the timing: http://dailycaller.com/2013/01/29/obama-to-the-rescue/

While some might view Obama’s insertion into the debate as a “poison pill,” my guess is it will benefit Rubio by allowing him to attack Obama — and simultaneously push the senate’s more prudent framework. One possibility is that this could help highlight the conservative principles Rubio has been fighting to include in the deal.

And it couldn’t come at a better time. Rubio is going on Rush Limbaugh today to talk about his plan. Now — thanks to Obama — Rubio will likely spend most of his time talking about the differences between Obama’s amnesty plan and Rubio’s alternate plan (where border security and other conditions must be met prior to citizenship).
Again: Is that O’s whole strategy here, to let Republicans use him as a punching bag in order to make it easier to sell the big legalization effort to skeptical conservatives? Or is he actually trying to sabotage the bill so that he can go on kicking Republicans as obstructionist? One point in favor of the latter theory is that yesterday’s joint presser with McCain, Schumer, Rubio et al. to announce the Senate bill wasn’t originally scheduled for Monday. As of last weekend, per WaPo, they were planning to announce their agreement “as early as next Friday,” February 1. Why’d they move it up to Monday? Because, according to Politico, The One was evidently prepared to bigfoot the entire effort by giving his immigration speech today whether or not the McCain gang had announced anything of its own yet. Which is insane: If O had gone first on this, it would have been branded the “Obama immigration push” and the McCain gang’s proposals would have been dismissed as an afterthought or as a mere derivative of O’s plan. And yet the White House was prepared to risk that. Keep looking that gift horse in the mouth, champ.

President Obama has missed the legally-mandated deadline to submit his budget to Congress for the fourth time in five years. Maybe he should stay in DC to ensure a budget gets done and provide a blueprint for spending control, instead of flying off to MN for another campaign event on gun control. In case he missed it, he won. Quit campaigning and actually do some work!.

Like make another executive order? No thanks.

I'm not sure which is worse, when he works or not. When he works, we get screwed, when he doesn't, we get screwed.

    “Political Class, Take Note”
By drillanwr, on February 5, 2013, at 1:07 pm

Our friend Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit http://pjmedia.com/instapundit/ has, once again, written an excellent column. This time Reynolds is seeing "A revolution in the works" in the divided United States.. http://www.usatoday.com/story/opinio...olumn/1887593/

But if there's an upside to the increasing unhappiness that most Americans feel toward the political class, it's that maybe it means people are paying closer attention.

Americans are out of sorts, and increasingly they're unhappy with the government. According to a Pew poll released last week, more than half of Americans view government as a threat to their freedom. http://www.people-press.org/2013/01/...rsonal-rights/

And it's not just Republicans unhappy with Obama, or gun owners afraid that the government will take their guns: 38% of Democrats, and 45% of non-gun owners, see the government as a threat. http://www.rasmussenreports.com/publ...nt_of_governed

Add this to another recent poll in which only 22% of likely voters feel America's government has the "consent of the governed," and you've got a pretty depressing picture -- and a recipe for potential trouble. Governments operate, to a degree, by force, but ultimately they depend on legitimacy. A government that a majority views as a threat, and that only a small minority sees as enjoying the consent of the governed, is a government with legitimacy problems.

    [...]

There are two possible ways to address this problem. One is to elect people that everyone trusts. The problem with that is that there aren't any politicians that everyone trusts -- and, alas, if there were, the odds are good that such trust would turn out to be misplaced.

The other option is to place less power within the political sphere. The less power the government has, the less incentive for corruption, and the less that can go wrong when the government misbehaves. The problem with this approach is that the political class likes a powerful government -- it's one of the reasons that the Washington, DC, area, where much of the political class lives, is beginning to resemble the Capital City in The Hunger Games, prospering while the rest of the country suffers.

The political class usually gets its way, because it thinks about politics -- and its own position -- every waking moment, while the rest of America thinks about these things only in fits and starts, in between living everyday life. But if there's an upside to the increasing unhappiness that most Americans feel toward the political class, it's that maybe it means people are paying closer attention.

I love Glenn's reference to The Hunger Games. I had the same thoughts, and others, after finally viewing the movie.

So let me get this straight... under this administration:
They want to give Eqypt and Syria tanks and fighter jets
but take away guns from US citizens?
Give "illegal immigrants" free medical care
while charging American families $20,000 ?
Cut Social Security and Medicare from US Seniors
while providing it for free to people who never paid into the system ?
Protest "warrantless wiretapping" when Bush did it
while expanding the same program themselves ?
Rant and rave about "waterboarding "terrorists
while claiming it is "ethical" and "wise" to target US citizens
with lethal drone attacks with no evidence, no trial - just a suspicion of "imminent danger"
Set up a system of "entitlements" which will account for 53% of ALL Federal Spending by 2023 with no means to fund said payments except "tax the rich" ... while the politicians have excluded themselves from the laws that they have passed.

Have we fallen into the Rabbit Hole ??

    Humble Obama

Sometimes I wonder if Obama is simply self-unaware. Or if his speech writers moonlight for The Onion.

At the National Prayer Breakfast, Obama told us … http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2...er=rss&emc=rss

President Obama delivered a contemplative call for humility, driven by faith and abiding respect for those who disagree, at a national prayer gathering Thursday morning in Washington.

Amid fierce political debates often marked by partisan rigidity, the president used the National Prayer Breakfast to call for a more humble approach.

“While God may reveal his plan to us in portions, the expanse of his plan is for God and God alone to understand,” Mr. Obama said.

Americans’ task as citizens, Mr. Obama said, “is to spend our days with open hearts and open minds, to seek out the truth that exists in an opposing view, and find the common ground that exist for us to take meaningful action.”

Referring briefly to debates over taxes and debt “less pronounced” than those faced by Lincoln and King, Mr. Obama said, “We must keep that same humility that Dr. King and Lincoln and Washington and all our great leaders understood is at the core of true leadership.”

Mr. Obama’s speech to the bipartisan gathering of political and community leaders at the Washington Hilton was less overtly political than it was last year, toward the beginning of his re-election campaign, when he tied Jesus’s teachings to his call for higher taxes on the wealthy. But in the past – Thursday’s speech was his fifth appearance as president at the breakfast – he has used the gathering more as an opportunity to discuss his faith.

The rarity of such a cordial gathering of members of different parties was noted by the other public officials who spoke. Mr. Obama added, “I do worry sometimes that as soon as we leave the prayer breakfast, everything we’ve been talking about at the prayer breakfast seems to be forgotten.”

He said, “We’d like to think the shelf life wasn’t so short. I go back to the Oval Office and start watching cable news networks, and it’s like we didn’t pray.”
Teh One that will make the oceans stop rising, and heal the planet, is calling for humility.

Teh One, that as a matter of practice, misrepresents his opponents’ views, and attributes bad motives to them is bemoaning this practice.

Even more ironic is the last paragraph, where he bemoans the nature of the rhetoric after people leave the prayer breakfast. Teh One went from the prayer breakfast to a Dem policy conference, where presumably they talked about bipartisanship, finding common ground, attributing pure motives to your opponent, and not demagoguing issues.

Obama’s speech followed Dr Benjamin Carson, who was surprisingly critical of the current Administration’s imperious nature, taxes, healthcare …. watch it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFb6N...layer_embedded

Millions Improperly Claimed U.S. Phone Subsidies
    February 11, 2013, 9:51 p.m. ET.
    ~ By SPENCER E. ANTE

The U.S. government spent about $2.2 billion last year to provide phones to low-income Americans, but a Wall Street Journal review of the program shows that a large number of those who received the phones haven't proved they are eligible to receive them. The Lifeline program—begun in 1984 to ensure that poor people aren't cut off from jobs, families and emergency services—is funded by charges that appear on the monthly bills of every landline and wireless-phone customer. Payouts under the program have shot up from $819 million in 2008, as more wireless carriers have persuaded regulators to let them offer the service.

Suspecting that many of the new subscribers were ineligible, the Federal Communications Commission tightened the rules last year and required carriers to verify that existing subscribers were eligible. The agency estimated 15% of users would be weeded out, but far more were dropped. A review of five top recipients of Lifeline support conducted by the FCC for the Journal showed that 41% of their more than six million subscribers either couldn't demonstrate their eligibility or didn't respond to requests for certification.

The carriers—AT&T T +1.08%Inc.; Telrite Corp.; Tag Mobile USA; Verizon Communications VZ +0.29%Inc.; and the Virgin Mobile USA unit of Sprint Nextel S +1.90%Corp.—accounted for 34% of total Lifeline subscribers last May. Two of the other largest providers, TracFone Wireless Inc. and Nexus Communications Inc., asked the FCC to keep their counts confidential. Results for the full program weren't available.

The program is open to people who meet federal poverty guidelines or are on food stamps, Medicaid or other assistance programs, and only one Lifeline subscriber is allowed per household. The program, which is administered by the nonprofit Universal Service Administrative Co., has grown rapidly as wireless carriers persuaded regulators to let people use the program for cellphone service. It pays carriers $9.25 a customer per month toward free or discounted wireless service.

Americans pay an average of $2.50 a month per household to fund a number of subsidized communications programs, including Lifeline.

For the carriers, the program is a chance for them to sign up more subscribers and make a small profit, plus more money if customers go over their small initial allotment and need to buy more minutes or text messages. Carriers can set prices for their Lifeline subscribers as the companies wish.

Until last year, FCC rules didn't require carriers to certify to the FCC that subscribers were eligible. Consumers could self-certify, and in many states documentation wasn't required.

Carriers said many of the disqualified subscribers simply didn't reply when asked to prove their eligibility. They also said the FCC rules on self-certification, and the absence of a national database of participants, made it hard to keep ineligible people from signing up.

The FCC said it is investigating allegations that some Lifeline providers violated the rules, though it declined to comment on that probe. Carriers that don't properly confirm eligibility can be fined up to $150,000 for each violation for each day of a continuing violation, up to a maximum of $1.5 million. In egregious cases, a carrier could lose its ability to participate in the program.

Telrite said it confirms Lifeline eligibility but said it had been difficult to verify the one-phone-per-household rule.

A Verizon spokesman said the "vast majority" of the subscribers removed from its rolls didn't respond to eligibility checks. While Sprint found that some of its subscribers were no longer eligible, it, too, found that many others didn't respond, a person familiar with the carrier's operations said.

AT&T hadn't detected the ineligible subscribers because customers self-certified under old rules and because some states required the company to provide Lifeline service to people enrolled in certain state assistance programs, according to a person familiar with the company's thinking.

Tag Mobile didn't respond to requests for comment.

TracFone Chief Executive F.J. Pollak declined to say how many customers his company shed. Nexus Communications didn't respond to a request for comment.

Two years ago General Communication Inc. GNCMA -1.22%paid more than $1.5 million to settle allegations that Alaska DigiTel LLC, an Alaskan company it owns, submitted false claims to the FCC for more than four years. General Communication said the alleged misuse occurred before the company took day-to-day control of Alaska DigiTel.

Lifeline users have been a source of subscriber growth in the otherwise saturated U.S. market and helped fuel the expansion of companies like TracFone, now the fifth-largest U.S. wireless carrier.

The FCC until last year allowed consumers to self-certify, without requiring documentation, that they met federal poverty guidelines. Subscribers didn't have to recertify once they were enrolled in the program, and there were few checks on whether households signed up for more than one cellphone.

"The program rules we inherited were designed for the age of the rotary phone and failed to protect the program from abuse," FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said.

The agency pushed through new rules last year, requiring documentation when a Lifeline customer signs up. Consumers also must certify that no one else in their households is using the program. Carriers now have to check a state or federal social-service database to confirm eligibility and must reverify eligibility every year.

Carriers were required by Jan. 31 to report the number of subscribers they had removed from Lifeline as of the end of last year. The data reviewed by The Wall Street Journal came from those reports.

The FCC said new verification procedures saved nearly $214 million last year, and projected total savings over the next three years would reach $2 billion. Disbursements under the program began to drop in the third quarter after 12 consecutive quarters of increases.

7 Things Democrats Would Have Freaked Out About If Bush Had Done Them
Obama's national security policy has continued some of the most controversial moves of the Bush administration. Silence from much of the left.
posted on February 11, 2013 at 1:44pm EST

Democrats were overjoyed when George W. Bush left office in January of 2009.

Obama had promised to end Bush's hawkish foreign policy and the "war on terror's" detention and interrogation regime.

But in the beginning of his fifth year as president, Obama's record has been surprisingly similar to his predecessor's in those areas.

    1. Democrats fought George W. Bush’s troop surge in Iraq in 2006.

Obama copied it in Afghanistan in 2009.

You would think Democrats would react the same way they did to Bush's surge policy:

But they were really more like:

    2. American deaths in Afghanistan have skyrocketed since Obama took office.

Actually, the death tolls in Afghanistan under each administration look like this:

So you would think Democrats would react like this:

But they are much more like this.

    3. President Obama's drones and special operators are working down "kill lists" of suspected terrorists.

Obama even put Anwar al-Awlaki — an American citizen — on such a list.

Al-Awlaki was killed under secret authorization from the justice department in 2011.

If Bush did this, the Democrats would be all like:

But now they are more like:

    4. Drone attacks have risen sharply under Obama.

In 2011, a teenage American citizen, Abdulrahman al-Awlaki, was taken out in a drone strike without a trial.

If Bush did this, Democrats would literally hyperventilate.

But with Obama they are more like:

    5. In Pakistan alone, the administration has launched more than 300 drone strikes.

Pakistani civilian casualties due to these strikes are as high as 800 according to international estimates.

So the Democrats should be like:

But they are a lot more like:

    6. Obama promised to end the Bush-era torture interrogation practices.

But last year the U.N. released three damning reports detailing torture in Afghan facilities under Obama's security watch.

When Bush did this, Democrats were like:

    Now:

    7. Obama was unable to deliver on his pledge to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center, which Bush had also said he would close.

When Bush did this, Democrats were all like:

    And...

    And...

But now they are much more like:

"We may not be so different, you and I."
