Obama Campaign Sues to Restrict Military Voting

by Mike Flynn2 Aug 2012, 11:48 AM PDT

President Barack Obama, along with many Democrats, likes to say that, while they may disagree with the GOP on many issues related to national security, they absolutely share their admiration and dedication to members of our armed forces. Obama, in particular, enjoys being seen visiting troops and having photos taken with members of our military. So, why is his campaign and the Democrat party suing to restrict their ability to vote in the upcoming election?

On July 17th, the Obama for America Campaign, the Democratic National Committee, and the Ohio Democratic Party filed suit in OH to strike down part of that state's law governing voting by members of the military. Their suit said that part of the law is "arbitrary" with "no discernible rational basis."

Currently, Ohio allows the public to vote early in-person up until the Friday before the election. Members of the military are given three extra days to do so. While the Democrats may see this as "arbitrary" and having "no discernible rational basis," I think it is entirely reasonable given the demands on servicemen and women's time and their obligations to their sworn duty.

The National Defense Committee reports: http://www.nationaldefensecommittee.org/

f]or each of the last three years, the Department of Defense’s Federal Voting Assistance Program has reported to the President and the Congress that the number one reason for military voter disenfranchisement is inadequate time to successfully vote.
I think it's unconscionable that we as a nation wouldn't make it as easy as possible for members of the military to vote. They arguably have more right to vote than the rest of us, since it is their service and sacrifice that ensures we have the right to vote in the first place.

If anyone proposes legislation to combat voter fraud, Democrats will loudly scream that the proposal could "disenfranchise" some voter, somewhere. We must ensure, they argue, that voting is easy and accessible to every single voter. Every voter, that is, except the men and women of our military.

Make no mistake, the Democrat lawsuit is intended to disenfranchise some unknown number of military voters. The judge should reject it with prejudice.

Romney Camp Calls Obama Campaign’s Military Voting Lawsuit “Despicable” and “Offensive”
    August, 5, 2012 — nicedeb

A lawsuit filed by Obama for America, the Democratic National Committee and the Ohio Democratic Party against Ohio’s Secretary of State John Husted and Attorney General Mike DeWine seeks to overturn a law that allows members of the military to vote during the three days prior to the election. According to the complaint, the law is unconstitutional and arbitrary and unfair because ordinary Ohioans can’t vote along with the military during those three days.

Last week, Congressman Allen West responded to the extraordinary action by saying that ‘Barack Obama Is Undeserving of the Title Commander-in-Chief’. http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/...ef_649282.html

“As a retired Army officer I am appalled at the Obama administration’s actions to bring a lawsuit against the State of Ohio for the early voting privileges it extends to our Men and Women serving in uniform,” West writes. “To have the Commander in Chief make our US Servicemen and Women the target of a political attack to benefit his reelection actions is reprehensible. The voting privilege extended to these Warriors who represent the best among us should not be a part of the collective vision of this inept President who is more concerned about his reelection than sequestration. As a Combat Veteran, for this President to unleash his campaign cronies against our Military is unconscionable….how dare this President compare the service, sacrifice, and commitment of those who Guard our liberties not as special and seek to compare them to everyone else. Barack Obama is undeserving of the title Commander-in-Chief.”

The Romney Campaign response via Tony Lee, Big Government: http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Governm...-and-Offensive
On Sunday, Mitt Romney’s campaign called Obama campaign’s actions “despicable” and “offensive.”

“We disagree with the basic premise that it is ‘arbitrary’ and unconstitutional to give three extra days of in-person early voting to military voters and their families, and believe it is a dangerous and offensive argument for President Obama and the DNC to make,” Romney’s General Council Katie Biber said in a statement. “It is not only constitutional, but commendable that the Ohio legislature granted military voters and their families this accommodation.

Biber noted that “respected military groups intervened in the Obama campaign’s lawsuit” and argued “it is absolutely constitutional to give military voters special flexibility in voting, and that it is offensive for the Commander-in-Chief’s political campaign to argue otherwise.”

Maggie Thurber of Ohio Watchdog has a list of the 15 military groups that have filed a motion to intervene in a voting lawsuit. http://watchdog.org/46658/oh-militar...oting-lawsuit/

In their motion to interview, the military groups state, “The Obama campaign’s and Democratic National Committee’s argument that it is arbitrary and unconstitutional to afford special consideration, flexibility, and accommodations to military voters to make it easier for them to vote in person is not only offensive, but flatly wrong as a matter of law.”

The motion asks the court to deny the request for a temporary injunction which, if granted, would prevent military voters from casting ballots during the three-day time period.

Captain Pete Hegseth of Concerned Veterans for America appeared on Fox and Friends to argue the case from the pro military standpoint. http://concernedveteransforamerica.org/about-us/

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkyXE...layer_embedded

Axelrod defended the Obama campaign’s move on Fox News Sunday, using the same tortured logic as Biden, who said in his ridiculed tweet: “Ohioans shouldn’t have to endure shameful attempts to restrict their voting rights.”

Ax had his lines well rehearsed and ready to go:

“What that lawsuit calls for is not to deprive the military of the right to vote on the final weekend of the campaign — of course they should have that right. What that suit is about is whether the rest of Ohio should have the same right.”

“And I think it’s shameful that Gov. Romney would hide behind our servicemen and women to try and win a lawsuit to try and deprive other Ohioans of their right to vote,” he added.

These people really know how to mangle the language. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=9XVF8ZfPlG8

s pretty obvious that this is just another sleazy political play by the Obama administration to shore up votes. They are leaving no rocks unturned in their desperation to stack the deck in every way possible against Romney in a country they now know is recoiling away from them. It’s “despicable and offensive”, alright – not to mention shameful.

See this Big Government’s report for the Democrats’ disgraceful history of disenfranchising military voters. http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Governm...the-First-Time

Is it any wonder that pro-military PACs keep popping up to defeat Obama? http://soforamerica.org/

The MIA MSM on 2000 KIAs and The AWOL Pentagon on Military Absentee-Ballot Requests
By drillanwr, on October 1, 2012, at 12:08 am

As we hit the 2000 mark of troops killed in Afghanistan, http://news.yahoo.com/us-military-de...131020733.html amid the deafening silence of the MSM http://babalublog.com/2012/09/obamas...bloody-secret/ two more of our troops are murdered in green-on-blue attacks by Afghan soldiers. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories...09-30-05-14-29

And our military overseas are being purged from voting in November's election... http://mvpproject.org/in-the-news/va...-awol-in-2012/

FREDERICKSBURG — A 92 percent drop in absentee-ballot requests by military personnel in Virginia is raising concerns that the Pentagon is failing to carry out a federal voting law.

With only 1,746 military voters in Virginia requesting absentee ballots so far this year — out of 126,251 service members in the state —the Military Voter Protection Project says the system has broken down.

And it’s not just in the Old Dominion. MVPP Executive Director Eric Eversole reports significant declines in absentee-ballot requests by service members across the nation.

Compiling data from Virginia, Florida, North Carolina, Illinois, Ohio, Alaska, Colorado and Nevada, Eversole’s organization found that military families have requested 55,510 absentee ballots so far this year. That’s a sharp decline from the 166,252 sought in those states in 2008.

You would think Obama would want to let the military vote since he's taking credit for bringing them home from afghanistan. He'll restrict them but didn't do anything to stop all the fraudulent voting during his first canpaign.

They want to protect the voting rights of illegals, illiterates, zombies, and "phantoms" ... but block the military who defend our freedoms ... yeah ... nothing to see here...

Churches using 'souls to polls' to rally vote
By CURT ANDERSON | Associated Press – 16 mins ago.

MIAMI (AP) — It's not just the collection plate that's getting passed around this fall at hundreds of mainly African-American and Latino churches in presidential battleground states and across the nation. Exhorting congregations to register to vote, church leaders are distributing registration cards in the middle of services, and many are pledging caravans of "souls to the polls" to deliver the vote.

The stepped-up effort in many states is a response by activists worried that new election rules, from tougher photo identification requirements to fewer days of early voting, are unfairly targeting minority voters — specifically, African-Americans who tend to vote heavily for Democrats. Some leaders compare their registration and get-out-the-vote efforts to the racial struggle that led to the 1965 Voting Rights Act. "In light of all this, we are saying just let our people vote," said the Rev. Dawn Riley Duval, social justice minister at the Shorter Community A.M.E. Church in Denver. "The people are being oppressed by these measures. It has ignited a sense of urgency and collective power that we can take by engaging in the process."

In key swing states such as Florida and Ohio, proponents of the new election rules deny they are aimed at suppressing the minority vote in hopes of helping Republicans win more races. Reasons for their enactment vary between rooting out fraud and purging ineligible voters to streamlining the voting process. But to some African-American leaders like the Rev. F.E. Perry, a Cleveland-based bishop in Ohio's Church of God in Christ, it's as if the 1960s barriers to black civil rights have returned all over again. "We've come too far to sit idly by and watch that happen," Perry said. "We want to get souls to the polls. Whatever it takes to get them there, that's what we're going to do."

With national public opinion surveys showing a close race between President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney, even a few votes either way in a state such as Florida — a mere 537 votes decided the 2000 contest between Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Al Gore — could prove decisive. In 2008, Obama won 95 percent of black voters and is likely to get an overwhelming majority again. He also won among Latinos, a rapidly growing constituency that also tilts heavily toward the Democrat in polls this year.

But any loss of votes would sting.

To be sure, not all clergy are encouraging their flocks to turn out on Election Day: Some black pastors are telling their congregations to stay home, seeing no good presidential choice between a Mormon candidate and one who supports gay marriage. The pastors say their congregants are asking how a true Christian could back same-sex marriage, as Obama did in May. As for Romney, the first Mormon nominee from a major party, some congregants are questioning the theology of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its former ban on men of African descent in the priesthood.

Those pastors, however, are in the minority.

Many Democrats see a pattern of partisanship in many of the new election laws, which they contend are intended to hinder minority turnout and boost the prospects of GOP candidates. "I pray it's not politics, but I don't know. It doesn't look like anything other than politics," said the Rev. Richard Dunn, pastor at Faith Community Baptist Church in Miami.

One organization, the faith-based PICO National Network, staged a "Let My People Vote Sunday" in September in which about 300 churches around the country held voter registration drives during services and recruited churchgoers to go out and register even more people. The goal was to sign up around 75,000 people, PICO policy director Gordon Whitman said. "People are stopping in the middle of worship to have people pull out the registration forms and fill them out. It's about the church saying, 'We are going to participate in this process,'" Whitman said.

In many states with early voting, the Sunday before Election Day in 2008 was a church-based political event in which minority congregations went en masse to polling places and cast their ballots. That year in Florida, 33.2 percent of all African-American voters and 23.6 percent of Latino voters cast ballots on that final Sunday, according to the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University.

In Ohio in 2008, Whitman said about 100,000 people voted during the last weekend before the election. A new Ohio law would have cut off early voting on the Friday before the election, but a federal judge declared it unconstitutional because some groups such as military personnel were exempted. The state is appealing that ruling.

This year in Florida, a new election law eliminated early voting on that last Sunday, although there is a Sunday for early voting about a week and a half earlier. Dunn, the Miami pastor, said he expects most churches will shift to that earlier day, which falls on Oct. 28 this year. "Sunday in the African-American tradition is one of the biggest days historically in our community," he said. "You have large numbers of people who go to church. Pastors aren't saying who to vote for, but they are saying, 'This is souls to the polls day.'"

Florida's law was also challenged in federal court, but a judge ruled in September there wasn't enough proof that the change would harm African-Americans' right to vote. The judge also noted that, unlike the previous law, the new rules required at least one Sunday for early voting.

Meanwhile, from the pulpit, some churches are even using a litany that calls upon congregations to remember the fight to obtain the vote as well as other civil rights. One such script distributed by PICO (it stands for People Improving Communities by Organizing) mentions the Rev. Martin Luther King, the bloody march in Selma, Ala., and many other civil rights milestones. "We remember thousands of little towns where countless, unnamed ancestors stood in their dignity to cast a ballot," the script says. "In 2012 we will not be silent or denied the right to vote. For we have come too far by faith."

    http://news.yahoo.com/churches-using...070754760.html

"Some leaders compare their registration and get-out-the-vote efforts to the racial struggle that led to the 1965 Voting Rights Act."
Congressional Republicans voted FOR the 1965 Voting Rights Act in a higher percentage than the Congressional Democrats. The same for the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Remember, Robert Byrd was a KKK organizer, and Al Gore's father voted against both of these Acts. Also, it was the Democrat Party that supported and wanted slavery to continue, and the Republican Party that fought to end it. It was the Democrat Party that created Jim Crow laws and Democrats who organized the KKK. Look it up; and wise up. Democrats just found another way to enslave the blacks - it's called welfare. Democrats will do anything to get the blacks to continue to do their bidding.

Half-In, Half-Out: The Modern State of Military Policy

Posted on October 10, 2012 by Greg Campbell

War is hell. That is what I am told. I have never served in the military, but I have the utmost respect for those that have or do. Because war is hell, if a war must exist, I favor a war that lasts exactly how long it takes to meet the objective and not a minute longer. For that reason, I have advocated from 2003 onward the “Sherman’s March” style of warfare- get over there, kick some… butt, and get home. It’s over-simplified, I know; but it’s the gist. I don’t spend unnecessary time at the dentist’s office, and soldiers should spend as little time as possible in a warzone. Win and then get home. But our modern military is dragging their feet, endangering our troops and advocating a contemptible style of “fighting.” America needs to get serious about war- after all, it is a very serious thing.

I have been called every name in the book. I have been called “insensitive,” I have been called a “hawk.” I am neither. I believe someone should never raise their fists unless they’re prepared to fight to win. One should never draw his gun unless he’s in mortal danger and he is prepared to shoot to kill in defense of himself or someone else. America should carefully consider going to war, but when they do, they should give it all they have, and do their absolute best to bring as many soldiers home alive while still achieving the objective. I am not a hawk; a hawk pushes for war. I am for careful consideration beforehand, and absolute, stunning commitment once engaged.

Too often, I am hearing trickled-down stories of soldiers being court-martialed for insensitivity to the enemy. I am hearing of too-harsh of tactics being used, and soldiers being reprimanded. Lieutenant Colonel Allen West now endures criticism from a snot-nosed punk running against him in Florida because West, having obtained information of an assassination plot against him and his men, interrogated an Iraqi police officer by firing a gun next to his head. This episode is now used against him in his Congressional race by a spoiled brat who knows nothing of honor. I am proud of Lieutenant Colonel West and his actions. It should be noted that he must have done something right; he made it home, and is now a Congressman.

As I discussed yesterday, the Obama Administration purposefully leaks information to brag to the world of our military accomplishments, but gets our elite troops killed by voicing such classified information. Our soldiers deserve better. http://dustinstockton.com/2012/10/ne...merican-lives/

In 2010, it was reported that the military was considering issuing medals for “courageous acts of restraint.” The idea was that soldiers should be awarded medals for refraining from endangering civilian lives. While I, too, hope to minimize civilian casualties, I detest any policy that second-guesses our soldiers’ decisions and undermines their ability to do all that they can to protect themselves and their comrades. http://www.navytimes.com/news/2010/0...dal_051110mar/

“The idea is consistent with our approach,” explained Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Tadd Sholtis. “Our young men and women display remarkable courage every day, including situations where they refrain from using lethal force, even at risk to themselves, in order to prevent possible harm to civilians. In some situations our forces face in Afghanistan, that restraint is an act of discipline and courage not much different than those seen in combat actions.”
Wanton carnage wrought upon civilians should never be the goal, but soldiers should worry about soldiers and such a medal would be an unwelcomed distraction from that principle. Ultimately, the idea was scrapped; but having it considered was nonetheless, ridiculous.

If that’s not enough to demonstrate our government’s lack of commitment to our soldiers on an individual level, then let’s explore the case of Lance Corporal Greg Buckley Jr. Buckley was deployed to a violent outpost in Southern Afghanistan where he and his fellow Marines were constantly at odds with the Afghan soldiers they were training. After weeks of being told how despised him and his countrymen were by an Afghan soldier, Buckley confronted the Afghan soldier regarding his disrespect and was actually forced to apologize to the Afghan soldier. Buckley, knowing that an “insider attack” was imminent, called his family and told them that he was sure he would be killed soon, and that he would not be coming home. Sadly, Buckley was right, as just two days before he was scheduled to leave Afghanistan, he was gunned down by an Afghan soldier, for whom Buckley and his fellow Marines continually risked their lives to train.

Finally, according to recent reports, U.S. soldiers and British Royal Marines have been asked to stand down and not shoot Taliban soldiers who are seen pacing IEDs at night because - get this - the gunfire might wake up and upset the locals, and we must appease them. There is nothing wrong with not arbitrarily ticking off the local population, but that concern has to come as a distant secondary concern when compared to the safety of military personnel!
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...UP-locals.html

The military gives our soldiers guns and Kevlar, but seems all-too-content with tying one hand behind their back. It has to stop. The aforementioned examples are but a drop in the bucket of outrageous policies and acts of appeasement that have occurred. I do not pretend to be an authority on military policy, nor do I posture as someone that can honestly relate to the difficulties a soldier faces. However, it seems apparent that the “modern, friendly-face” of the U.S. military is being crafted at the expense of our soldiers, and that I cannot stomach.

I often like to offer solutions where I can. In this instance, I urge readers to thank service members for their sacrifices. I also suggest checking out Wounded Wear- an organization that raises the national awareness of the sacrifice of wounded warriors, their families, and the families of fallen service members. Supporting Wounded Wear will not make these problems go away, but this is an organization in which I believe, and I encourage people to donate if they’re looking to get involved.
