Occupy Wall Street Fund Distribution Causes Strain Among Protesters
By SUSANNA KIM | ABC News – Mon, Oct 24, 2011
(ABC News) -- As the Occupy Wall Street movement expands, protest organizers are struggling with distributing the $500,000 in donations they have received and quelling disgruntled protesters.
Pete Dutro, a member of the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) finance committee, dismissed reports that squabbling was growing among the ranks regarding fund distribution. "Finances are always a flash point for a lot of organizations," Dutro, 36, said.
The New York Post reported groups of protesters were upset for having to fill out paperwork to access funds, such as money to reimburse drums that had been vandalized one late night. "There are people who don't want to follow the process and there's not a whole lot I can do for them," Dutro said. "How is that going to be accountable?"
About 8,000 individual donors have given on average about $50 each, Dutro said. Earlier this month, the Occupy Wall Street account was temporarily frozen due to a human error, losing $144,000 in online donations. Occupy Wall Street had raised about $500,000 and as of Monday have $416,000 according to the bank balance sheet, Dutro said. He said the majority of expenses are food, and next are clothing, medical expenses and credit card fees from processing the online donations. The protests, which originally began on Sept. 17, have spread across the country, with people camped out in San Francisco and Chicago, among other cities. There were over 130 arrests related to Occupy Chicago early Sunday, according to the Associated Press.
A number of celebrities have made appearances in the protests downtown in New York City, including filmmaker Michael Moore, actress Susan Sarandon, and Russell Simmons, the co-founder of hip-hop recording label, Def Jam. The protesters have organized themselves into "working groups" such as the "comfort working group," which is responsible for meeting basic needs of the group, like underwear. That group also solicits money from donors on the street.
Dutro said finance committee, comprised of six "core" members, distributes $100 a day to over 30 "working groups" by keeping a tally on receipts and on what the money is spent. For requests over $100, people must submit a request to be approved by the "general assembly," which Dutro said is usaully approved and dispersed by the next day.
Bryan Smith, who is a member of the Comfort Working Group in charge of basic neccessities for the protesters, such as thermal underwear, expressed his frustrations with the protests' financial management to the New York Post. "The other day, I took in $2,000. I kept $650 for my group, and gave the rest to Finance," he told the Post. "Then I went to them with a request -- so many people need things, and they should not be going without basic comfort items -- and I was told to fill out paperwork. Paperwork! Are they the government now?"
Dutro said it's been "hectic" recently as "things have been moving so fast," but he is trying to maintain accountability with the group's finances. "There are people who have recently become involved in the past few days and they think they know everything and OWS and are entitled to the funds but don't want to be part of the process," he said.
The finance committee is comprised of six "core" members and others who play supporting roles. "The problem with a lot of these movements is things get nebulous, meaning, who's who and who's doing what," he said. "The core people are committed to staying and there are other people who work support roles. The people who handle money are core people."
Dutro is a former tattoo artist from Brooklyn, said he used to work for a software development company. He said he now works the equivalent of two full-time jobs at the protests.

This sounds more like they are building their own little "country" but it's not turning out much different than our current system. People donate money (like we pay taxes) and a small group (the 1%) controls that money to be doled out to the majority (99%) at the discretion of the leaders (gov't).
...
Anti-wall street and anti-bank organization take credit card donations.... hmmmm
...
I really laugh at the irony of it all. Once these groups, revolutions, protests get big they find that all the issues they were fighting and protesting about is found within their own ranks...Imagine that.
..
Who is going to pay the taxes on this money. They are not listed as a non-profitable organization. Make them pay like the corporation they are protesting. They made the money - now they can pay the taxes.
...
this is a perfect example of a liberal/socialist run society if they completely had it their way! its chaotic, filthy, no leadership, unorganized, theft, leaking money left and right, and distribution of wealth whether you contributed anything or not!
...
The anti capitalist protestors are arguing over money? How is this not funny as hell.
...
Why isn't OWS protesting at the white house? Obama's new senior campaign adviser is a longtime Wall Street lobbyist. Obama's adviser, Broderick Johnson, has an extensive history of lobbying for big banks and corporations.
So much for OWS's credibility.Laissez les bon temps rouler! At this point, leave them to their stinky selves and let them implode. To stop them now, would only encourage them and others. Let their drama play out.....they are only starting to show their true colors.

I was behind the protestors early on. Then a few days ago, I heard a few speak about how they wanted stuff. It reminded me of an SNL skit with Chris Farly and the one who played Jan Brady, about how they wanted stuff too. When you want nice things, or stuff, you paln, save and get it. You work hard and take on 2nd and 3rd jobs. They sounded like a bunch of whiners.

Michael Moore Repeatedly Refuses to Admit He is in the '1 Percent'

Well then if some cyber thief gets into his bank accounts and wall street accounts and transfers everything out, then he will not even be calling the police because he's not rich and therefore would actually be losing nothing. The 50 million here's allegedly worth is just a lie created by the "right".
....
Michael Moore like most of the looney left is a hypocrite. He says he is anti-gun, but yet he owns guns, he says he's not in the 1% but we all know that he is. Like most of his ilk, he is always right, he knows what's best for the rest of us, he says that he hates Capitalism, but instead of moving to a country that doesn't have Capitalism he lives here under Capitalism as he can make bunches of money and still keep a bunch of it. Michael Moore is to be pitied as he is another unhappy liberal who has a great deal of money, still wants more money, but wants to tell the rest of us that we can't have it.. ..

Irony Alert : Troubling: #OWS kitchen staff no longer wants to share the wealth #OccupyCLT
I’m literally laughing out loud. Thanks, NY Post (hat tip): http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/m...hpa8MSYIL9xSDL
The Occupy Wall Street volunteer kitchen staff launched a “counter” revolution yesterday — because they’re angry about working 18-hour days to provide food for “professional homeless” people and ex-cons masquerading as protesters.
For three days beginning tomorrow, the cooks will serve only brown rice and other spartan grub instead of the usual menu of organic chicken and vegetables, spaghetti bolognese, and roasted beet and sheep’s-milk-cheese salad.
They will also provide directions to local soup kitchens for the vagrants, criminals and other freeloaders who have been descending on Zuccotti Park in increasing numbers every day.
Continuing:
The Assembly officially approved the three-day menu crackdown announced earlier in the day — insisting everybody would be fed something during that period.
Some protesters threatened that the high-end meals could be cut off completely if the vagrants and criminals don’t disperse. Unhappiness with their unwelcome guests was apparent throughout the day. “We need to limit the amount of food we’re putting out” to curb the influx of derelicts, said Rafael Moreno, a kitchen volunteer.
A security volunteer added that the cooks felt “overworked and underappreciated.”
Many of those being fed “are professional homeless people. They know what they’re doing,” said the guard at the food-storage area.
Today, a limited menu of sandwiches, chips and some hot food will be doled out — so legitimate protesters will have a day to make arrangements for more upscale weekend meals. Protesters got their first taste of the revolt within the revolt yesterday when the kitchen staff served only peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and chips after their staff meeting.
Organizers took other steps to police the squatters, who they said were lured in from other parks with the promise of free meals. A team of 10 security volunteers moved in to the trouble-prone southwest section of Zuccotti Park in a show of force to confront them. “We’re not going to let some members of this community destroy the whole movement,” a volunteer said.
Some arguments broke out as the security team searched tents — but no violence erupted.
Oh, I so hope a majority of Americans are paying attention to what’s happening at the Ground Zero of Occupy movements at Occupy Wall Street. What a bunch of absolute flaming hypocrites these people are.
Meanwhile at Occupy Charlotte, “Occupiers” are pushing for the community to donate gloves, coats, and other winter items so they can prepare themselves and their tents for the long winter haul. I made sure to note once again last night on Twitter that it was absolutely shameless for these *voluntarily* “homeless” people who really aren’t “needy” to be pleading for the type of assistance that the truly homeless and poor desperately need in this city, especially at this time of year around the holidays. It’s almost like the Occupy movements (Charlotte is far from the only one doing this) are saying to the actual needy: Hey, we know you guys normally need food/water/clothing more than we do, but our “needs” are more important and immediate right now … because we’re doing this FOR YOU.
Despicable.
