Four Killed in Another Attack at a Chinese School

(Aug. 4) -- A man waving a huge knife barged into a kindergarten in eastern China and stabbed to death three children and a teacher, Chinese media reported today. It's the latest in a string of school killings that have frightened the nation and spurred communist officials to stifle news reports amid public outrage.

The rampage took place in the town of Zibo in Shandong Province and is believed to be the first major school stabbing since Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao pledged to end such attacks. In May, Wen ordered schools across China again to double security, and he promised to address social issues like mental illness and unemployment that might contribute to crime sprees.

Tuesday's attack happened as parents were lining up to pick up their children from school. Many of the victims' faces were slashed so badly that their parents couldn't recognize them, the BBC quoted a local Zibo newspaper as saying. Screams reverberated through the schoolyard.

A 27-year-old man has turned himself in to police, The New York Times quoted Chinese websites as saying. Various accounts differed as to the number of attackers and those wounded. The China Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy put the casualty tolls at four children killed and 12 wounded, CNN reported.

The English language website of China's official Xinhua news agency carried no mention today of the stabbings, but Bloomberg News said an earlier Xinhua report identified the suspect as a self-employed local man, Fang Jiantang. He reportedly confessed to using a nearly 2-foot-long knife to slash several children. Police have confiscated the murder weapon.

In the past, China's government has tried to snuff out news coverage of school attacks, fearing copycat crimes or negative publicity. After Tuesday's attack, the government imposed a news blackout in which all accounts of the incident were blocked from the Internet, and photos of the bloodshed banned, the Times reported.

Nearly 20 children, some as young as 3 years old, have been killed this year in bizarre and violent attacks on schools and kindergartens across China. Most have been blamed on personal grudges or insanity, and many have taken place on China's densely populated east coast, where wealth disparity and social pressures are highest.

Zibo is a city of about 670,000 some 230 miles south of the capital Beijing.

Last weekend, a drunken tractor driver went on a rampage in Hebei province to the west of Zibo, killing 17 people by smashing homes, shops and cars with his digger machine

Chinese teen kills nine in knife attack
    AFP – 8 hrs ago.

    ..

A teenager has been arrested after killing nine people and wounding four others in a knife attack in northeast China, state media reported Thursday.

The 17-year-old, who was identified only by his surname Li, barged into the home of his girlfriend armed with a knife following an argument and killed two relatives of the girl, the Legal Daily said.

As he left his girlfriend's home in Liaoning province's Xinbin county, he stabbed six more people to death and wounded five, it said.

One of the injured died Thursday in hospital, the paper said.

Li was arrested near the scene of the attack, late on Wednesday night, and was taken into custody, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

Police had nabbed him as he was preparing to jump from a building in an apparent suicide attempt, it added.

No other details were immediately available. Calls made to local authorities and police in Xinbin county went unanswered.

Violent crime has been on the rise in China in recent decades as the nation's economy has boomed and the gap between rich and poor has expanded at an alarming rate.

Experts say the increase in assaults shows that China is paying the price for focusing on more than 30 years of economic growth while ignoring problems linked to rapid social change.

Studies have described a rise in the prevalence of mental disorders in China, some of them linked to stress as the pace of life becomes faster and socialist support systems wither.

However, authorities stress that murder, which carries the death penalty, remains far less common than in most Western countries.

China School Stabbing: Angry Parent Kills 3 Students, Teacher
    Tuesday, 02 Sep 2014 08:02 AM
    By Clyde Hughes

A China school stabbing on the first day of classes Monday left three students and a teacher dead and several more injured after a parent, who was allegedly angry that officials wouldn't allow his daughter to register, lashed out.

The suspect, Chen Yanfu, reportedly stormed a fifth-grade classroom around 10:20 a.m. and attacked three children and the instructor with a fruit knife, The New York Times reported. He then jumped to his death from atop the school building, according to a police statement.

CCTV, China's state broadcaster, claimed Yanfu was upset that school officials wouldn’t allow his daughter to register for the new term. Administrators said that was because the girl had not finished her summer homework, according to The Times.

The attack highlights an uptick in violent crime in China, which is still rare in the communist country compared to other industrialized nations, according to Reuters. The Chinese have even taken steps to improve security measures at schools in recent years following a series of attacks, at times linked to people with personal grudges or those suffering from mental health problems.

In a separate incident back in May, a different man stabbed and injured eight students in a primary school in another city in Hubei, according to Reuters. In December 2012, a man broke into a primary school in Henan and stabbed and injured 23 children, CCTV noted.

In another incident in March 2010, a man stabbed eight students to death at a school in China's southeastern Fujian province after breaking up with his girlfriend, according to police.

In yet another stabbing in 2010, three more children died and more than 20 students and staff members were injured at a Chinese kindergarten in Shandong province.

Knives were also the weapons of choice for Chinese separatists in a series of bloody attacks on train passengers earlier this year. One such attack in March left 29 dead and some 130 injured in Kunming.

The attack is being blamed on a Xinjiang separatist group from northwest China. The train station violence was seen as evidence of rising ethnic tensions in the Xinjiang region of China.

Stabbing spree in rural western Japan town leaves 5 people dead
    Published March 09, 2015 ·Associated Press

OSAKA, Japan – Five people were killed in their homes Monday in a stabbing spree in rural Japan, police said, in a rare case of major violence in the country. A 40-year-old neighbor of the victims was arrested in connection with the attacks, said Keizo Okumoto, deputy police chief in Sumoto, a small city on an island in western Japan where the spree occurred.

Okumoto identified the suspect as Tatsuhiko Hirano, an unemployed man. The motive was unclear, and police have yet to find the weapon used in the attacks. A man and a woman were found dead in one house, and another man and two women from a nearby house died after being taken to a hospital, Okumoto said. The victims ranged in age from 60 to 80 years old, according to media reports.

Violent crime is relatively rare in Japan, and even more so in most small towns. Sumoto, a city of 44,000 people on Awaji island, is known for its oranges, onions and Awaji beef. Japanese television stations showed the victims' homes sitting amid agricultural fields. "Normally, we get one call a day, if that," Okumoto said. "And usually it's about a bike theft or someone getting beaten up."
