What’s Truth Got to Do With It?

You’ve heard it said that the First Amendment gives us the right to free speech, but it doesn’t give us the right to yell “Fire” in a crowded theater. In other words, with rights come certain responsibilities; we’re not given carte blanche to say anything we want at any time. The First Amendment also gives us the right of a free press, in the same breath, in fact, as it gives the right to free speech. From this, I think we can assume that the framers saw these rights as practically the same—one being spoken, the other written.

The media is given a huge portion of power. The ability to inform is underestimated by most, yet abused by many. God chose to reveal His will to mankind through the spoken and written word. Jesus is referred to in the New Testament as the “Word.” Words can communicate either truth, error or, as is often the case, both. The wrong word at wrong time can send the wrong message, but the right word at the right time can bring understanding. We are all guilty of misusing words at times, but when it becomes a habit, we need to evaluate our communication skills. I believe the media in this country is at this particular crossroads.

The restraints and the responsibilities that the media should be exercising have long since vanished into the rabbit-hole of partisan politics. It’s no secret that every media outlet has a particular point of view on what is being reported—no one is truly objective. FOX News can claim that: “We report, you decide,” but hopefully we’re all a little smarter than that. FOX has an agenda, just as much as CNN has.

But, the real point here is fact-checking. How, in our media-saturated world can we ever really know the REAL story? The media is often referred to as the fourth branch of government, which should highlight both their responsibility and their power. In a field that is theoretically dedicated to getting at the truth, anonymous sources (real or otherwise) are often the ones driving the bus, with zero accountability. Unnamed sources are necessary sometimes, but they were never meant to allow half-truths and hearsay to be printed as truth. It was supposed to be like the blurry oval that is used in crime documentaries, giving someone close to the action a chance to tell the story without revealing their true identity, often for reasons of safety.

The “free press” ideal of the Constitutional framers was never meant for us to become a society of individual reporters. Deadlines and cigar-chomping editors used to be the determining factors in what got released to the public as “news.” Today, the internet has removed these obstacles and has made “being first” the primary determining factor. Everyone wants to be the one to “break” the story and if that means making a few things up—or leaving a few things out—what’s the big deal? ABC’s recent linking of Joker shooter James Holmes with the TEA party is only one of many instances of ideological prejudices driving the presentation of the “news.”

As long as ideology—whether it’s political, religious, sexual orientation, cultural, tribal, or whatever—continues to drive the media, it will continue to get more fragmented and individualistic. When “truth” is arrived at only after it has been distilled through someone’s ideological grid and washed clean of anything that may offend their sensibilities (You hearing me, Tolerance Police?), it is no longer truth. It is an opinion baptized in current events. Personally, I am rather tired of having to read three news stories to get the big picture of one event. Anyway, they say history always repeats itself. Maybe I’ll just wait for the re-run…

    Wal-Mart vs. The Morons

    1. Americans spend $36,000,000 at Wal-Mart every hour of every day.

    2. This works out to $20,928 profit every minute!

    3. Wal-Mart will sell more from January 1 to St. Patrick's Day (March 17th) than Target sells all year.

    4. Wal-Mart is bigger than Home Depot + Kroger + Target +Sears + Costco + K-Mart combined.

    5. Wal-Mart employs 1.6 million people, is the world's largest private employer, and most speak English.

    6. Wal-Mart is the largest company in the history of the world.

    7. Wal-Mart now sells more food than Kroger and Safeway combined, and keep in mind they did this in only fifteen years.

    8. During this same period, 31 big supermarket chains sought bankruptcy.

9.. Wal-Mart now sells more food than any other store in the world.

    10. Wal-Mart has approx 3,900 stores in the USA of which 1,906 are Super Centers; this is 1,000 more than it had five years ago.

    11. This year 7.2 billion different purchasing experiences will occur at Wal-Mart stores. (Earth's population is approximately 6.5 Billion.)

    12. 90% of all Americans live within fifteen miles of a Wal-Mart.

You may think t hat I am complaining, but I am really laying the ground work for suggesting that MAYBE we should hire the guys who run Wal-Mart to fix the economy.

This should be read and understood by all Americans Democrats, Republicans, EVERYONE!!

To President Obama and all 535 voting members of the Legislature,

It is now official that the majority of you are corrupt morons:

    a. The U.S. Postal Service was established in 1775. You have had 234 years to get it right and it is broke.

    b. Social Security was established in 1935. You have had 74 years to get it right and it is broke.

    c. Fannie Mae was established in 1938. You have had 71 years to get it right and it is broke.

    d. War on Poverty started in 1964. You have had 45 years to get it right; $1 trillion of our money is confiscated each year and transferred to "the poor" and they only want more.

    e. Medicare and Medicaid were established in 1965. You have had 44 years to get it right and they are broke.

    f. Freddie Mac was established in 1970. You have had 39 years to get it right and it is broke.

    g. The Department of Energy was created in 1977 to lessen our dependence on foreign oil. It has ballooned to 16,000 employees with a budget of $24 billion a year and we import more oil than ever before. You had 32 years to get it right and it is an abysmal failure.

You have FAILED in every "government service" you have shoved down our throats while overspending our tax dollars.

By the way; since the Eisenhower era there have been over 200 taxes added to our taxpaying citizens so during the times of government run agency’s failures they had more tax money income that ever.

And you took over the Mustang Ranch in Nevada because they didn't pay their taxes, and now it is closed. You could not even run a house of prostitution.

AND YOU WANT AMERICANS TO BELIEVE YOU CAN BE TRUSTED WITH A GOVERNMENT-RUN HEALTH CARE SYSTEM ??

    ..

Even our trains have a problem after being taken over by the government. I lived in a small town in northern NM and frequently took the train to Albuquerque. It stopped for two minutes in our town - on the dot - every day around 11 and returned that evening about 7 or so - again stopping for two minutes on the dot on schedule. I just don't remember the exact times - I am an "Old Timer!" I ate lunch and dinner at a table with a tablecloth, cloth napkin and heavy silver. There was a waiter and it was a well cooked meal, inexpensive and a lovely way to travel. The government took it over and it became Amtrak. It never ran on time - who knew whether it would be there at the 11 am scheduled time - or 3 in the afternoon. The food - if you could even get to the dining room - wasn't good and the service was bad. I had to take it once after it was taken over - horrible experience! Never again! With all the bad service, lack of dependability, is it any wonder that it has to be subsidized by our taxpayer dollars? Who wants to travel by such means?

No Media Grousing as Obama Goes Seven Weeks Without Taking a Question From WH Press Corps
    August, 6, 2012 — nicedeb

He’s certainly gone without taking a question longer than that during his tenure , but this is worth mentioning because of the very public media hand-wringing over Romney’s failure to take many questions during his overseas trip, even though he did in fact hold a press availability during the trip. http://nicedeb.wordpress.com/2012/07...is-born-video/

Keith Koffler of White House Dossier reports: http://www.whitehousedossier.com/201...eeks-question/

President Obama has not taken a serious question from the White House press corps in nearly seven weeks, a remarkable string that points to a campaign-style White House operation that is seeking to insulate the candidate from tough cross examination.

The last substantive question Obama took from a White House reporter was during a June 20 press conference following the G20 Summit in Los Cabos, Mexico. Obama allowed only six questions during the event, which was nearly guaranteed to keep him out of political hot water as the focus was on foreign policy.

Since then, Obama has held no press conferences, given no interviews to White House reporters, and taken no questions at the White House events he has held where reporters have been present.
When Mitt didn’t take many questions during his trip to Europe and Israel, the media was outraged, but the President’s similar behavior has sparked no similar protest, Koffler says.

To the contrary, Daily Caller White House reporter Neil Munro was derided by his colleagues when he interrupted Obama’s remarks in the Rose Garden June 15 to try to ask about immigration. Munro said he thought Obama had finished.

It turns out that was one of the last questions any White House reporter has asked the president.

A question the palace guards would never ask their Precious: What about your gaffes re this staged photo: http://minx.cc/?post=331659

It seems the SCOAMF may have riled up the Turkish with his little staged tough-guy photo:

The picture, which was interpreted as vaguely menacing by some critics, caused a stir in Turkey.

The photo reveals from whom our Prime Minister receives orders to rule the country, Metin Lutfi Baydar, a lawmaker with Turkey’s main opposition party the Republican People’s Party (CHP), said in a statement.

CHP vice president Umut Oran asked through parliament if Erdogan had seen the picture and if he would take action against an implicit insult to Turkey and its citizens.

Yeah, but what about Romney’s taxes? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fw9nh...layer_embedded

Paul Rahe engages in the ni gge rization of left liberalism

“How Hatred Became a Liberal Value”: http://ricochet.com/main-feed/How-Ha...e/%28page%29/1

remember when left-liberals insisted on civility. I remember when they condemned the tactics of intimidation championed by the New Left. I remember when progressives insisted on impartiality on the part of judges, civil servants, policemen, and those who purported to be reporting the news (as opposed to espousing opinion). There were always exceptions to the rule. Dan Rather was playing tricks as early as 1963. But, when caught and exposed, these exceptions took it on the chin. Today they rarely even apologize.

I remember when liberals sported on their automobiles bumper stickers reading, “Hatred is not a Family Value.” Then, back in 2003, in The New Republic, Jonathan Chait wrote an essay explaining why it was legitimate to hate George W. Bush, and the dam burst. Civility is no longer a liberal ideal. And now – as yesterday’s armed attack on the Family Research Council in Washington, the five-hour delay in President Obama’s condemnation of the act as he calculated whether it was in his interest to comment or not, and the mainstream media’s initial reluctance to report on the event, much less highlight the activist LGBT connections of the shooter suggest – left liberals are willing to wink at violence. It may be regrettable, they think, but, like stealing elections, it is all in a good cause – and before figuring out how to respond to an outbreak of violence on the part of their allies, they pause to calculate the political consequences. You will not hear liberals arguing for a crackdown on the use of force by animal-rights activists, environmental activists, union thugs, and the Occupy movement. Instead, you will find in them a desperate hankering to pin on the Tea Party responsibility for conduct the Tea-Partiers abhor and a willingness to engage in race-baiting and talk of class warfare on a stunning scale.

The truth is that it is a short distance from the hatred preached by Jonathan Chait to assassination, and five and six years ago there was a great deal of open, public fantasizing along these lines by left liberals.
Inflammatory stuff. Provocational, even. In fact, were Mr Rahe to be gunned down as a result of writing such racist lies — and that’s what these lies are, racist, because we all know that talk of incivility and anger is really just code for “I see militant blacks crouching in the shrubbery” – left-liberals, while they can’t of course condone such violence, can nevertheless certainly will understand it: after all, they can intellectualize violent events and tease out all sort of root causes and homecoming chickens aching for roost — and in that regard, sympathize with the motivation, if not the action. Because, you see, they care and they feel and they can relate.

That, and it’s okay to be intolerant of intolerance. In fact it’s encouraged. And as a caring, feeling, relating progressive, what can be more righteously cleansing than your abject, visceral hatred of horrific haters who hate? Because their racist, xenophobic, homophobic, misogynistic, and anthropocentric hatred leaves them deserving of your righteous and goodly hatred of hate — without which you would be tacitly condoning their evil, and find yourself labeled a hater, as well.

And you’d hate for that to happen, no?

It has gotten horrendous. I usually watch ABC. This evening's "news" was full of fluff and cutie stories of "President Obama", any negativity was no where to be found. *crickets*. If they mentioned his name once, they mentioned it 50 times, lovingly, in an hour. Funny how their tone changed when mentioning Romney..... How ridiculously blatant can they be?

    Obama mocked for softball interviews
By Devin Dwyer | ABC OTUS News – 9 hrs ago.

Cue the KOB-FM radio interview with Obama that aired this morning in Albuquerque, N.M.

The president fielded no substantive questions on news of the day or matters of policy. Instead, he discussed his favorite type of chili, iPod playlist, a desired superpower, and Carly Rae Jepsen's hit single, "Call Me Maybe."

An on-screen graphic in the RNC ad reads: "THIS IS NOT A PARODY."

    http://www.youtube.com/embed/KjGXKD91Gtk

Republicans are taking President Obama to task for evading public questioning by the White House press corps for more than eight weeks, while instead granting a series of interviews to entertainment media outlets with whom he discussed largely frivolous subjects.

A new web video by the Republican National Committee asks, "why is Obama avoiding the White House press corps?" It features a clip of Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt insisting that the president has fielded substantive questions during interviews with local media on his swings through battleground states. "I wouldn't assume that if he's in a local market that the reporters' questions will be any less serious," LaBolt says.

Asked about Obama's streak of lighter interviews, including sit-downs with Entertainment Tonight and People Magazine, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said today that the president has also been accessible to members of the local and national press, including at an official Oval Office bill signing in the past week. "The president has spent a lot of time answering questions from journalists all across the country. The president's spent a lot of time talking publicly about the issues that he thinks are at stake in this election and are worthy of an important political debate about the future of the country. And that is something that he feels a responsibility to do," he said.

As for whether the interviews risk making the president appear out of touch with the nation's serious economic issues, Earnest dismissed the notion. "Anybody who has listened to what the president has said on the - on the campaign trail - the president over the course of this week has done three and four events a day where he's talking about issues that he thinks are at the top of the political agenda, that are so critical to the future of this country," he said.

Obama last took questions from the White House press corps at a news conference during the G20 summit in Chicago in June. His last formal White House news conference was on March 6.
