    Earthquake rocks Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- A magnitude-5.8 earthquake has struck just east of Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake's epicenter was about 2 miles southwest of Chino Hills and about 5 miles southeast of Diamond Bar, the USGS said.

The center was about 7.6 miles deep. In general, earthquakes centered closer to the Earth's surface produce stronger shaking and can cause more damage than those further underground.

A 5.8 magnitude quake is considered by the USGS to be "moderate," which can cause slight damage to buildings and others structures. About 500 can happen globally each year, the survey says.

    Strong quake shakes Southern California
By ROBERT JABLON, Associated Press Writer
    5 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES - A strong earthquake shook Southern California on Tuesday, causing buildings to sway and triggering some precautionary evacuations. No immediate damage was reported.

The jolt was felt from Los Angeles to San Diego, and slightly in Las Vegas.

Preliminary information from the U.S. Geological Survey estimated the quake at magnitude 5.8, centered 29 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles near Chino Hills in San Bernardino County. Ten aftershocks occurred in the next dozen minutes, including three estimated at 3.8.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said there were no immediate reports of damage or injury in Los Angeles. San Bernardino County fire dispatch also had no immediate reports of damage.

The quake struck at 11:42 a.m. PDT. Buildings swayed in downtown Los Angeles for several seconds.

Workers quickly evacuated some office buildings.

"It was dramatic. The whole building moved and it lasted for a while," said Los Angeles County sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore, who was in the sheriff's suburban Monterey Park headquarters east of Los Angeles.

In Orange County, about 2000 detectives were attending gang conference at a Marriott hotel in Anaheim when a violent jolt shook the main conference room.

Mike Willever, who was at the hotel, said, "First we heard the ceiling shaking, then the chandelier started to shake, then there was a sudden movement of the floor."

Chris Watkins, from San Diego, said he previously felt several earthquakes, but "that was one of the worst ones."

Delegates and guests at a cluster of hotels near the Disneyland resort spilled into the streets immediately after the quake.

The 1994 Northridge earthquake under Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley was magnitude 6.7. It killed 72 people, injured more than 9,000 and caused $25 billion in damage in the metropolitan area.

The damage created by an earthquake depends greatly on where it hits. A 7.1 quake — much stronger than Northridge — hit the Mojave Desert in 1999 but caused only a few injuries and no deaths.

California is one of the world's most seismically active regions. More than 300 faults crisscross the state, which sits atop two of Earth's major tectonic plates, the Pacific and North American plates. About 10,000 quakes each year rattle Southern California alone, although most of them are too small to be felt.

My sister and BIL live in Villa Park (just outside Orange). I just called and their phone rang really weird. It was a jittery ring. I don't know if that had anything to do with the quake or not.

Bahet, I live in L.A. and the news was saying that people in Orange County were e-mailing the station that their phones were ringing, but they couldn't answer them or make out-going calls. So I'd say that the wierd ring almost surely was caused by the quake.

I was on the phone to a credit card company, making a very advantageous balance transfer (0% for 15 months!) when the quake struck. I wasn't about to terminate the call! I told the svc. rep that we were having a quake, grabbed my son and got on his bottom bunk, then finished the transaction once the shaking stopped. (The call center was in Missouri, so I didn't get cut off, thank goodness!) I think it lasted about 20 seconds, but it felt a lot longer than that, of course! So far, no major damage reported in the area, and I just had a few bottles of shampoo fall off my shelf.

Glad you are okay - you are way braver then me. I would have been curled up in a little ball while you are just talking on the phone. Who did the operator from MO take the news ?

She seemed pretty "rattled," as everyone says. But she was patient, as I told her it was at least a 5 on the Richter scale, and I said she could be the first one in her office to relay the news.

As for brave, well, I've been through all the big ones here in Southern CA since 1960. I woke up to the Sylmar earthquake in 1971, and thought I was dreaming about body surfing in the ocean. My bed was bouncing around and sliding around the room that violently! We kids didn't realize how serious it was until we saw the news of dead bodies being pulled out of the Veterans' Hospital.

The Northridge quake in '94 was the worst one, and that was just like a giant had picked up your house and was shaking it violently! That was the REALLY bad one, where our freeways fell down and 72 people were killed and more than 12,000 injured! (But that included the greater L.A. area, and there are 6 million people here, so your odds of being one of those 72 killed are pretty slim!)

There've been few small ones since then, but I am always prepared. My large pieces of furniture are anchored to the walls, I use earthquake wax to keep things from sliding off counters and being thrown at you, and I know to stay away from glass doors and windows. My son has a bunk bed, so we got on the bottom bunk and I felt pretty safe there. I always have my "earthquake supply kit" which is in a big trash can with wheels, so it can be rolled away, if necessary. As a matter of fact, I've been replacing all the stuff in it for the last month (a small bottle of bleach opened in it and destroyed almost everything in it). Yesterday, I had just sealed it up, thinking, "Well, that's the basics. Now I should start making copies of important documents and have those in a safe place." I guess I had better get to work on that!

I'm in Orange County and felt it here. A couple things were knocked off of my bookcase but that's about it. We've been due for one. I still would take an earthquake over a hurricane or tornado any day.
