Bill Clinton claim about assault weapons ban earns 3 Pinocchios — 4th Pinocchio AWOL
    By Doug Powers • January 14, 2013 11:14 AM

What the American people have got to decide is whether they believe people like me.”

    – Bill Clinton, October 2012
    http://cnsnews.com/news/article/clin...ieve-people-me

Former president, Golden Globe Award presenter and newest Father of the Year honoree Bill Clinton was up to his old tricks the other day — this time concerning data surrounding the assault weapons ban.

From Paul Mirnegoff at Powerline http://www.powerlineblog.com/archive...un-control.php (via Instapundit http://pjmedia.com/instapundit/161465/ ):

At a speech before the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on January 9, Bill Clinton stated: “Half of all mass killings in the United States have occurred since the assault weapon ban expired in 2005, half in the history of the country.” But that statement is untrue, as Glenn Kessler of the Washington Post demonstrates.

Asked by Kessler about his statement, Clinton’s spokesman declined to comment or to say where Clinton got his numbers. As Kessler, a professional fact-checker, says, “this always makes us suspicious.”
    From Kessler’s fact check: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...0eb9_blog.html

According to his research, he has identified 156 mass public shootings in the United States in the past 100 years. Duwe defines a mass public shooting as an incident in which four or more victims are killed publicly with guns within 24 hours — in the workplace, schools, restaurants and other public places — excluding shootings in connection with crimes such as robbery, drugs or gangs. (Note that this would exclude a number of “mass murders” that sometimes get lumped into the data, such as the Beltway sniper who killed 10 people over a three-week period in 2002. [Which took place during the assault weapons ban -- DP])

Since 2005, when the assault ban expired, there have been 32 such mass public shootings, including seven in 2012, Duwe said. So that’s just over 20 percent of all mass public shootings, which is much less than Clinton’s 50 percent.

Kessler gave Clinton’s statement three Pinocchios instead of four — the latter would have labeled the claim an all-out whopper. However, it’s possible the fourth Pinocchio was still hospitalized due to exhaustion after previous Bill Clinton fact checks, so we’ll cut some slack for its absence from this one.

Universal background check': What does it mean?
    Tuesday, January 15, 2013 - 12:00am

NATIONAL NEWS (CNN) — The "universal background checks" now being pushed by some gun control supporters is code for closing federal loopholes on such checks at gun shows and other private sales.

U.S. law requires background checks for all people who try to buy firearms from federally licensed dealers. But federal law does not require background checks for "private transactions," like sales at gun shows. Many states have their own statues requiring such checks for private sales.

The issue has risen high in the national conversation after the shock ignited by December's mass shooting of six adults and 20 children at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

Expanded background checks now enjoy the support of mayors in some of the largest cities in America. The idea has been embraced by gun violence survivor Gabrielle Giffords, a self-described gun owner. It's also being considered for possible legislation by a White House task force led by Vice President Joe Biden. "This may be the single most important gun violence prevention measure that the government could adopt," said Lindsay Nichols, an attorney with the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. "This loophole means that dangerous criminals and dangerously mentally ill individuals have a most unfettered access to firearms."

But NRA President David Keene suggested to CNN's Candy Crowley that he has little faith in universal background checks, saying they don't work.

Keene spoke a few days after sitting in on the Biden task force. He implied that the task force wasn't sincerely considering NRA positions on gun control issues, saying they were simply "checking the box. They were able to say, 'We've met with the NRA. We've met with the people that are strong Second Amendment supporters.' "

Later, the NRA issued a statement saying it was "disappointed with how little this meeting had to do with keeping our children safe and how much it had to do with an agenda to attack the Second Amendment."

What part of universal background checks does the NRA support?

Keene did say he favored background checks to block people from buying guns who may be mentally ill or potentially violent. But federal law already requires that, Nichols said.

One problem with the systems is that many states don't report the names of people who've been legally labeled dangerously mentally ill.

Improving the accuracy and availability of information about these people, Keene said, is one possible area for agreement. He suggested "tightening up on putting information in the database. It's school security. It's beefing up the way we deal with the mentally ill."

Nichols said "huge gaps" exist in the database, which is called the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS. For example, the Virginia Tech shooter, who killed 33 people and himself in 2007, had passed two background checks because Virginia didn't submit his mentally ill status to the database, Nichols said.

"As a result of that shooting, the federal government passed a law encouraging these states to submit these records, and a large number of states passed laws. So there's been significant improvement in reporting dangerously mentally ill persons to NICS," Nichols said. "But there are still about half of the states that report hardly any dangerously mentally ill people. They may not have the resources or the political will to enforce the law. Yeah, it's crazy."

How do background checks now work?

Anytime someone buys a gun from a federally licensed gun dealer, the dealer is required to run a check on the buyer by submitting the name to the federal database. That database consists of criminal records and mental health records as provided by federal and state courts and agencies.

Convicted felons, people convicted of violent domestic crimes, and those determined by the courts to be dangerously mentally ill are prohibited by federal law from buying firearms, Nichols said.

Also, states have added their own categories of who is prohibited from buying a gun, Nichols said. For example, California prohibits gun ownership for people convicted of any kind of violent crime, drug offenses, alcohol abuse and juvenile offenses while underage, Nichols said.

Vermont, however, is the only state without such laws, Nichols said.

Just how many gun purchases don't require federal background checks, and how does that happen?

Forty percent of all firearms purchased in the United States are sold without background checks because the guns aren't bought from a federally licensed firearms dealer, Nichols said. Rather, those weapons are bought at gun shows, on street corners, over the Internet or from friends or neighbors, Nichols said.

These are the so-called loopholes in the current federal background check system.

The NRA disputes that characterization about the "gun show loophole" because federally licensed firearms dealers participate at gatherings and, of course, conduct background checks. "Most of the guns that are purchased at a gun show are purchased from federal firearms-licensed holders," Keene said.

He challenged the 40% figure for gun sales without background checks -- particularly at gun shows. "We don't know what (is the) percentage at gun shows. It may be 10%," Keene said. "It's not such a loophole at gun shows. But it's like if you sell me your shotgun, that's a private transaction. Just as if I sell you a car, I don't have a dealer's license."

Ten states and the District of Columbia have their own laws requiring background checks for any firearm sold at a gun show, Nichols said.

Six more states require background checks for gun-show sales of handguns -- but not for rifles or shotguns, Nichols said.

In total, 16 states and the District of Columbia require background checks on handguns sold at gun shows, Nichols said.

These states that close loopholes, however, provide exemptions for gun transfers between immediate family members and between licensed dealers, Nichols said.

    Are background checks effective?

From the time when the gun control measures of the Brady Act were enacted on March 1, 1994, through the end of 2008, the federal government processed more than 97 million applications for gun transfers or permits, the Justice Department says.

Almost 1.8 million applications were denied, the agency said.

On this matter, both sides are in agreement.

Said Keene: "Background checks are generally a good thing."

Added Nichols: "Background checks have a huge deterrent effect. People who are ineligible to buy a gun are unlikely to try if they know they are going to be subjected to a background check."

    http://www.nbc33tv.com/news/national...ackground-chec

I support the background checks ... but if the State isn't going to do THEIR part and report on those who's mental instability precludes them from owning a gun ... then what is the point ? They will cite HIPPA regulations and privacy concerns to protect the mentally ill ... but then cry when one of them gets a gun ??

‘Shameless’: Obama to Surround Himself with Children for Gun-Grabbing Announcement
By John Hill on January 15, 2013

“Props”: Obama Will Use Children as Political ‘Human Shields’ as He Moves to Attack the 2nd Amendment

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney announced this afternoon that President Obama will unveil a “concrete package” of gun control proposals including assault weapons bans, high capacity ammunition magazine bans, and closing loopholes on background checks including potential executive orders immediately restricting gun rights.

Carney said that the president will be joined by Vice President Joe Biden as well as children who wrote to the president after the Newtown shootings. “They will be joined by children around the country expressing their concerns about gun violence and school safety, along with their parents,” Carney confirmed.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=SgYdG8x_83w

The press conference will take place Wednesday at 11:45 a.m.

Fox News host Megyn Kelly broke the news during her broadcast Tuesday, and reaction was swift and fierce from across the Internet…

Kelly read her Twitter feed to get immediate reaction to Carney’s remarks.

“[People are] calling it disgusting, calling it shameless, one person pointing out that…those who feel differently than the president should have their own news conference with children whose lives were saved by guns.”
The Washington Examiner reports that “White House officials believe that moving swiftly on gun proposals at a national level, before the shock over the Newtown shooting fades”, gives Obama the best chance to get his proposals through Congress.

So emotional manipulation and children-as-propaganda – that is what Obama will use to try and force radical gun right restrictions down America’s throat.

As former Obama Chief of Staff and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel infamously said: “Never let a good crisis go to waste“.

Or as Megyn Kelly said: “Disgusting“.

Liberal gun control advocates turn down gun free zone signs at their homes
Journalists, Politicians Refuse to Post Lawn Sign saying, "Home is Proudly Gun Free".

    January 15, 2013
    By: Christopher Collins

Project Veri tas' founder, James O'Keefe, today, after investigating voter fraud in 2012, decided to investigate how gun control advocates would react if placed in the same position as many of the nation’s schools throughout the nation that are considered a “Gun Free Zone”.

Liberal journalists, politicians, and the controversial New York's Journal News reporters who posted the names and locations of legal gun owners, turn down “gun free zone” signs for their yards, or had armed security that most people do not have.

O'Keefe remarked, "Our nation's children spend the majority of their week within schools that are starkly emblazoned with signs that read 'Gun Free Zone.' Project Veri tas put that same concept to the test with some of America's most fervent advocates for gun control."

Organizing as Citizens Against Senseless Violence, Project Veri tas' citizen journalists went door-to-door in New York, New Jersey and Washington, D.C. to see which outspoken champions for Gun Control would be willing to declare their own home as a "Gun Free Zone" by placing a sign on their lawn.

O'Keefe continued, "It's amazing to see members of our media equivocate and contradict their spoken and written words when faced with the dilemma to declare their own homes as Gun Free. Surprisingly, we found that the homes of the very New York paper that was willing to put the lives and fortunes of gun owners at risk by publishing their names and addresses, were also the most heavily armed and protected. The hypocrisy of New York's Journal News is beyond words."

Project Veri tas also paid a visit to Attorney General Eric Holder's home to see if the nation's top enforcer of gun restrictions would be willing to place a sign in front of his home that read, "This home is proudly gun free!"

O'Keefe concluded, "FBI Police confronted our reporters within minutes of their knocking on the Attorney General's home. Eric Holder is safe and sound under armed protection, unlike the nation's children."

While gun control advocates call for more gun control including some who advocate a full ban on any type of firearm, they ignore that gun laws have never worked, as in the city of Chicago with the tightest gun laws in the nation, proved last year.

The Paulding County Republican Examiner shared a RT News report that Chicago’s murder rate has far outpaced even other notoriously dangerous cities and will most likely be 2013’s US murder capital with 18 murders so far this year. New York City has only seen seven murders through Jan. 7, even though its population is three times as large as Chicago is while Detroit, MI, which is experiencing a 20-year murder rate high, was host to six homicides through Jan. 6, 2013.

What I most admire about James O’Keefe…

    …is his willingness and unmatched ability to go after the most sacred of sacred cows: The sanctimonious beasts of the Fourth Estate;

    …his relentlessness in exposing media double standards;

    …his entrepreneurial independence;

    …his indefatigable humor;

…and his success in bringing a smile to my face every time he produces another classic video using the very techniques of those hallowed beasts of the Fourth Estate who feign objectivity.

As you all know, several newspapers over the years have endangered law-abiding gun owners under the guise of transparency and public service by publishing databases of registered concealed handgun permit holders (see an early example on this blog from 2007 http://michellemalkin.com/2007/03/13...e-of-sunshine/ ). After the horrible Newtown massacre,The Journal News in New York and the Star-Ledger in New Jersey took it upon themselves to demonize law-abiding gun owners and provide free road maps to criminals. http://twitchy.com/2012/12/24/ny-pap...ates-outraged/

O’Keefe and his Project Veri tas took it upon themselves to visit some of these journalists, as well as liberal MSNBC anti-gunner Toure’ and Eric Holder’s residence. http://twitchy.com/2013/01/15/new-ja...ee-yard-signs/

Tim McVeigh, IIRC, was a military veteran and a crack shot.

By which I mean, he was allegedly an excellent marksman.

Which is probably why he decided to BLOW UP the Murrah building. Cause, y’know, ammo is expensive.

    ..

One bullet magazine…… the woman who protected herself and her twins put 5 bullets in that criminal and he was able to flee. How far would she have gotten with one bullet? What about all the bodyguards and private security people, will they be limited to one bullet? I’d hate to be a Brinks guard.

Now that Democratic N.Y. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has piled on more ineffective gun control measures upon existing, ineffective gun control laws, http://twitchy.com/2013/01/15/new-yo...ions-into-law/ New Yorkers are coming up with alternative methods of self defense. #SelfDefenseInNY is trending nationwide in the U.S. We don’t know whether to laugh or cry, but we’re sure glad we don’t live in New York.

New York’s state senate late last night voted to pass a set of sweeping new gun regulations that one senator called “the toughest gun control package in the nation.” Wasting no time, today the New York State Assembly approved the package by a 104-43 vote and immediately passed it along to Gov. Andrew Cuomo for his signature.

The legislation expands the state’s assault weapons ban and prohibits semiautomatic pistols and rifles “with detachable magazines and one military-style feature, as well as semiautomatic shotguns with one military-style feature.” Citizens who already own guns prohibited by the new law will be required to register them with the state. The legislation also includes a so-called “Journal News” clause allowing citizens to opt out of having their status as gun permit holders publicized.

Cuomo signed the bill at an afternoon ceremony attended by several mayors from across the state, including New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

I'm amazed. Why? Well, here we are, barely a month after the Sandy Hook School shooting and we now have a plan to take guns away from innocent citizens. Joe Biden, who some question as to whether or not he can even spell plan, has come up with something to present to the dictator-in-chief. Okay, so why do I find that amazing you ask?

How long has it been since you heard anything about Fast and Furious, where our illustrious, Attorney General, Eric Holder sent weapons to KNOWN criminals, resulting in several homicides, not the least of which was a federal agent?!? How long has it been?? Yet, we have a PLAN, as a result of Sandy Hook??

What's the latest on Benghazi, where four Americans died, due to the ineptness of those at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Hearings you say? One of the potential 'star witnesses' (Hillary Clinton) took off from testifying, longer than it's been since Sandy Hook, to recover from a concussion. Yet, we have a PLAN to make certain innocent citizens can no longer enjoy their Constitutional rights.

Can you show me a budget? Wait a second, I'll even make it easier for you. Can you show me a budget from the last FOUR YEARS?!? And before the libs start whining that it's due to the Republicans that we don't have a budget, let me remind you that NOT A SINGLE Democrat voted for the one budget that was proposed.

Barely a month after the shooting at Sandy Hook and we have a plan, that if enforced (yes, enforced, as he is considering an Executive Order), will affect EVERY law-abiding, Constitutionally protected citizen in the United States. Well, Ron, it will affect the criminals as well. Yeah, I wasn't born yet, during Prohibition but I was working as a full-time law enforcement officer enforcing strong drug laws. Did you realize that at one time, it was a mandatory life sentence, if you were found in POSSESSION (not distribution; POSSESSION) of heroin? People still bought and sold heroin. How's that working for you??

Chicago, Illinois is one of the most profound gun control communities in our nation. Yet their homicide rate has skyrocketed. Why? Because the gun laws passed there, did just as the gun laws our dictator-in-chief wishes to enforce will do. They will negatively affect the law-abiding citizens. The thugs could care less!! THAT'S why the're thugs!! Take the guns away from law-abiding citizens and the thugs will be in hog heaven. They won't have to waste a minute wondering if the guy/gal inside that house is armed or not.

For those of you who voted for Obama the first time, and worse, the second time, don't even bother responding. Thirty-three years of being a cop has exposed me to just about every idiot there is. You're just a new breed but no less the idiot.

For the rest of you, stay safe, stay dry and as a favor, I'll try to stay off of here for a couple of hours.

Arnold Schwarzenegger may be one of the world's biggest action stars but the former governor of California says violence in films is entertainment and should not be linked to tragic events like the Connecticut school shooting in which 20 children died. The star of films such as "The Terminator," "Predator" and "True Lies" told a press conference before the opening of his new movie, "The Last Stand," on Jan. 18th that "one has to keep (the two) separate."

"(This is) entertainment and the other thing is a tragedy beyond belief. It's really serious and it's the real deal," Schwarzenegger, 65, told reporters.

The actor, who will star in his first leading role in the film since serving as California governor for seven years, said the tragedy in which a gunman killed 20 children and six staff at the Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14, is about more than just guns. "We have to analyze how we deal with mental illness, how we deal with gun laws, how we deal with parenting," he said.

In "The Last Stand," Schwarzenegger plays a retired Los Angeles policeman who becomes a border town sheriff who must stop a violent drug lord from crossing the border. The film, with its violent scenes, is the type of movie that National Rifle Association chief Wayne LaPierre recently cited as a contributing factor to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

But Schwarzenegger said that gun laws and mental health guidance need reform, not Hollywood. "How can we do better with gun laws?" asked Schwarzenegger. "If there are any loopholes, if there's a problem, let's analyze it ... Are we really dealing with the mental problems the right way as a society?"

In terms of parenting, the former politician alluded to the Connecticut killer Adam Lanza's mother, Nancy, who was also shot and killed by her own son on that tragic day. "Does a mother need to collect guns and take her little kids shooting?" he asked.

"Everything has to be analyzed; no stone unturned," he added. "I think that's what we owe to our people."

Top 5 Movies: 65 Violent Scenes, 185 Victims
    By Matthew Philbin | January 16, 2013

There was another theater massacre last weekend. Casualties ran to nearly 200. Victims were incinerated, bludgeoned, beaten, stabbed, pulled apart by cars (really) and, oh yes, gunned down by the dozen.

It all happened on the screen, to fictional characters. But when Hollywood stars begin demanding gun control for the rest of us, as many have in the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting, it’s worth taking a hard look at the violence they portray and often glamorize.

The five top grossing box office movies for the weekend of Jan. 11 were “Zero Dark Thirty,” “A Haunted House,” “Gangster Squad,” “Django Unchained” and “Les Miserables.” Even with the presence of the PG-13 musical “Les Miserables” and the spoof comedy “A Haunted House,” it was a violent, bloody weekend at the movies.

How bloody? Between those five films, there were 65 scenes of violence, with 185 individual victims. What’s more, 38 of the 65 scenes depicted gun violence. Movies being what they are, the number of victims is probably low. In fast moving scenes of mayhem, with explosions, car chases, multiple shooters, etc., it’s often impossible to know how many people were hurt or injured, and prudence dictates erring on the low side.

To be sure, a lot – perhaps most – of the violence was committed by good guys pursuing justice or other noble ends. In “A Haunted House,” the violence was for comedic effect, and “Zero Dark Thirty” was purporting to show a historical event (the hunt for and killing of Osama Bin Laden.) “Les Miserables” is set in part against the backdrop of revolution. But since assault weapons bans, new laws limiting the capacity of magazines and other gun control measures don’t distinguish good from bad or divine intent, violence in Hollywood films should be held to the same standard.

Two of the films stood out, accounting for a massive share of the violence. In “Gangster Squad,” a period piece about 1940s Los Angeles cops fighting organized crime, eight of the 12 violent scenes involved gunplay, and 65 people were killed or wounded on-screen. In just the first 10 minutes, a man was pulled in half by two cars, another lost a hand in an elevator fight and an attempted rape was narrowly averted.

The mob henchmen of villain Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) fared especially badly. Failing the boss resulted in being locked in a fire-bombed building for some. Another was killed with a power drill to the head. (Cohen: “You know the drill, boys.”)

    http://www.mrctv.org/videos/hollywoo...ce-and-victims

“Gangster Squad” has the distinction among the five films as the only one actually impacted by real-world violence. The film’s trailer debuted along with “The Dark Knight Rises” last summer. It played before that movie the night the gunman opened fire in the Aurora, Col. theater in August. The trailer featured the film’s original climax scene, in which men with Tommy guns rampaged through a movie theater, murdering patrons. http://newsbusters.org/blogs/matthew...ental%20health Wisely, the studio shot a new ending for “Gangster Squad.” In it, nearly 25 people are shot. But they’re not in a theater.

Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” was the other high-body count offering. Of its 19 violent scenes, 12 included guns, and there were at least 69 victims of violence in the film. The title character of “Django Unchained,” played by Jamie Foxx, is a slave turned bounty hunter in the antebellum South. Offered the job, Django said, “Killing white folks and getting paid for it? What's not to like?” Hosting “Saturday Night Live” in December, Foxx included a variation of the line when discussing “Django” in his monologue: “I kill all the white people in the movie. How great is that?”

But less than a month later, Foxx appeared in a video among other celebrities called “Demand a Plan to End Gun Violence.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64G5FfG2Xpg (Foxx is far from alone in his hypocrisy. The trailer for “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” features star Jeremy Renner telling an actress how to recognize his signal: “It’ll be me blowing one of these b-tches’ head off.” Renner is very prominent in the “Demand a Plan” video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64G5FfG2Xpg )

Tarantino, who’s stock in trade is lovingly depicted, over-the top violence, recently dismissed the notion that on-screen mayhem can spur the real-life kind. To question the link between entertainment and violence is, he said “totally disrespectful to [the Sandy Hook victims’] memory. Obviously, the issue is gun control and mental health.”

But it’s not that obvious to everyone. In the Jan. 15 USA Today, Robert Simmermon, “a psychologist who specializes in media,” was quoted on violence on TV. The graphic bloody depiction “desensitizes us, and in a sense dehumanizes us.”

“Criminals toting AK-47s are ‘the equivalent of old cowboys,” he says, “and that’s very dangerous. It appeals to a very primitive part of us.”

Tarantino’s derision to the contrary, when five contemporary films show nearly 200 people victimized by violence of one kind or another – but especially highly stylized gun violence, there just may be something to the idea that society is impacted by culture.

(It should be noted that two very violent films, “Jack Reacher” and “Texas Chainsaw 3-D” were among last weekend’s top five. Further, prior to the screening of “Gangster Squad,” five of seven trailers were for violent action or suspense films, including the “Hansel and Gretel” movie mentioned above.)

The president announced 23 executive measures he plans to undertake to curb gun violence, and also called on Congress to ban assault rifles and high-capacity magazines among other measures. What's your take on the president's plan?

Obama unveils $500 million gun violence package
    Jan 16, 2013 11:03 AM

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama is announcing a $500 million package of executive actions and legislative proposals aimed at reducing gun violence a month after a mass shooting in Connecticut killed 20 elementary school children.

The package includes a call on Congress to ban military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazine and it would close loopholes in the gun sale background check system.

Obama also is signing 23 executive actions - which require no congressional approval - including several aimed at improving access to data for background checks. A presidential memorandum will instruct the Centers for Disease Control to research causes and prevention of gun violence.

In addition, Obama will nominate Todd Jones as director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Jones currently is the acting director of the agency.

Oregon, Texas officials warn White House against enforcing new gun regulations
    Published January 15, 2013 ~ FoxNews.com

State officials in Oregon and Texas are vowing to fight back against any attempt by the federal government to impose new gun control laws.

The warnings come as President Obama prepares to unveil a "comprehensive" plan to address gun violence, based on the recommendations from the Vice President Biden-led task force. The plan is expected to include a call for legislation to ban assault weapons as well as a variety of executive actions.

But in Oregon, Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller wrote a letter to Biden Monday saying his department will not enforce any new gun laws it considers unconstitutional.

Mueller said politicians are "attempting to exploit the deaths of innocent victims" by supporting laws that would harm law-abiding Americans. The sheriff said he took an oath to support the Constitution, and laws preventing citizens from owning certain semi-automatic firearms and ammunition magazines would violate their rights.

"We are Americans," Mueller wrote. "We must not allow, nor shall we tolerate, the actions of criminals, no matter how heinous the crimes, to prompt politicians to enact laws that will infringe upon the liberties of responsible citizens who have broken no laws."

Meanwhile, 1200 WOAI reports that in Texas, Republican state Rep. Steve Toth plans to introduce a bill that would make it illegal to enforce in the state any federal laws restricting semi-automatic firearms or the size of gun magazines.

Toth told 1200 WOAI that the bill would also call for felony charges to be brought against federal officials who attempt to enforce any such rules.

"If a federal official comes into the state of Texas to enforce the federal executive order, that person is subject to criminal prosecution," Toth told 1200 WOAI.

The warnings could be the first wave of state officials pushing back against Congress and the White House as they take up new gun control measures in the wake of the Connecticut mass shooting. Obama and others say new rules to at least limit the size of high-capacity magazines are overdue and could save lives.

Mueller, though, told The Associated Press in a phone interview from Albany, Ore., that he felt compelled to make his views known because sheriffs have not had much of a say on the vice president's anti-gun violence task force. Mueller said his constituents have been repeatedly asking his deputies about what will happen if new gun restrictions are adopted.

"We're restricted and prohibited from enforcing all types of federal laws, including immigration laws," he said Tuesday. "It would be unreasonable for anyone to think that I would enforce a federal firearms law."

Mueller said some other sheriffs expressed support for his stance, but he does not know of any who have pledged to take similar action in regard to potential gun laws.

Linn County is largely rural and politically conservative. Fewer than 40 percent of its registered voters supported President Barack Obama in November. Mueller said most households in the county have guns.

Though the letter might add fuel to an already hot topic, Mueller said he wishes people could have a civilized discussion about the issue, rather than resort to threats and name-calling. He said he doesn't think the vice president is a bad person; he just doesn't like the path he appears to be on regarding gun laws.

"We don't have to be jerks to each other over it," he said. "If old Joe wants to come out here to Linn County, we'd have a good conversation."
