Mother's Day Crafts ( ideas ? )

Flower Pot Recipe Holder

http://childfun.com/index.php/holida....html?start=14

Materials

clay pots
white paint
fabric paint
plaster of paris
silk flowers
permanent markers
craft moss
plastic forks
hot glue gun
recipe card

Directions

Paint the pots white and let dry. Glue Pots to saucers, making sure to plug up the hole in hte bottom of the pot. Fill with plaster(mix according to package directions) When it starts to set, insert plastic flowers and fork with tines UP and cover plaster with moss. When completely dry, decorate the outside and insert mom's favorite recipe on a card in the fork!!

I have a few thoughts for this craft...

Put duct tape over the hole in the flower pot before putting in the plaster of paris. Daddy will feel sufficiently manly making a craft that includes duct tape if he's forced to help make one of these for mommy.

Make thumbprint butterflies or flowers instead of splatters as decoration (see Thumbody Loves Me http://www.dltk-holidays.com/summer/mthumbprints.htm

If you don't need this project to last forever, you can substitute playdough for plaster of paris. Plaster is a much better choice, but according to my husband playdough works wonderfully if you're suddenly reminded Saturday evening (during hockey playoffs) that mother's day is the next morning

Stepping Stones

Materials

Bag of cement
(buy at hardware or homestore, about $3.00 for a big bag - get the kind that says premixed - just add water. Nothing fancy, just the end line stuff)
small, durable momentos to place in cement (we've used rubber frogs and bugs on one, a pacifier and a rattle in one, and hot wheels cars in one in the past)
round 9" disposable cake pans (check to make sure children's feet fit in these, if not, use a larger size)

We did our three kids, and our 2 dogs.
Each of the kids picked something special to go in theirs.
Cassie picked 2 butterfly barrettes, Conor a Star Wars toy,
and Hunter chose 2 plastic bugs he received at Bible Camp.
The rocks we used for names are aquarium gravel!

Directions

This project is easier than it sounds Do it outside, because it gets messy! Mix cement with water according to directions on bag. Pour in tins. Let it sit until it is firm enough to hold a print. Place child's foot in center of tin and smoosh Try to not go all the way to the bottom! Place small knick knacks around foot print like a toy, etc as listed above. Cement is hard to write in, but we were able to do initials with aquarium rocks. Let set. Cover with water to cure according to package directions. Let these set for a few days before removing from the tins. These can be buried in the garden as stepping stones, left out on the deck, or anywhere outside. Once hard, they are quite durable!

Brooches to Brag About
Who needs to show off diamonds when you've got heirloom jewels like these? When my kids each gave one to their great-grandmother to wear on her coat, she was thrilled. Now she has the excuse she needed to talk about her great-grandchildren.

MATERIALS
Bottle cap
Needle-nose pliers
Pin backing (available at craft stores)
Photo
White glue or clear glaze (available at craft stores)

To make your pin, use needle-nose pliers to bend out and flatten the rim of a bottle cap. Then your children can glue a pin backing to the cap. Let them decorate the inside edge of the cap--my kids colored it with nail polish and glued on glitter. Then they can trace a quarter around a photo of their choice and cut it out. The next step is to glue the picture in the center of the bottle cap and coat it with clear glaze or white glue that dries clear.

Cameo Necklace

Mom: Want to show off a photo of the very one who makes you an eligible celebrant of this springtime holiday? This necklace works like an open-faced locket: nostalgia and jewelry all in one.

Kids: This thoughtful present couldn't be simpler. It's crafted from a metal-rimmed key tag, a pretty ribbon -- and your photo, of course!

CRAFT MATERIALS:

Baby picture
Metal-rimmed key tag (or marking tag)
Glue
Glitter
Ribbon

Time needed: 30 Minutes or Less

1. Color-copy a favorite baby picture, reducing it to fit a metal-rimmed key tag (also called play or marking tags; available at Staples and art supply stores). Cut out the picture and use a glue stick to adhere it to the tag, then use the glue stick to add glitter or other decorations, such as a tiny bow. Loop a length of thin ribbon through the tag's hole or ring (you could also loop several tags along the same ribbon for a multicharm necklace), then tie the ends of the ribbon together.

Spoonful of Love Craft

What you will need:
Wooden or plastic spoons
paint
Hershey Kisses
netting material
cellophane or colored plastic wrap
silk flowers
ribbon
card stock

What to do:

Print out the pattern onto colored card stock. Cut out the hearts and punch a hole in the upper left side of the hearts.
Paint the wooden spoons or use plastic spoons.
Place two or three kisses on the cup of the spoon and place the spoon cup in the middle of a square of of material or plastic wrap. Bring the material up and over the spoon and tie it with a ribbon or lace. Make sure you attach the heart card to the lace or ribbon before you tie it. Add some silk flowers.

Flower Ribbon Pin Craft

What you will need:
Ribbon (about 1 1/2” wide)
florist wire
green Chenille Stems
pin back or magnet
buttons, pompoms or fun foam...

What to do:

Using the florist wire, punch a hole in the ribbon on one side. Continue weaving the wire in and out down one side of the ribbon bunching up the ribbon as you go. When you have enough ribbon on the wire to form a flower, cut the ribbon and bring the two ends of the ribbon together. Wind the ends of the wire around each other and cut off any excess. Glue a button, pompom or fun foam shape to the center of the flower. Wind a green Chenille Stem to form a stem and leaves and glue the stem to the back of the flower. To finish, glue a pin back or magnet to the back of the flower.

Chinese Lantern

http://www.***********.com/craftidea.asp?craftID=646

Quick and easy to make, these Chinese lanterns are attractive on their own or decorated. They also make a fun rainy day project to brighten up your child's day. Adult assistance may be required. Time 10 minutes

Tools
pencil
eraser
paper plate
paint brush
stapler
scissors
ruler

Supplies
construction paper 1 sheet 12" x 18"
tempera paint
glue stick

Step By Step Instructions

1. Fold a piece of any color 12" x 18" construction paper in half lengthwise.

2. Make cuts along the folded edge of the paper starting 1" in from the end and extending to within 1½" from the open edges of the piece of paper. Adults can make this easier for children by using a ruler and pencil to mark off 1" intervals and even drawing lines for them to cut along. If there are any pencil marks visible after they are done cutting along the lines they can be carefully erased.

3. Unfold the paper and loosely circle the ends around until they meet again to create the lantern shape. Overlap the ends by 1".

4. Staple the ends together at the top and the bottom of the lantern. You could also attach the ends together by spreading a line of glue from the glue along one end and press the other end over it. It will adhere quickly and you can continue working on it while it dries. White glue is not recommended because of the drying time.

5. Measure and cut a 12" x 1½" strip of a different color of construction paper (you could use the same color as the lantern if you like).

6. Line up the ends of the handles on the inside of the lantern so they are directly across from each other. When you are satisfied with the positioning, attach them to the lantern with your stapler or glue stick.

7. Squeeze the desired paint colors onto a paper plate and the children can get creative decorating their dimensional paper lantern.

Button Bouquet Brooches

http://home.howstuffworks.com/kids-pins3.htm

Create button bouquet brooches out of old buttons. The whimsical bouquets bring colorful results and happy smiles to the faces of those lucky enough to receive your bouquet.

What You'll Need:

2 green chenille stems 12 inches each
5 beautiful buttons
12 inches ribbon, 3/4 inch wide
3/4-inch pin back

Tools:

Scissors
Ruler
Needle nose pliers
Glue gun
Glue sticks

Step One: Cut the chenille stems into 4-inch lengths.
Step Two: For flat buttons, slip a stem through a button hole, going from the back and then through the front to the back again. Twist the stem tightly at the back using the needle-nose pliers. For post-style buttons, twist the stem through the hole, then add a drop of hot glue to hold the button so it faces forward.

Step Three: Gather the 5 chenille stems together and wrap them tightly with the last 4-inch chenille stem. Trim the ends of the wrapped stem.

Step Four: Bend the button flowers gracefully to make a flat bouquet. Pull some of the flower stems shorter, leaving others longer. Trim the bottom of the stems. Tie the ribbon in a bow around the center of your bouquet.

Step Five: Glue a pin back to the back of the bouquet.

Wine Cork Trivets/Hot Plates -- you can use a wood picture frame from the dollar store instead of building it completely from scratch!

Supplies Needed:
Approx 50 Wine Corks (you can purchase them here)
2' x 2' Sheet Of Poplar Or Oak 1/4" Plywood
6' piece of 3/4" Wood Trim
Wood Stain
1 Yard Of Satin Ribbon
Gorilla Glue
Saw & Wood Clamps
Here's how to make this wine cork wreath:
Step 1: Cut 4 pieces of 3/4" wood trim so that the outside edge of the pieces are 8 1/2" in length.
Cut the pieces on a 45 degree angle to make the outer frame of the trivet.
The inside edge should be 7" after the cut is made.
Step 2: Cut your 1/4" plywood into an 8 1/2" perfect square. This will be used as the foundation of your trivet so you have something to glue the corks onto. Step 3: Using a strong glue (we used Gorilla Glue), attach the 4 moldings onto the plywood square.
Be sure the edges of the frame are flush with the plywood base to give a smooth finish. You may want to use some wood clamps to hold the wood in place while the glue sets.
Your trivet should look like the one to the left.
Step 4: Once the glue dries, you can stain the frame to match your cabinet color in your kitchen or use your choice of stain colors and/or paints.
Step 5: Using the same Gorilla Glue, begin attaching the wine corks to the base. Gorilla glue works well because it "foams" up a bit and wraps around the corks nicely.
We used an alternating pattern to give a unique appearance.
Step 6: Here is how your trivet will look once all the corks have been glued on.
Step 7: Next, you can make a smaller trivet using the exact same steps as explained in steps 1 through 6 above.
The only different is the size of the frame edge and base plywood. We used a
6 3/4" perfect square piece of plywood on the bottom and the wood trim was cut on a 45 degree angle measuing
6 3/4" on the outside.
Step 8: Once the glue on the second cork trivet dries, you can stack it on top of the larger trivet you made earlier.
Step 9: Tie a nice bow around the two trivets and present your wine cork trivet gift to someone you care about!

Inspiration Board + how to.

I decided 2009 was the year for me to have an inspiration board. I’ve seen them all over the place, I love them and I’ve wanted one of my own for a long time now. I’m a fairly crafty person, so I thought I’d just throw some materials together and see what I came up with. I’m really pleased with the result.

Materials:

Piece of fiberboard
Heavy-duty home decorating fabric
Ribbon
Quilt Batting
Staple Gun + staples

First I bought a piece of fiberboard from Home Depot for around $3.50 and had it cut to the size specifications I needed, {I measured the wall next to my desk beforehand so I knew exactly how much space I had to work with**. I believe the board was 4’ x 6’ so I have plenty leftover to do a board for my daughter’s room.

Next I went to my local fabric store and selected some beautiful fabric. I’ve seen Inspiration Boards with plain backgrounds, but I wanted mine a little sussied up so I went with a really pretty home décor fabric in a color that I love {green**. I think I got maybe ½ yard, and it was on sale so it cost me about $4. I bought some ribbon in the same fabric store so I could see how the colors looked together {great, if I may say so** and I was off.

I think the ribbon was around $2. I also picked up some batting meant for a Christmas tree skirt; {it was on clearance for something like .20 cents** but any quilt batting will do. So all in all I was out less than $10 for the whole project. And it’s custom made so I love it. Easy peasy.

1. Lay the fiberboard on a flat surface. You’re going to be doing some fabric stretching and stapling so you want it to be a sturdy flat surface.

2. Wrap a layer of batting around the board. Stretch it really tight across the board and start stapling away!

3. I wrapped two layers of batting around the board because I wanted mine to have a little dimension but you can do anything you’d like. It’s your inspiration board after all.

4. Now that the board is fully batting-ed, lay it down in the center of the fabric. Play with the positioning a little, to make sure you have enough fabric to go all the way around the board.

5. Pull the fabric around the back of the board until it’s really taut and start stapling. I stapled all over the back about every half-inch or so because I wanted the fabric to really stay put.

6. Now that you’ve got the fabric on, pull out your pretty ribbon. This is where the creative license really comes in. You’re going to want experiment a little with laying the ribbon across the board before you do any cutting. Just to see what kind of pattern you want. You can do a grid of squares, or do slanted rectangles like I did. It doesn’t really matter, just as long as you have intersections where the ribbon meets so you can tuck in all your photos & inspirations.

7. Once you have your ribbon laid out the way you want, cut it into pieces to be stapled. Make sure the pieces of ribbon are long enough to go around the back of the board at least a few inches. If you want, you can dab hot glue where the ribbon meets the back of the board before you staple. I’d still use a staple though because the ribbon needs to be able to hold up all your little mementos and you don’t want it falling down on the job. Pull it really taut before stapling.

{Also, depending how you’re going to be hanging your board, you might want to save a length of ribbon to use as your hanger.** Make your pattern of ribbon and voila! You’re done. Unless of course you’re going to hang your board with a piece of ribbon. In which case you need to create a “hanger” out of ribbon. Just attach it the same way you did with the other ribbon, with glue and staples.

Now you’re really done.

Now hang it on the wall somewhere you can see it every day, and tuck in your happy little mementos. Enjoy!
