Personal Stone Tile Coasters with Iron on transfers

There is really nothing like a personalized holiday gift and what better gift than something that is useful as it is beautiful. Coasters are not traditionally thought of as a glamorous gift for the holidays but make them special with images of loved ones or favorite paintings and you've got a gift that will be proudly displayed year round. A surefire conversation piece every living room deserves.

What You'll Need:

Tumbled Stone Tiles
Cork Sheeting
White Glue
Iron-On Transfers
INK JET Printer
Iron

Directions:

1. Get your hands on some tumbled stone tile. I love travertine stone for it's antique roman feel and austere coolness. Any type of stone with a smooth surface will do. If you know anyone who has just redone a bathroom in stone, they will certainly have some floating around or sometimes, tile stores give samples away for free if you ask, (especially if you say you're redoing your bathroom).
2. Glue a square of cork sheeting to the back of the stone coaster with white glue. Make sure the sheeting doesn't show by making it about 1/8th of an inch smaller all around than the tile.
3. Print out images that you want to apply to your coasters. The coasters are 4" x 4" and the iron-on paper is 8.5" x 11" so four images will fit very nicely onto one page. The iron-on transfer paper is fairly expensive so don't waste it! Or at least if you do, don't tell the Diva.
4. Cut your images out and iron them onto the tiles face down for about one minute. This is tricky because if you iron them for too short a time the image won't stick but will be perfectly intact, if you iron them for too long, the image will start to break up. So you might want to practice on a spare tile using the excess paper to test your iron's heat to time ratio.
5. I know, I know...I'm a curious and impatient person too so no one is more anxious than me to peel off the backing and see my work first hand but wait! If you peel back the backing too soon you risk removing part of the image. So, hands off! Let it cool down first, wait about fifteen minutes before attempting the grand unveiling.

You can get samples of the tyles here at Home Depot and Lowes. I think I'll stop by and get some this weekend.
