These make lovely citrus candles. I found this in a local paper awhile back.
Materials:
# Fruits (any kind that appeals to your sense of smell: limes, lemons, oranges, grapefruit, etc.)
# 1 bag of leftover candle wax (I shred up the stuff that doesn't burn off for faster melting)
# Wick (I used the wick I bought at a craft store when I made beeswax candles)
# Paring knife or melon ball scooper
# Muffin Tray (if you can get the largest muffin size possible, this will work out better for the bigger fruits should you use a grapefruit)
# Paper towel
Instructions:
1. Cut the fruit in halves (width-wise for round fruit, length-wise for oval or irregular fruit shapes).
2. Scoop out the fruit guts from each rind with the paring knife or melon baller.
3. Dry the insides of the fruit rinds with the paper towels. (You may need to set them aside for a few minutes to air dry as well, but you don't want them to become too hard or you won't be able to smoosh the halves in the muffin tray.)
4. Cut wicks to the height of each fruit half, leaving a bit of extra length to hold up straight while pouring the wax into the fruit half.
5. Using the paring knife, cut a small hole in the middle or bottom of each rind to insert the wick through; make each wick long enough to stick out about 1/8".
6. Arrange the skins in the muffin tray. (Ideally you don't want the rinds to be able to move while you are pouring the wax into them, so it's best to smoosh them down into the tray holes a bit.)
7. In a small to medium sized pot, melt the wax shavings on a high setting till it becomes a clear liquid.
8. Hold each wick straight up from the fruit half as you slowly pour the wax into each rind.
9. Let the fruit halves stand to cool.
10. Trim the extra wick length to about 1/4" from the top of the candles.
Tip: The votives can be stored in a freezer until you are ready to burn them.
Tip: If you run out of wick or decide you don't want to burn the citrus votive, you can make one like I did as just a citrus scent bomb. The smell should last for up to three weeks, and will leave small spaces like a bathroom smelling fresh without having to burn the candle. Best of all, when it's done, you can melt down the wax and strain out the fruit rind to start all over again.
