homemade heating pads (how to?)

I want to make a couple of homemade heating pads for my girls. I know how to make the pad, but do I have to use a certain kind of rice? does it have to be brown or anything like that?

I have always used regular, plain, uncooked, long grain white rice, not minute rice. the fresher the better
