Take the "trick" out of Halloween costume-making this year, with our six designs that use everyday materials and our easy-to-follow directions. From dapper ducks to bold boxers, there's a costume to suit every age.
DAPPER DUCKS
When Mrs. Mallard marched her brood to the Public Garden in MAKE WAY FOR DUCKLINGS, she caused quite a commotion. In these just-ducky costumes, you and your family can do the same this Halloween, undoubtedly quacking up every household you visit.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
White baseball hat, 1/2 yard of orange felt, scissors, glue stick, black felt, 2 large white pom-poms, 2 sheets of orange construction paper, 2 self-adhesive Velcro strips, 2 large orange socks, polyfil batting, white cloth tape or duct tape, white sweatshirt (two sizes too big), 1/3 yard of yellow felt, 1 yard of white felt, orange leggings, white turtleneck and sneakers.
THE DUCK CAP
Roughly trace the shape of the baseball hat visor onto orange felt twice, with a 1-inch margin around the front and sides. Cut out the shapes, then glue them to the top and underside of the visorwith the rounded edges slightly overlapping the front of the visor. Cut out four 1/2 inch-diameter black felt circles. Glue two of the circles to the visor for nostrils and the other two to the white pom-poms. Glue the pom-poms to the front of the hat for eyes.

DUCK FEET
Trace around each sneaker onto orange felt leaving a 1-inch margin; then cut out the tracings, making three webbed toes in the front of each foot. To add extra stiffness (optional), back the felt with orange construction paper. Gently fold the feet in half lengthwise and cut an asterisk shape into the back center of each foot, leaving a 3/4 inch-margin around the opening. Apply Velcro strips to the underside of the duck feet and the tops of the orange socks.
DUCK BODY AND WINGS
Shape polyfil into a thick cylindrical shape as wide as your "duck's" waist. Tape the stuffing inside the back of the sweatshirt. Cut three tail-feathers from the felt (ours are about 12 inches long). Fold the top 3 inches of each feather in half and tuck into the sweatpant waistband. To make a wing, fold a rectangle (ours is about 21 by 8) of white felt in half. Trace a simple wing shape onto the felt and cut it out, leaving the folded edge uncut. Adhere the tips of the wing together with double-sided tape or a glue stick. Be sure to leave a large enough sleeve for your child to slip his arm through. Repeat for the second wing.
PUTTING IT TOGETHER
Have your child wear the orange leggings, white turtleneck (tucked in at waist) and duck feet. Next, have him put on shoes (first) with socks over them. Finally, put on the sweatshirt and hat. And make way for ducklings.
GRIM GRANNY
This easy-to-make optical illusion is so weirdly convincing, friends and family will be doing double takes all night long (is that one person or two?). If your child would rather be a baby on the back of a monster or a ghoul, simply substitute a long coat or oversize blazer for the dress and the appropriate over-the-head mask.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
Backpack, newspaper, T-shirt or black turtleneck (depending on neckline of dress), tights or socks, loose-fitting, long-sleeved black dress (at least three sizes too big but not so long that your child could trip), 1 sheer nylon stocking, fiberfill, over-the-head mask, tape, 2 googly eyes, 6 diaper pins, pair of black knee-highs, child's sleeper pajamas (size 12 to 18 months), one pair of mittens, baby-style bonnet, shoes, cane, purse and pacifier (optional).
OLD LADY
Stuff the backpack with newspaper. Have your child put on the T-shirt or turtleneck, tights and stuffed backpack. Next, have her put the dress on over the backpack.
THE MASK
Fill the nylon stocking with fiberfill, then put it inside the mask to create a full head. Stick a loop of tape to the back of each googly eye and adhere it to the stuffed nylon in the mask through the eyeholes. Using two diaper pins, attach the knee-highs to the back of the mask and tie them loosely around your child's neck just below her chin.
THE BABY
Stuff the pajamas and mittens with fiberfill or newspaper. Pin the mittens to the pajama sleeves, then open the pajamas to the middle of the chest and snap around your child's neck.
TIP: To loosen the fit around the neck, thread ribbon through both sides of the collar and tie the ends together. Pin the pajamas to the back of the dress.
PUTTING IT TOGETHER
Have your child complete the look with the bonnet, shoes, cane and purse. Pin the pacifier, through the ring, to one of the mittens.
KID'S BEST FRIEND
You won't have to remind your child to walk the dog this Halloween with this role-reversing pair of costumes. Smartly dressed in suit and tie, your little gent will have a howling good time taking his pretend pooch for a walk around the block.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
FOR THE LITTLE MAN: Button-down shirt, pants, sports jacket, shoes, tie, eyebrow pencil, old briefcase and fedora.
FOR THE DOG: 3 white tube socks, fiberfill, two 18-inch floral wires, scissors, belt, 2/3 yard of black faux fur (or black felt), glue gun or double-sided tape, 1/4 yard of white or spotted faux fur (or white felt), self-adhesive Velcro, black construction paper, permanent marker, sweatsuit, black turtleneck, black sneakers, eyebrow pencil, large dog collar and dog leash.
LITTLE MAN
Have your child put on the shirt, pants, jacket, shoes and tie. Draw a thin mustache with the eyebrow pencil. Accessorize with briefcase (put a plastic bag inside for trick-or-treating candy) and fedora.
DOG'S TAIL
Stuff one tube sock with fiberfill. Twist the floral wires together and thread through the top of the sock, tip to toe. Bend the wire gently through the toe fabric and twist back in to prevent it from slipping out of the sock. Cut two small lengthwise slits in the sock top and thread the belt through. Wrap the wire at the opening of the sock tightly around the belt. If desired, cut out and glue black faux fur onto the tip of the tail.
DOG'S HEAD AND PAWS
Cut a 3-inch-wide strip of white fur or felt to fit around Dad's head and attach strips of adhesive Velcro to fasten. Cut two ears from black construction paper - shape them like a flat-topped bowling pin, approximately 13 inches high and 4 1/2 inches wide. Glue the paper ears to the back side of a piece of black fur or felt and cut them out. Tape the smaller ends of the ears, fur side up, to the inside of the headband. Wear the headband so the ears flop out over the top. To make the paws, put a piece of cardboard inside a sock, then draw a paw print with permanent marker and remove the cardboard. Repeat with the other sock.
DOG'S BODY
Cut out a large black fur or felt oval with a 3-inch tab at the top. Attach the oval to the front of the sweatshirt with double-sided tape, then fold the tab inside the sweatshirt collar. If desired, cut out ankle and wrist "cuffs" from the fur or felt and attach with Velcro.
PUTTING IT TOGETHER
Have Dad put on the turtleneck, sweatsuit, sneakers, tail and paw socks. Draw a nose and freckles on Dad with the eyebrow pencil. Accessorize with the headband, cuffs, collar and leash.
