Thumbs up Wickedly easy Halloween costumes - Six no-sew costume designs

Six no-sew costume designs from FamilyFun=1]
by Jodi Butler

http://www.family.msn.com/tool/artic...3_easycostumes

Take the "trick" out of Halloween costume-making this year, with our six designs that use everyday materials and our easy-to-follow directions. From dapper ducks to bold boxers, there's a costume to suit every age.

DAPPER DUCKS

When Mrs. Mallard marched her brood to the Public Garden in MAKE WAY FOR DUCKLINGS, she caused quite a commotion. In these just-ducky costumes, you and your family can do the same this Halloween, undoubtedly quacking up every household you visit.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

White baseball hat, 1/2 yard of orange felt, scissors, glue stick, black felt, 2 large white pom-poms, 2 sheets of orange construction paper, 2 self-adhesive Velcro strips, 2 large orange socks, polyfil batting, white cloth tape or duct tape, white sweatshirt (two sizes too big), 1/3 yard of yellow felt, 1 yard of white felt, orange leggings, white turtleneck and sneakers.

THE DUCK CAP

Roughly trace the shape of the baseball hat visor onto orange felt twice, with a 1-inch margin around the front and sides. Cut out the shapes, then glue them to the top and underside of the visorwith the rounded edges slightly overlapping the front of the visor. Cut out four 1/2 inch-diameter black felt circles. Glue two of the circles to the visor for nostrils and the other two to the white pom-poms. Glue the pom-poms to the front of the hat for eyes.

DUCK FEET

Trace around each sneaker onto orange felt leaving a 1-inch margin; then cut out the tracings, making three webbed toes in the front of each foot. To add extra stiffness (optional), back the felt with orange construction paper. Gently fold the feet in half lengthwise and cut an asterisk shape into the back center of each foot, leaving a 3/4 inch-margin around the opening. Apply Velcro strips to the underside of the duck feet and the tops of the orange socks.

DUCK BODY AND WINGS

Shape polyfil into a thick cylindrical shape as wide as your "duck's" waist. Tape the stuffing inside the back of the sweatshirt. Cut three tail-feathers from the felt (ours are about 12 inches long). Fold the top 3 inches of each feather in half and tuck into the sweatpant waistband. To make a wing, fold a rectangle (ours is about 21 by 8) of white felt in half. Trace a simple wing shape onto the felt and cut it out, leaving the folded edge uncut. Adhere the tips of the wing together with double-sided tape or a glue stick. Be sure to leave a large enough sleeve for your child to slip his arm through. Repeat for the second wing.

PUTTING IT TOGETHER

Have your child wear the orange leggings, white turtleneck (tucked in at waist) and duck feet. Next, have him put on shoes (first) with socks over them. Finally, put on the sweatshirt and hat. And make way for ducklings.

GRIM GRANNY

This easy-to-make optical illusion is so weirdly convincing, friends and family will be doing double takes all night long (is that one person or two?). If your child would rather be a baby on the back of a monster or a ghoul, simply substitute a long coat or oversize blazer for the dress and the appropriate over-the-head mask.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

Backpack, newspaper, T-shirt or black turtleneck (depending on neckline of dress), tights or socks, loose-fitting, long-sleeved black dress (at least three sizes too big but not so long that your child could trip), 1 sheer nylon stocking, fiberfill, over-the-head mask, tape, 2 googly eyes, 6 diaper pins, pair of black knee-highs, child's sleeper pajamas (size 12 to 18 months), one pair of mittens, baby-style bonnet, shoes, cane, purse and pacifier (optional).

OLD LADY

Stuff the backpack with newspaper. Have your child put on the T-shirt or turtleneck, tights and stuffed backpack. Next, have her put the dress on over the backpack.

THE MASK

Fill the nylon stocking with fiberfill, then put it inside the mask to create a full head. Stick a loop of tape to the back of each googly eye and adhere it to the stuffed nylon in the mask through the eyeholes. Using two diaper pins, attach the knee-highs to the back of the mask and tie them loosely around your child's neck just below her chin.

THE BABY

Stuff the pajamas and mittens with fiberfill or newspaper. Pin the mittens to the pajama sleeves, then open the pajamas to the middle of the chest and snap around your child's neck.

TIP: To loosen the fit around the neck, thread ribbon through both sides of the collar and tie the ends together. Pin the pajamas to the back of the dress.

PUTTING IT TOGETHER

Have your child complete the look with the bonnet, shoes, cane and purse. Pin the pacifier, through the ring, to one of the mittens.

KID'S BEST FRIEND

You won't have to remind your child to walk the dog this Halloween with this role-reversing pair of costumes. Smartly dressed in suit and tie, your little gent will have a howling good time taking his pretend pooch for a walk around the block.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

FOR THE LITTLE MAN: Button-down shirt, pants, sports jacket, shoes, tie, eyebrow pencil, old briefcase and fedora.

FOR THE DOG: 3 white tube socks, fiberfill, two 18-inch floral wires, scissors, belt, 2/3 yard of black faux fur (or black felt), glue gun or double-sided tape, 1/4 yard of white or spotted faux fur (or white felt), self-adhesive Velcro, black construction paper, permanent marker, sweatsuit, black turtleneck, black sneakers, eyebrow pencil, large dog collar and dog leash.

LITTLE MAN

Have your child put on the shirt, pants, jacket, shoes and tie. Draw a thin mustache with the eyebrow pencil. Accessorize with briefcase (put a plastic bag inside for trick-or-treating candy) and fedora.

DOG'S TAIL

Stuff one tube sock with fiberfill. Twist the floral wires together and thread through the top of the sock, tip to toe. Bend the wire gently through the toe fabric and twist back in to prevent it from slipping out of the sock. Cut two small lengthwise slits in the sock top and thread the belt through. Wrap the wire at the opening of the sock tightly around the belt. If desired, cut out and glue black faux fur onto the tip of the tail.

DOG'S HEAD AND PAWS

Cut a 3-inch-wide strip of white fur or felt to fit around Dad's head and attach strips of adhesive Velcro to fasten. Cut two ears from black construction paper - shape them like a flat-topped bowling pin, approximately 13 inches high and 4 1/2 inches wide. Glue the paper ears to the back side of a piece of black fur or felt and cut them out. Tape the smaller ends of the ears, fur side up, to the inside of the headband. Wear the headband so the ears flop out over the top. To make the paws, put a piece of cardboard inside a sock, then draw a paw print with permanent marker and remove the cardboard. Repeat with the other sock.

DOG'S BODY

Cut out a large black fur or felt oval with a 3-inch tab at the top. Attach the oval to the front of the sweatshirt with double-sided tape, then fold the tab inside the sweatshirt collar. If desired, cut out ankle and wrist "cuffs" from the fur or felt and attach with Velcro.

PUTTING IT TOGETHER

Have Dad put on the turtleneck, sweatsuit, sneakers, tail and paw socks. Draw a nose and freckles on Dad with the eyebrow pencil. Accessorize with the headband, cuffs, collar and leash.

FISHERMAN and DOGFISH

He may not be old enough to captain a ship, but netting treats won't be a trick for this salty fisherman. Bright and easy to assemble, this costume is practical for chilly October nights. And if you've got an agreeable family pooch, he can wear our easily detachable fin and play your child's prized catch.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

FOR THE FISHERMAN: Three 24-inch squares of yellow gift wrap, glue stick, masking tape, 1 sheet of sticky-back felt, skein of gray yarn, 2 feet of elastic string, raincoat and pants and rubber boots.

FOR THE DOGFISH: Felt, scissors, tacky glue, foil, colored markers, corrugated cardboard, strip of self-adhesive Velcro, dog harness and dog leash.

GLOUCESTER HAT

Glue two sheets of wrapping paper together, yellow side down.

TIP: Apply glue in a circle in the center of the sheets and along the outer edges so the brim is even. To form the crown, gently press the papers on your child's head, edges around the sides of her face, and wrap the papers with masking tape two to three times at eyebrow level.

THE BEARD

Cut the felt into a beard shape and lay it on a flat surface, sticky side up. Apply 2-inch pieces of yarn to the sticky side until the surface is covered.

TIP: For a very full beard, glue yarn to the back of the beard along the bottom edge. Make a small hole on each side of the beard. Tie elastic string to the holes, so that it fits snugly but comfortably over the top of your child's head like a headband.

DOGFISH

Draw a pair of matching fin shapes onto felt (the fin is 11 by 9 inches ) and cut them out. Glue the curved edges together, leaving the bottom edge unglued. If desired, decorate with "scales" (we glued on foil circles and colored them with markers). Using a pencil, trace the felt fin onto cardboard. Cut out two matching cardboard fins, exactly 1/2 inch smaller on the sides and 1 inch longer on the bottom than the felt fins. On each fin, fold the bottom 1 inch of cardboard out and crease up. Glue the fins together and slip the felt fin over the cardboard. Cut out a cardboard rectangle, 2 inches wide and about 6 inches long. Attach Velcro to the bottom two corners and sides of the cardboard rectangle and to the bottom of each fin flap. Put the harness on your dog. Place the cardboard rectangle on the dog's back under the harness straps (make sure there's room for the leash to attach to the harness). Now duct-tape the harness to the rectangle. Finally, attach the leash and stick on the fin with Velcro.

PUTTING IT TOGETHER

Have your child put on the raincoat and pants, rubber boots, beard and Gloucester hat. Accessorize with a dogfish and fresh catch.

MOVIE STARS

Fashion trends may come and go, but as any movie star knows, true glamour is never out of style. The centerpiece of this costume is a natty wrapping paper hat, oversized enough for any Hollywood ego. A dress-up box or trip to the thrift store can provide the rest: sunglasses, a killer dress and sparkling faux gems. And don't forget the most important accessory of all a pack of equally glamorous pals.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

Glue stick, three 25- to 30-inch square sheets of wrapping paper or tissue paper, masking tape, scissors, assorted hat decorations (crepe paper, ribbon, fake flowers, gift bows, pipe cleaners, fabric and feathers), and assorted dress-up clothes (including fake jewelry, sunglasses and fancy shoes).

THE HATS

Glue the three sheets of paper together in the center. Have the print side of the bottom sheet facedown, so the underside of the hat will be patterned too. To form the hat's crown, center the paper on top of your child's head and gently press the edges of the paper down around the sides of her head. Wrap masking tape around the crown (at eyebrow level) two to three times.

TIP: For a taller hat, place a ball of newspaper on top of your child's head before forming the hat. Create the brim by rolling the paper edges up or under and taping in place, or by trimming the edges. Decorate with flowers, bows, ribbons, crepe paper, pipe cleaners, fabric scraps, feathers or plastic tiaraswhatever accessorizes your child's party dress best!

PUTTING IT TOGETHER

After putting on her party dress, jewelry, sunglasses, and shoes, your child can don her new chapeau and get ready for the rave reviews.

TIP: To dress up plain shoes, stick colored gift bows or tissue paper flowers to the tops of the toes with a loop of tape.

THE BOXERS

If your child really wants to look like a knockout this Halloween, here's the perfect getup. With a foil champ's belt and sock boxing gloves, all your pugilist needs to complete his look is a gym bag for collecting trick-or-treat candy.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

One pair of red adult sport socks, fiberfill, needle and thread or 2 safety pins, black yarn, 1 sheet of poster board, child's belt, corrugated cardboard, aluminum foil, duct tape, black permanent marker, athletic shorts, socks, sneakers, bathrobe, athletic tape and black face paint (optional).

THE GLOVES

Form the socks into the shape of boxing gloves, using the heel of the sock for the thumb and the toe of the socks for the fingers. Stuff with fiberfill, then tuck the ends of the socks inside the gloves to cover the stuffing and form cuffs. Sew or pin the thumb and fingers together. Attach the gloves together with enough black yarn to drape around your child's shoulders (either by sewing or with stripes of black tape).

THE BELT

From the poster board, cut a rectangle with rounded ends that fits most of the way around your child's waist (the ones here are 5 by 17 inches). Cut a vertical slit on each end of the poster board and slide his belt through (he'll wear the buckle in back). Cut a 6-inch circle out of corrugated cardboard, wrap with foil, and secure on the back with duct tape. Write "Champ" on the front of the circle with the marker. Duct-tape the circle to the poster board belt.

PUTTING IT TOGETHER

Have your child put on the shorts, socks, sneakers, robe and champ belt. Drape the gloves around his shoulders, then wrap athletic tape around his hands. For the Rocky Balboa look, add a black eye with face paint.

~*~Bat Bells~*~

Need:

small black paper cup
sheet of black construction paper
string
bell
2 "googly" eyes
white paper
stapler
glue

Punch a small hole in the bottom of the black cup (easily found at party stores in the "over the hill" birthday section). Tie small bell on the end of yarn and string it up through the hole in cup (bell should be on the inside of the cup). Tie knots on both sides of hole so string doesn't slip through. Holding cup upside down, glue two eyes toward the bottom (the rim) of the cup. Cut out two small triangles for the bats fangs and glue or tape to the inside of the cup below the eyes so that they just show below the rim. Fold black construction paper in half and cut out one bat wing. Unfold to get the pair and center on back of cup and staple. Hang and enjoy!
