I personally couldn't figure out how to crochet from a book or web site. I noticed that michaels had a crochet class that I could take and it worked out great. The one here you can take the class to learn the basics and when you want to learn more (or if you get stuck) you can sign up again.

I was taught basic crochet by my Mom (single crochet & double crochet) all the rest I taught myself by reading books that had patterns.

Michaels is a good place to start, learn the basics, and you will pick up the rest.

here is a site with stich guides:
http://www.stitchguide.com/stitches/crochet/index.html

and some sites that show you how to get started:

There are books with detailed diagrams. I don't crochet very often so I need one to refresh my memory on how to do the different stitches. Check your local library and get a book for beginners.

OK you made the chain the first row, now make the row long enough to cover a twin size bed for instance. Now when you turn around and go back over use the BACK of the chain thread at all times. This will make the most beautiful blanket ever. It gives it a ripple effect when it's finished.

Contact some of your local yarn shops. They will be more than happy to help you.

Amazon has a listing for "Crocheting For Dummies" but it hasn't been released yet so you can pre-order it. There are also computer programs and videos on crocheting.

Ahh! I'm a leftie and it took me YEARS to learn how to crochet decently. The best advice I can give is...don't give up!!! Keep practicing and it gets easier and easier! And once you've got it, you never forget, kinda like riding a bike.

I'm going through the same thing right now trying desparately to knit. Can't seem to get it down, I rip out more than I create......but I'm determined one day at the very least I'll have a hat or something to show for it.

There's also a "Knitting For Dummies" book. I've also seen several books with instructions just for left-handed people for both knitting and crocheting.

I gave my aunt the "Knitting for dummies" book last year for Christmas. She has done crochet for years. She gave up on this book! She said it was horrible. My mom gave her the book she used in high school to learn how to knit. Worked like a charm-as old as it was!. She now loves it more than crochet!
