Arrow Americana Picnic Tote

by Adrienne Franklin

A large tote for all your picnic needs includes 1 large outer pocket, 1 large inner pocket, and a divided inner pocket for flatware etc.
Seam Allowance: 1/2" used throughout. Read all instructions before beginning. Press carefully step-by-step.
Finished size: 15”x 15”x 6”
Pattern Level: Easy

Materials Needed:
1 1/4-yards red, white and blue patch print
3/4-yard red print with white stars
7/8-yard blue print with navy stars
3/4-yard polyester fleece
Matching thread, 6”x 15” piece of plastic canvas

Cutting
From patch print cut:
2 pieces 15”x 25”
1 piece 15”x 17”

From blue cut:
1 piece 22”x 37” (lining)
2 pieces 5”x 21” (handles) From red cut:
1 piece 22”x 37”

From fleece cut:
1 piece 22”x 37”
2 pieces 4” x 21”

Assembly:
1) Lay red 22”x 37” piece right side up on top of the fleece piece of the same size. Baste together around edges. This will be the outside of the bag. For the red outer bag and the lining the 22” edges will be referred to as the top edges and the 37” edges will be the side edges. Pockets: Fold each pocket in half crosswise, and stitch around edges leaving an opening for turning. Clip corners and trim seams. Turn right side out through opening. Press. Stitch opening closed. You will have 2 pockets 12”x 14” and 1 pocket 8”x 14”.

2) Pin 1 of the large pockets to the right side of red outer bag, positioning it 4” from each side edge and 4” from one of the top raw edges. Sew pocket to bag along side and bottom edges of pocket, stitching close to pocket edges. Fold bag in half crosswise right sides facing and pin together at sides. Stitch sides. To make lower bag corners refer to figure 1. With right sides facing match side seam to center of bag bottom as shown. Measure 3” down from corner and mark stitching line. Stitch across as shown. Trim seam and repeat for remaining corner.
3) Pin the remaining larger pocket to the right side of the blue lining piece positioning it 4” from each side edge and 4” from one of the top raw edges. Stitch in place as for previous pocket. Position flatware pocket on lining 6” from the remaining top edge and 4” from each side edge. Stitch pocket in place. Stitch divisions in pocket as shown in figure 2. Pin sides of lining right sides facing, and stitch. Stitch bottom corners of lining in the same manner as outer bag in step 2.

Handles: Center fleece handle pieces on the wrong side of each blue handle. Fold and press under 1/2"along each long edge of handle. See figure 3. Fold handles in half lengthwise wrong sides facing with folded edges together. Stitch close to both long edges as shown. Position handles on the right side of each top edge of the outer bag. Pin each end of handle about 2” from the bag center. Raw edges should be even. Baste handles in place.
For added support, insert plastic canvas piece into bottom of bag. Insert bag into lining right sides facing and stitch together along top edges leaving an opening for turning. Turn right side out through opening. Stitch opening closed. Topstitch close to top edges. Tote is complete.
