I have a painting question...Help! Christmas depends on this!!

I saw this WAY CUTE craft idea using a 6 cupcake pan. You paint the backside to look like 2 snowmen. Kinda like this>>>

0 0 ---head
0 0 middle body
0 0 bottom
But, anyways, my question is, do I need to prime/use a base on the pan before painting it?? I'm afraid that if I don't use some kind of base, the pan will rust from the liquid in the pain. Please help!! This is what all the families are getting for Christmas.

From what I know, if you use an aluminum pan, it won't rust. Try Gesso as a primer, maybe? I hope that is of SOME help to you my friend. Good luck!!!!!

Love and light!
