Materials needed: Several blocks of Black 042 Sculpey III Lace Doily or medallion (3" x 4" piece) Pearlex Polymer metallic powder or Rub n Buff (Pearlex is applied to raw clay; Rub n Buff is applied after baking) Sculpey Liquid Glaze, Satin Finish Brass candlesticks Brass switchplate Brass bowl Directions: Flatten each block of clay to approximately 4" x 5" x 1/8" thick, using a brayer rolling pin, or #1 setting on pasta machine. Sculpey III is recommended for this project because of its stretching ability. Center lace on top of one flattened sheet, leaving a border of clay. Press lace into clay and roll over several times with the brayer (or through pasta machine on #4 setting) to imprint lace design into sheet of clay. Gently pull lace off sheet of clay. Remove loose thread particles from clay, if necessary. Trim away excess clay. Carefully apply metallic powder over lace textured sheet by lightly dipping index finger into powder. Blow off excess powder before applying to clay with a light-touched, circling motion of the finger. Repeat this step until entire lace design is evident. Remember . . specks of this powder go a long way, and you want to retain the black background. Start with a sparse layer of powder and add layers until lace design is bold, shiny and beautiful!! Depending on size and shape of candlestick(s), cut sheet into several pieces. Drape and gently press one piece onto candlestick. Continue to apply pieces to candlestick, trimming and stretching clay (yes, stretching), as needed. Smooth seams and add a touch more powder. NOTE: Letting clay pieces overlap can be a most desirable eflect. Repeat for second candlestick. Determine areas to be covered on brass bowl and switchplates, and repeat the process. Bake pieces in oven at 275 degrees F (135 degrees C) for 15 minutes. Let cool completely. After pieces are completely cool, apply a few drops of liquid acrylic glaze with index finger. (Thin glaze slightly with water) Smooth glaze and let dry completely. NOTE: If you wish to use Rub n Buff instead of Pearlex, apply it sparingly after the brass pieces have been baked. ©Copyright 2001-2001 Ben Franklin Creative Crafts & Framing. All rights reserved
