Leah’s Garden
SUPPLIES:
• Clayboard Black 5" x 7"
• Scratch Knife
• Chalk
• Colored Inks (Optional)
• Clayboard Fixative
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Apply chalk to the back of the pattern. Use plain white chalk. Place the pattern on the Clayboard Black with the chalk side down and tape it in place. Trace over the guidelines with a pen or pencil.
2. Carefully remove the pattern. Using a scratch tool, lightly scratch over the chalk outline. Blow away residual chalk or wipe gently with a soft cloth. Rubbing too hard will cause the surface to smudge. (see illustration 1)
3. Begin scratching in lines following the contour and shape of the petals, wings, etc. This will define the flow of the objects in the drawing. (see illustration 2)
4. Using the contour lines from step #3 as a guide, fill in more lines so that the finished drawing appears gray and flat. (see illustration 3)
5. Continue scratching in more areas of light as shown in the wings of the butterfly and in the flower petals. This is called shading. To get white, use multiple lines. (see illustration 4)
6. Use colored India Inks™ to paint in color if desired. Don't be afraid to paint outside the lines. Color will disappear over the black areas for clean and precise painting**** add more dimension, scratch back into the colored areas to create highlights and volume.
7. To finish, seal finished artwork with Claybord Fixative and place into a frame! No glass is necessary!
