How to make Ribbon Roses
These can be used for favors, decoration or embellishments. Make them with or without stamens.
Use preferably 1 1/2"-2 " wide ribbon. Use wire edged ribbon.
Step 1. Cut desired length of ribbon.
Step 2. Fold it in half. Hold ribbon in your left hand with the pull string side facing your hand
Step 3. Fold back the end of ribbon to expose pull strings.
Step 4. With your right hand, firmly grasp both pull strings (these can be the wires in wired edged ribbons) and pull them. Ribbon will automatically gather in your palm.
Shirring a Ribbon Rose
Yardage:
Small rose: approximately 20"
Medium rose: 24" to 30"
Large rose 36" to 42"
Other materials needed: Pearl stamen (for the center of the ribbon rose) and floral tape.
The exact yardage you select will depend on the width and texture of the ribbon and the size rose you desire.
Step 1. Cut ribbon an gather it (follow basic instruction for "shirring ribbon" above).
Step 2. With shirred side down, hold one end of the gathered ribbon between your thumb and index fingers. Fold 1" down diagonally. Place pearl stamen on top of diagonal
Step 3. While holding the ribbon and the stamen in your left hand, start wrapping ribbon around the stamen (fig. 1). As you do so, slightly move the gathers towards the right , away from the stamen, in order to obtain a tight center in the rose.
Step 4. Continue wrapping the ribbon, incorporating more and more gathers. this will open the rose (fig.2). Continue until the ribbon is used up. Tie the two loose pull strings together and pull tight to secure the rose. TIE a SQUARE KNOT (see instructions below).
Step 5. Wrap floral tape at base of rose and along wire stem of stamen. To complete, arrange petals of rose as desired.
TIP: The pull string can be used for decorative purposes or for tying the rose to other components of your project. Remember that you control the fullness and appearance of the rose by the gathers. A tight looking rose needs only a few gathers. A more open rose will need more gathers.
Cabbage Rose
Yardage:
With a 1 1/2" ribbon, use approximately 24: length. With a 2" ribbon, use approximately 36" length.
Other materials: Pearl stamen (for center of ribbon rose) and floral tape.
Step 1. Take the desired length of shirring ribbon and gather it (see instructions above on "gathering"). Hold the ribbon with gathered edge toward palm of left hand.
Step 2. Working from left to right fold the ribbon in half, backwards and length wise.
Step 3. Follow directions for shirred rose, keeping the ribbon folded in half as you go. Keep gathers to a minimum. To finish, Tie with square knot (see below for square knot instructions).
To Make:
o Cut stems to 6" long. Arrange flower on bed of leaves. (use corsage rose leaves)
o Secure stems together with thin floral wire.

Working with all ribbon lengths combined, fold ribbon in half and wire in center with an 8" length of floral wire. Make random knots in all ribbon lengths alternating spacing. Set aside.
Wire the silk flowers and the buds to 8" lengths of 18 gauge floral wire. Cover any raw edges with floral tape.
Gather and wire all flowers and buds together. Insert lilies-of-the-valley where needed. Insert the loop wires from step 2 in the center of the bouquet. Add the knotted ribbons from step 3 to lower part of bouquet. Wire together, forming a handle.
