KEWL IDEA - Polymer 'Cool' Neck/Head Bands **AS SEEN ON TV**
Polymer 'Cool' Neck/Head Bands Straight Stitching using the sewing machine, stitching a tube of fabric and turning, finishing a raw edge by serging or turning and stitching, using a new product and learning about water absorption and evaporation. Materials Needed: Scissors Tape measure Serger/sewing machine 4" strip of fabric 45" long (actual length will depend on personal preference) Two Tablespoons of polymer granules. (Can be purchased at any home or garden store. Polymer granules are used in soil for moisture retention. A brand name to look for is "Soil Moist.") Directions to make this project: Cut one strip of fabric 4" wide from a fabric that is at least 45" wide. If you want to have a bow to tie use a 60" wide fabric. Fold the fabric strip in half lengthwise (the piece should be 4" by 22 1/2"). Mark the fold. This is the center back of the neckband. Open up the fabric, measure, and mark 7" on each side of the center back. Fold the fabric right sides together the width of the strip (the piece should now be 2" by 45".) Using a 5/8" seam, stitch between the marks. (There should be 14" stitched--7" on either side of center back.) The tail ends may be rounded or slanted to give a more finished look. Finish the edges and ends of the rest of the band by serging or turning and stitching. Press. Turn tube right side out and press. At one end of the tube, stitch to close, then double stitch for strength. At this point, you should have one end of the tube open. Carefully pour the polymer granules into the tube (about two tablespoons). Stitch the tube closed. Reinforce with another row of stitching. To use the cool neckband, soak in cold water for a few seconds. As the polymer granules soak up the water "mush" them around so the jelly spreads out equally along the tube. Tie around your neck for a "Cool Band." TIPS-- The polymer granules are used in gardening soil for water retention. The cool band can be refrigerated so it is more refreshing on a hot day. It can be soaked in cold water and used repeatedly. If too many polymer granules are used in the tube, the "jelly" will ooze through the fabric tube. Two tablespoons is all that is needed.

IDEA # 2
the eye pack and neck cooler...
The eye pack, you can use flax seed (that's what I use) or I've heard of using birdseed or corn. But you mix with essential oils. I use Peppermint, Lavender, Patchouli, and Chamomile. I heat mine in the microwave for about 1 min. The neck cooler, I found that if you put floral gel on the inside this works wonderful. But you only need to put 1/2-teaspoon of the stuff in it causes it expands so much. You can find the floral gel at Michael's. Hope this helps. -- Holly Roberson =O)

(short version)
Buy a knit headband.
Open the seam where they sewed it together. Put in gel stuff. Sew closed. which is what I will probably do... ![]()

MAYBE... sew on a section of velcro to make it easier to take on and off; instead of dragging the wet sweaty thing over your head...

I think this set of instructions may be a little clearer...
For making the "cooling" neckwear, you can make from various cotton fabric, broadcloth---check out your fabric store, look for such fun prints as tropically inspired or solids or, or, or... The length can vary (child vs. adult), but is basically long tube--take an eight inch width, fold over, stitch (a double seam is best). The ends tapered, but leave a small opening in center for turning and filling. The filling is the "gel" substance used for plants, found at nursery suppliers (Wal-Mart too). When filling inner tube, allow for expansion. i.e. ,do not overfill as gel absorbs water and expands. (Difficult to give exact measurement as size differs for head/neck/child/adult--common sense judgment) Simply soak "neckwear" in water (not freezer, but can refrigerate), tie around neck when active in warm weather, provides amazing cooling for long periods (is an "updated" old farm/field worker "trick" of wet handkerchief around neck....) Found some "imported" from Hawaii, great Hawaiian prints and a treasure from the tropics which really do the "job" of providing cooling. Use in walking, exercise, and gardening meanderings--highly recommend!
