I bought a beautiful recipe box at a craft show. It was painted white, and had what appeared to be real pansies on it. They were covered with a clear sealer. I would like to try doing this type of craft myself. Does anyone know what this is called, and can you tell me how to do this?

sounds to me like tole painting or decorative painting. I have taken several classes. The classes really helped me with shading and highlighting. That's what makes the designs look like more than just "coloring". I use patterns and I have made up some of my own designs.
There are numerous pattern books out there which you can just copy.
