Storing Easter Hats...

Hat Stands

I measured my girl's head and then blew up balloons just a little smaller than the head measurement. Then the paper strips and glue papier-mâché all over the balloon shapes about 3/8 inch thick were allowed to dry thoroughly allowing 1/2 inch bare spot to pop the balloon and pull it through. A 3/4-inch dowel in lengths of 1 ft., 18 inches and 15 inches were inserted in to the hole in each of the "heads" and glued with You Can Wash It Glue.
The dowel was placed in a wooden disk 5" in diameter purchased at a craft shop and glued in with Elmer's Carpenters Glue, as you should definitely use good wood glue. The "heads" were then covered in an assortment of ribbons, quilt patch pieces from the quilt basket and the little silk rosebuds from the sewing store. They were glued around the bottom of the head where it joined the dowel. Ribbons were
glued below the roses in a spiral fashion down the dowel to the base. More patches were glued on the base. These are colorful and effective and not top heavy and can be customized to go along with the theme of the girl's room. Three on a shelf or atop a chest of drawer really look "tight" as my niece tells me.
Now I want to try some in scraps of velvet for my bedroom.
Have fun with this glamorous way of recycling. Makes a good gift, too.

Homemade Hatboxes

I purchased papier-mâché boxes at the craft store when they were on sale. I then used left over wallpaper border and wrapped it around the bottom part (the part without the lid) of the box. You can use white craft glue or wallpaper paste to affix the border to the box. The borders I used were pre-pasted so I just wet them down and wrapped them around the bottom of the box. I used the craft glue for touch-ups. In one case, the border was taller than the box. I lined up the top of the border and the top lip of the box, cut slits in the paper around the bottom, and folded the excess under the bottom of the box. For the lid, I painted it with craft paint in a complementary color, pasted a cutout from the border on top, and then sealed it with a spray sealer.
On one, I glued a painted, wooden knob on top for an added touch.
The boxes are wonderful for storing all kinds of things and they match the decor of each room perfectly. I made some for my son's room to store his "junk" and used the sports team border I had decorated his room in. He loves them!
