Product Note
Patio Paint is a self-sealing exterior paint. No prior preparation is needed when working on wood. For other surfaces, follow directions on label. Patio Paints may be used on all porous surfaces such as concrete, terra cotta, wood, plaster, etc. Because of the self-sealing agents, they do not require a varnish upon completion.

Techniques

Spatter: dip an old toothbrush in thinned paint, hold the brush over the piece and run your fingers through the bristles to release paint.
Floating/Corner Loading: Dip a flat or angular brush into Clear Coat. Lightly press on a paper towel until the sheen leaves the bristles. Dip one corner of a brush into paint. Stroke the brush back and forth on the palette, blending until the color spreads evenly halfway across the width of the brush.
Highlighting: Can be done using the floating method described above or by drybrushing (see definition below). Highlight using a lighter color.
Dry Brushing: Touch the tips of brush bristles into paint and wipe excess color off onto a paper towel. Using very light pressure, skim the brush over the surface, building up color gradually.

Transferring Patterns

Lay tracing paper over pattern and draw the basic lines. Lay this tracing on the surface to be painted. Slip graphite paper between the tracing and the surface. Tape to secure. Trace with a pencil to transfer the design. Do not trace details until after basecoating has dried.

Painting Instructions

Trace pattern and transfer to pot using graphite paper.
Mix Cloud White and Woodland Brown to make beige. Paint pot rim, birdhouse and pole on right, using flat brush.
With flat brush, paint other birdhouse and pole Woodland Brown.
Mix small amount Geranium Red with the beige to make mauve. Paint roof and heart on brown birdhouse and tulips with #10 flat brush. While mauve is wet, highlight* tulips with Cloud White using #10 flat brush.
Paint roof of beige birdhouse and squiggle details on front with Light Waterfall Blue with #0 liner brush.
