I need more crochet help!!

OK, I finished my last project and I am starting another one, but, I need more help. When a patterns says to double crochet, and it does NOT specify if you are to go through both loops or just the back loop, what do you do. Do you go through both loops of the stitch underneath it, or do you go through the back loop. I know that going through the back loop will cause the pattern to have a texture, but, later in the pattern it specifies to go through both loops and then even later it specifies to go though the back loop, so what should I do. Go through both loops or just the back one.

That is what I will do. It is so hard when you don't quite understand the pattern. I have only done one other afghan by reading a pattern so I really am still learning. Anything else that i have done was because someone had showed me how. thanks again.
