need help making a cake...need an idea

Hi all! I am making a mermaid cake this week and I'm trying to figure out a substitution for the scales.

http://www.family.go.com/recipes/spe.../cake_mermaid/

is where it's located with a picture of it.

I'm wanting the replace the necco wafers with something else...I can't come up with anything cool. any thoughts?

Thanks!

MERMAID CAKE

• 1 baked 8-inch round cake
• 1 baked 13- x 9- x 2-inch cake
• 12 baked cupcakes
• 8 cups frosting (white, blue and yellow)
• Necco wafers (pink, green and purple)
• 2 green Necco wafers and 2 blue M&M's for eyes
• Shoestring licorice eyelashes
• Fruit by the Foot mouth
• Colored sugar

Step 1:
Cut and arrange the cakes as shown in the small photos.

Step 2:
Frost the mermaid's tail blue and cover it with Necco wafers. Frost the head and body white and the bikini top blue.

Step 3:
Add the candy eyes and mouth. Frost the cupcake curls yellow, then sprinkle on colored sugar for marine sheen.

What about gum drops? They have the sugar on them so that they will sparkle. Or you could use sugared almonds. They have a fish scale look about them.

i think that is a cute idea but all that sugar! geez!

ok do u have a cookie press? how about coloring the dough different colors and just pressing out small circles and flattening with the palm of your hand and sprinkle the cookines with sanding sugar(baking sugar, it doesnt melt in the oven) you could do these about the size of necco wafers. if u need to find the supplies to do this go to a cake decorating supply store they should have all of this there. hopw this helps i am a professional cake decorator so let me know if u need any help and i will try my best to help.

How about cutting the scales out of Fruit Roll-Ups?

I made a Little Mermaid year ago and I used a paper towel roll cut down to make the form for the tail and a doll pick for the body on a shell shaped cake. I covered the form with the Leaf tip to make the scales. If you use stiffer icing, it stands apart like scales.
