I like your post, sharinbo!!!
I usually rip the pages out of the mag I want and put them in a slip sleeve and put them in my binder. Everything else goes to the recycle bin

if you are just trying to get rid of them without throwing them away...you can check with your local library or schools...the library uses them for reference material and teachers use them as reference material and even for craft projects....just some ideas...

We usually give ur old mags to the local preschool/headstart. They are ALWAYS doing the "old-fashioned" cut and paste. So they are ALWAYS needing old mags to do this with. Also.. give them your old egg cartons. These come in REEALLY handy for paints that the kids use. Just a thought

Might I also suggest taking them to your local hospital. As a person who has been in the waiting room 53 times while my husband was in surgery for hours, Having some interesting magazines in the waiting rooms is really nice. The last thing I want to read in a waiting room is those stupid sporting magazines. Every few months I take my magazines over to the hospital and they really do appreciate them.
Just a suggestion, hope you find something useful to do with them.

here's what I did with mine, although I am a bit younger than some people, so it may seem stupid.
I took the brown paper sacks you get your grocery bags in, and unfold them carefully so you don't rip them.
Then I cut out different pictures in the magazines, and make a collage on the brown paper bags, and use them as wrapping paper. I did this for different people, and personalized it.
for teens you cut out bright things, and popular stars
for men you cut out sports things, like golf or whatever they like
for older women you cut out like quilts, or if you are doing it for a gag thing, like pictures of metamucil, depends, or whatever.
i do this if i don't have a lot of money to go buy wrapping paper, and it keeps me busy when I'm bored.

Definitely, I would share the magazines with a preschool or kindergarten teacher, either at a school or a church.
By the way, the egg cartons (styrofoam kind) are also great scissor holders. Just sit the carton on its lid and punch a pair of scissors into each egg shape. This is what I do for my Sunday School class (pre-K) and it's so easy... When we need scissors, one of them just brings the whole carton to the table.
Oh, yeah... 2muchprincess, that is a cool idea, too! My kids would love to do that!
