i made a couple of these last christmas. after someone had given my sister one the year before. they smell really great when you have the lights plugged in. you can even make them and give them for christmas gifts. they are so cute.

Can I assume that the lights don't get hot enough to cause a fire?
I guess I am just to careful.

I got something like this for christmas a couple of years ago. It had white lights in it. I keep it out all year and just either replace the potpourri, or put some oil in to to refresh it.
