I don't know if this will help, but I recently made a decorated binder that turned out really pretty. I used an empty 3-ring binder I had around the house, but you could use any size. I always see them at goodwill, etc. for really cheap. I covered the cover of the binder with a couple of layers of thin quilt batting, and then used some really pretty red silk like fabric with a Chinese theme to cover the quilt batting. It was like wrapping a present or covering a book. On the inside, I covered the binder with a plain black cloth, almost to the edgess with still a little of the red fabric showing. I'm sure you could finish it off with pretty ribbon or rickrack to cover where the cuts were made. I hope this makes sense. The point is that I was thinking this could be done rlatively cheaply, using binders from thrift stores, a fabric remnants. I imagine you could use any kind of glue that works with fabric. Then, the completed binder could be used for a recipe book, a budget binder, coupons, assignment notebooks, scrapbooks, diaries, etc., and the facric could be adjusted for the person - in a baby theme, little girls, country kitchen, etc. You wouldn't even have to fill up yourself, because the binder itself is really pretty. Or you could use a solid colored fabric and decorate with fabric paints, rhinestones, beads, etc. Hope this helps.

What a cool idea. You could also use the smaller binders or even decorate plain planners or address books.

That's what I was thinking - little girls would love this for a diary, or boys could use a small one to keep track of trading cards. You could use a small one and add calendar inserts for a book to keep track of birthdays, or a small one would be good for a college student, to keep track of insurance policy numbers, importand phone numbers. I just thought of this last week, and am thinking about making a few for gifts myself. The whole process was pretty easy.

Dont forget that you can also do the cookie in a jar, brownie in a jar, 5 bean soup in a jar... and just do a pretty card with instructions ... I havent tried these yet, but might make them this year... you can do a search 'cause I had seen that someone posted these recipes a couple of weeks ago...

Also, and this I REALLY want to make is you buy a cheap picture frame that you paint and decorate, and then you look the persons name meaning, do it in the computer really fancy looking and that is it... I just havent found a website that will give you the meaning of the name for free!!! sorry!! I have seen these sold for around $15 each!

just my 2 cents..

I posted this idea somewhere else but here goes again...

Take jars of any size, put an inch or so of sand in them, add candles, (You can add sea shells, glass beads, marbles, etc. around candle base) and then take wire, twist around top of jar to make a handle. Curling the wire will give it a country look. You can add charms or bend wire down and shape into a heart or apple. Anyway, trim the rim of the jar in lace or ribbon and you have a cute little gift for next to nothing and it's so easy! By varying the types and sizes of jars and candles, the possiblities are numerous! (example-quart jar with taper or small pillar, or try a jelly jar with a votive or tea light)

Also, try this one... Take a jelly jar, add some potpourri, fill with lamp oil. Puncture a hole through center of lid and poke the wick through it. Screw the lid down firmly to the jar with the rim so it doesn't leak. Trim rim of jar with lace or ribbon. I recived this as a gift one year. I would recommend scented oil if you can get it. Regular lamp oil isn't very pretty smelling in comparison.
