When I couldn't find them for my husband, his diabetic nurse said we could put them in sturdy plastic bottles, and mark them (white bleach bottles, black magic markers) and tape over the cap when filled. Soda and water bottles are too flimsy. You want something that the sharps won't puncture.

My problem was finding someone that would accept them for disposal in general. I think we took them to the local hospital, specifically to the kidney unit.
