My DS was like that in 1st grade. His teacher was AWFUL and inexperienced and just didnt know how to deal with the kids. It was her first yr of teaching on her own. I did have to get the principal involved and he really helped be the go between.

Nowdays, our school has everything online. I can check his grades, see the homework assigned each night and even leave comments for the teacher and vice versa. Its GREAT! I know exactly what homework needs to be done, if anything needs to be signed and what my DS's grades are as they happen. He has a learning disability and this has helped so much. And yes, if the kids fail to get something signed etc, they get a "mark". Too many marks in one week and the kids are not allowed to participate in Friday fun activities. But this is 5th grade were they are expected to be more responsible so I can see that.
