It depends on the workplace and if you have signed any agreements when you went to work there. If the policy was that no employee should be a smoker, and the employee took the job then started smoking, then they were in voilation of the contract with the employer. If how you look is how you got your job and you are told that your looks are part of the company image and you gain weight, then you can be fired. Google may have found that this employee was revealing company secrets or other information that was detrimental to their company. Of course that employee would be fired. As for the CEO, there was a morality clause in his contract and he voilated it.

In the state of SC there is a right to work law. You can be fired at any time for anything. And they don't have to give you a reason.
